Not ashamed to hope that we back into the playoffs

Nov 13, 2022, 8:00 AM

I know that a lot of people have written us off, but we are not out of the real playoff discussion, despite what ESPN thinks. We can back in, and I will not care how we get there if we do.

We have to pass 4 teams (Bama is irrelevant) and I believe that 3 are likely.

LSU - They will be out of it halfway through the 2nd quarter against UGA.
Michigan - OSU will take them to school and with their schedule, lack of making it to their conference championship is not enough to keep them ahead of us.
SoCal - I do not see them getting through UCLA, ND and a conference championship.

That leaves us needing to jump Tennessee or TCU. TCU would need a loss but they have not looked that good when I have watched them. Would the committee really put a team that didn't make their conference championship ahead of a 1 loss champion. As good as Tennessee looked in the other games, they looked pretty suspect against Georgia.

I might not like backing in, but if we do I'm All In.

So we sneak in at 4th, and get to play UGA? That sounds like fun!

I don't know if I have that much confidence now, but I probably will if we play them. I don't think that we have played a game that I thought we would lose since Tommy West.

one issue the committee will have with potentially

Nov 13, 2022, 8:02 AM

putting Tennessee in is the rematch with Georgia factor. Would they really want to put them in at 4 and set up a rematch with Georgia?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Trust me, if TN gets in, the committee will make any excuse

Nov 13, 2022, 8:07 AM

to put them at #3, to avoid a first round match with UGA!

The dream would be walking the dog on Georgia and following it up with a beat down of OSU. Stranger things have happened.

Re: Not ashamed to hope that we back into the playoffs

Nov 13, 2022, 8:19 AM

We would need to play drastically better still to gain the committees respect. Inconsistent QB play and giving up last second garbage time TDs will not do it.

Even if we win the next 3, it depends on HOW we win. Style points actually matter for us now

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Not ashamed to hope that we back into the playoffs

Nov 14, 2022, 5:42 AM

I agree with you on the style points. I have said on other posts that I think that we need to open up the offense and play with tempo to put up more points. I see it like having to go for it on 4th down in your own territory when you are behind and the clock is running out. If it works, fantastic, if it doesn't we are playing UNC to go to the Orange Bowl, anyhow.

Our 1981 team won our way into the championship. This team has to do the same thing. Keep winning and go bowling in a good bowl no matter what.

Re: Not ashamed to hope that we back into the playoffs

Nov 13, 2022, 8:21 AM

I am torn over whether it would he a good thing to make the playoffs this year. I suppose the worst that would happen is we lose in the first round but then it would also mean even more negative press. It almost feels like sitting at number 5 this year wouldn't be a bad thing. I suppose it depends in the end who else is in the playoffs

2024 orange level member flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

yeah honestly I am not sure if it's great for the program to

Nov 13, 2022, 8:27 AM

make it this year. We already have a somewhat negative perception around the nation right now and people would be pissed if we backed our way into the playoff again. Getting curb stomped by UGA or Ohio State in the national spotlight would be baaaad for program image.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: yeah honestly I am not sure if it's great for the program to

Nov 14, 2022, 5:53 AM

How bad did it hurt Ohio State's image when they backed in and we embarrassed them 31-0? At least, in my scenario we will be conference champs. There have been a lot of lopsided wins in the CFP semi-finals. If we make it then we will be playing with house money. We will be double digit underdogs and expected to lose. What would it do for our image if we actually won?

Re: Not ashamed to hope that we back into the playoffs

Nov 14, 2022, 6:15 AM [ in reply to Re: Not ashamed to hope that we back into the playoffs ]

Let me see if I can get you off the fence. What is the scarier scenario when it comes to negative press?

1) We make it to the CFP and get beat down by Georgia like the outside world thinks will happen.
2) We go to the Orange Bowl and get beat down by Alabama who is there in a consolation game.

We have nothing to lose in the terms of press, if we make it to the CFP.

Re: Not ashamed to hope that we back into the playoffs

Nov 13, 2022, 8:27 AM

I agree....

uga, tcu and osu go undefeated.

USC (the real one) will lose one of their last three games.

But.... this will not be popular on here. UT will get in ahead of us (a good possibility) if they don't lose another, which leads us to their game next week vs our little brother. I hate to say it, but our playoff chances might hinge on the coots beating UT next week. Which is scary to think about b/c they don't have a chance.... BUT, they might.

The most important thing is to win out though.... UNC will be a tough opponent in the ACCCG

2024 orange level membermilitary_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I'd rather be at bowl game in which we have a chance to win.

Nov 13, 2022, 8:37 AM

Playing UGA is just another loss. We need to be paired with a team which doesn't have a wall full of NFL caliper defensive linemen. I'm not throwing off on our O-line but DJ can't expect 5-6 seconds in a pocket to allow the receiver he's staring at get open.

Our defense is good but they do not score enough points to keep us in a game when the opponent can score 25 or 30 points.

Re: Not ashamed to hope that we back into the playoffs

Nov 13, 2022, 8:49 AM

I agree. Any chance to get in would be huge. The pr that comes from getting in is way bigger than what might happen if we do.

It ticks me to no end what lsu is getting after barely escaped arky with a backup qb. The narrative is a letdown was to be expected and nothing about lsu offense being putrid and failing like we get.

Also herbie a$$hole and fowler talking about tcu and how many top 25 teams they've beat. They really haven't when taking the final rankings. We have much better wins. A one loss tcu should definitely not get in over us. Neither should Tennessee. End of the day, t he only quality win will be over a weak Bama team.

I'd love to play Tennessee now. We'd win.

Re: Not ashamed to hope that we back into the playoffs

Nov 13, 2022, 9:03 AM

Correct me if I'm wrong, but an 11-1 team only made it one time I believe and that was 2016 Ohio St.

The BIG champ that year was Penn St. who had two losses.

Ohio St. was ranked #3 ahead of 12-1 Pac 12 champ Washington. Both made the playoffs, but that tells me if there was another one loss team they would have possibly left Washington out that year.

I think Clemson's resume will be good enough if we win out to get in over an 11-1 Tennessee or Michigan.

That is if UNC keeps winning. If we are both 11-1 for the ACC championship, that could be a play in game.

Alabama was an 11 - 1 non-conference champion in 2017 that made the CFP. They beat Clemson in the first round and won the Natty.

Nov 13, 2022, 9:18 AM

Let the chips fall as they may.

I can't blame some folks for their perspective after the ND game and prior CFP performances. Honestly, I can't say myself that I feel as confident as in the past about our team's chance of winning a CFP game, much less running the table.

Still, this team has a chance against any of team they line up against. The question this season has always been....can the offense show up when the defense is having a rough day?

They did against WF and that gave me confidence that our offensive woes were starting to get behind us....and so far that has been the peak of our offensive performance. At 10 games now, it's as Dabo says -- We got who we got, and we are who we are, which is a good enough team that has been inconsistent all year but as we all saw against ND, if we ain't up to snuff, we are prone to a whoopin like anyone else.

That said, I'd love to close out the year strong where DJ, Streeter, and Co just play lights out to inspire us with more confidence against whomever we are matched up against come the postseason -- we have the defense that can get us to the natty, but gotta have the offense to compliment it instead of hoping the defense can play perfect all game.

UCLA and Oregon lost

Nov 13, 2022, 9:28 AM

So that helps. USC probably loses at some point this season. We need TCU and Tennessee to lose.

I don’t see Tennessee losing to Vanderbilt or SC though. So the climb into the playoffs is essentially over :(

Re: Not ashamed to hope that we back into the playoffs

Nov 13, 2022, 9:34 AM

Heck yeah sign me up for the playoffs anytime. This team can still be a really good FB team. All of the other playoff contenders are playing their best FB. Clemson hasn't came close to putting it all together yet. They might get beat bad but I would like the chance. You never know when the ball is going to bounce your way. A tipped pass that gets picked, a scoop and score, a kicker misses a few kicks etc.

First things first. Beat Miami.

Nothing is a given.

If we manage to win out and somehow make it to PHX(probably) or ATL, I’ll be there hoping for some magic. You never know. Missouri had UGA on the ropes.

Being afraid to lose is not a good place to be. Never shy away from a challenge and the CFP is a challenge. What the hayll, 3 out 4 CFP teams are going to lose anyway. Hopefully it works out for the Tigers to make it.

And raise your hand if you want to drive several hours to watch more sideways passes? Serious narrow pipe dream about getting in playoffs. Play Georgia in Atlanta? Not a good idea. Have you seen Georgia play? Just stop trying to will this team to get better and get to the playoffs. They are what they are — an ACC team that is going to win 11 games.

We'd get our doors blown off. That's not something I have a burning desire to watch.

We aren't playoff winning material, period. There's a reason Clemson made it to six playoffs in a row and played for 4 national titles in a row. We were consistent on both offense and defense. Anyone who thinks Clemson can be competitive in the CFP with this team isn't being objective.
