I think Stoudt played a LOT better then people realize ....

Oct 12, 2014, 10:58 AM

Granted, some (lot) stupid stuff ... throwing the ball UNTO coverage, bad "situational awareness" (end of first half) .....

BUT, after the lad settled down, he WAS moving the ball in the second half, against one of the BEST pass defenses in the Land ... also, some of his perfectly thrown passes were dropped in the best of ankle-biters tradition ...

Given that, we snapped VICTORY from the jaws of defeat ... Cole will play from now on, up to his potential

My only criticism, he must learn to motivate his running, with reckless abandon, ie throw his skinny white #### into the mix. The guys is 6-4, 230 lbs, but he runs timidly. Lower your shoulder and go for it !

Do this, and be glad.

He got thrown suddenly into a game against a great defense after he didnt practice all week. Ill cut him a break on the bad throws this week.

Next week however, we need him to be game on. He is a good enough QB to move the ball on BC, and our Def is good enough to slow down their rushing game. Now lets go do it.

Just remember, that shoulder was already injured...

...if Cole runs and bangs that shoulder, he's out of the game. That's why I was surprised to see him on that 4th down play with the ball....unless someone missed an assignment.

He hurt his shoulder last week and and was in a lot of pain.

If he didn't take that early slide on 3rd down we may have had to put the 3rd string QB out there.

he was bad

Oct 12, 2014, 4:43 PM

He was really bad, sorry, no two ways about it. I posted about this yesterday, and it got zapped, but he got an 11.5 QBR on ESPN's scale. This takes him down to #110 on ESPN's adjusted quarterback rating system...meaning, there's only a handful of FBS QB's that are worse. (Watson, in comparison, is still #2...behind only Marcus Mariota.) By the end, the only throw Stoudt could make was the bubble screen.

It does Clemson no favors to deny the obvious. BC, Syracuse, and Wake are not strong teams - though BC in Boston is a bit worrisome - but we'll need more than nine points on offense to win it, even with our defense.

Essentially, we have to figure out how to score probably 21-28 points against BC and Syracuse to walk away with W's, since it's highly unlikely either squad will score more than 20 on our defense unless they're gifted some turnovers.

The good news is, Nick Schuessler was a former three-star who was (briefly) in Dan Mullen's system at Ole Miss, and David Olson was a former 4-star who got some games at Stanford, so if worst comes to worst and Stoudt continues to play ineffectively, we do have a couple of viable options. With our defense, and our upcoming schedule, we don't need a QB to be a killer, just moderately functional and capable of embracing the moment and leading the team while he's out there, and I suspect one of them can do that.

We survived Louisville because of our D, because Dabo took personal command of special teams and has visibly turned it around - hey, we got pressure on some punts, returned one for a TD, and for once, Humphries did not have three guys standing around him in a circle when the ball arrived, because we had controlled the punt-team's gunners. And Lakip seems to be really responding to Dabo...where he's really had trouble is with kicks on the far hash, but he knocked those down yesterday. (Yes, he got a favorable doink off the crossbar on one...he was still close enough, and the Football Gods smiled on him. I would say he was due some luck.)

And oh, yeah - the Death Valley crowd. Who screamed and blasted the Louisville offense into five - repeat (5)! - false-start penalties, and I lost track of how many time-outs burned. Petrino had to spike the ball on third down because he had no time-outs left, and he had no time-outs left because he had to burn them thanks to the DV crowd. I do not think Petrino will be comparing the Carrier Dome to Death Valley again. ;)

Mentally it has to be huge just to know from the start of the week he is the starter, also for the rb's, they know they gotta step up more cause cole is less of a runner. I expect him to be sharper and better prepared.
