Brigadier General Alfred ####### (CSA 1829-1910)

Mar 8, 2021, 10:56 PM

Alfred ####### came from a very well-to-do family from Georgia. Members included a successful cotton magnate, a governor of the Utah Territory, as well as family who held prominent positions during the Revolution and the War of 1812. Alfred would resign his U.S. Army commission at the onset of the war and become Major of the 1st Georgia Infantry due to his military experience. He would quickly be given another assignment as Colonel of Lafayette McClaws’ old regiment, the 10th Georgia. He would serve quite well in the Peninsula Campaign. ####### was wounded attacking the Union lines at Malvern Hill when Robert E. Lee was pushing the Union away from Richmond. Before the Confederate Campaign into Maryland, General Cadmus Wilcox would take ill, and ####### would get his first taste of brigade command. His brigade played a key role at South Mountain and Crampton’s Gap and saved another Confederate regiment from being completely overrun. A few days later at Antietam, ####### was wounded on the way to fighting at the Bloody Lane. That would be the last fighting ####### would see in the Eastern Theater. After his promotion to Brigadier, ####### was looking to command an all Georgia brigade. The only opening was out West and Alfred #######’s request was granted.
