Brad Brownell: Only Larry freaking Shyatt has a WORSE overall winning percentage among Clemson basketball coaches since 1975. Let that sink in. It's Larry Shyatt & then Brad Brownell.

I saw Black Flag and Seven Seconds in 85' at the old Tinderbox in Memphis , TN.
Was the coolest show I have ever attended.
As far as stadium/large venue acts I must admit that INXS/w opening act Ziggy Marley in 1988 was a tremendous show , although it was at the old Carolina Coliseum .

Re: What is the best concert you have ever been to?

Apr 26, 2015, 12:46 AM

... perhaps last, but certainly not least. If you like Blues, I saw a concert in Chastain Park outside Atlanta in the Summer of '92 that featured The Fabulous Thunderbirds, Delbert McClinton, BB King and Buddy Guy (and one other awesome group I can't even remember at the moment....) It was a veritable clinic of hard core, old school R&B (heavy on the "B".) It is, of course, my opinion, and perhaps my personal taste, but I'll say without exception there has never been the equal of Buddy Guy on guitar. Unless it might have been Carlos Santana, or Chuck Berry, each of whom I saw perform in LJC at Clemson in the early '70's. (Do you guys have any idea how much re-fer is coated on those Corten Steel girders o'head in LJC? It's probably why they're having to renovate the place.) Then there was Al Green in Cupertino, CA back in 2000, but he's a sentimental favorite. Awesome performance. And there was Tom Petty in the Blockbuster Pavilion in Charlotte back in the early '90's.... and a few others. Ah, where does the time go... but music is the timeless, cross-generational equalizer. (Thanks to the transistor radio and electronics ever since...!)

I'm definitely one of those geezers. I mean, I've seen no reference in these posts to Janis Joplin, Grace Slick, or even Led Zeppelin. However, there was mention of Woodstock (which I missed going to "by that much." And it was about one hour away from home at the time.) Just the same, it was vinyl records, "Hi-Fi" and transistor radios that might not have actually made rock-and-roll (or Pop, or Country), but certainly made it possible to be what it has become today. It's all good!

Wow, and I just finished posting a reply claiming to be a geezer, myself. That's awesome! However, I didn't mention that one of the favorite concerts I've ever attended was Benny Goodman with the Spartanburg Symphony Orchestra in Twichell Auditorium, Converse College, back in the late '70's. There was the obligatory Swing medley, but the feature was a "classical" Clarinet Concerto he had actually recently composed. The whole thing was breathtaking. Later, there was Leontyne Price performing arias in the same venue ("Un Bel Di" - heart breaking and mind boggling perfection), and Ella Fitzgerald with Count Basie at The Cistern, College of Charelston, during the Spoleto Festival '78. Unbelievable. These are "concerts" outside the typical definition of such, but still legendary performances by legendary artists. Thanks all for sharing!

Apr 26, 2015, 9:21 AM

The sheer anarchy of being in the mosh pit of a Ramones show immediately comes to mind. Guns'n'Roses on one of their "on" nights. Being mesmerized by an early 80's Eddie Van Halen or Stevie Ray Vaughan. Georgia Satellites or Jason & The Scorchers in an intimate too-dark dive bar. A KISS original lineup mega-show. Mother's Finest in their heyday in the Clemson Armory. Drivin'n'Cryin upstairs Study Hall in downtown Clemson. Pat Travers or Jimmy Buffett in Tillman Hall.

I've been lucky to see a ton of them in my day, many of them special in their own unique way.

I'd advise you to go see shows in smaller venues - you get so much more enjoyment out of that than you do in an arena show. The big shows are impressive from the sheer size and volume, but nothing beats a great bar band show. Sadly, those are harder and harder to find these days. Once upon a time, you could go see live bands play all over the place in Clemson. Not any more.
