Question about cutting a trench in the lawn.

May 19, 2022, 1:55 PM

Before I bought my house last fall the previous owners replaced the septic system, which ripped up the backyard something fierce (TWSS). There are two drain pipes* that (I'm told) used to drain into the yard without turning it into a swamp, but now.... swamp. So I started digging a trench in the lawn, which has been a real mofo due to countless rocks and heavy mud.

So now I have this kinda meandering narrow creek in the back yard and it's actually working to contain the water. Since it's always going to have a certain amount of water in it, I decided to turn it into a feature: I'm going to add river stones to the bottom and have larger rocks and plants along the edges. There are already frogs or toads hanging out around it.

Here's my question: Do I need a pond liner for this to work? Could I just pour the stones in and count on them not sinking into the muck?

*One of the drains is from my gutters and the other is from the water softener which pumps out overflow once or twice a day.

I would line prior to putting any sort of river stones

Larger rock, like class B or larger, would probably be fine without a liner, but if it is a decorative rock that you dont want to continue replacing, I would line it.
