The Spring Game

Apr 13, 2022, 9:44 PM

I know all about the offense and defense first teams being split. I know all about the offensive line not only being split, but numerous injuries as well. Even with taking all of that into account, the way our quarterback and offense looked is of great concern, yet not surprising.

1. Not one ounce of improvement regarding the starting QB.
2. Not any improvement regarding offensive line push on rushing plays.

This month marks at least one year that our coaching staff has been aware that we have an offense with serious limitations. And at least one year of knowing that our current starting quarterback is unable to move the team. I say at least one year, because I'm sure the staff knew this was an issue early on in spring practice of last year. When September rolls around, it will mark at least a year and a half. What has been done to rectify this situation and assure that a playoff level defense is not wasted two years instead of one? What has been done in a year and a half?

1. We have recruited a great QB out of Texas so that helps.
2. We had a chance to look for and hire an experienced, accomplished, and noted offensive coordinator and instead we promoted the quarterback coach on the staff. The qb's position coach.
3. We had the opportunity to look for and hire an offensive line coach of note and accomplishment, yet we promoted from the staff a former player that has never been a position coach before.

therefore, it is no surprise that the offense on display last Saturday, looked just like the offense on display in the Cheez-it Bowl, which looked just like the offense on display throughout the 2021 season.

I expected, regarding the starting qb, to at least see improvement to the point that he looked like a D1, starting, ACC quarterback. I did not see that. He has lost weight, which in my opinion, should have been addressed by the coaches at the beginning of the 2021 season. However, lost weight did not make any difference in the performance on the field last Saturday. Inaccurate throws, lack of mobility and poor decision making, all very familiar.

The defense should be fantastic if we can avoid major injuries. But it will be another wasted national championship caliber defense, if there is not improvement in this offense. The irony is that imaginative, quick offensive plays, with great qb play, started this run all the way back with Boyd and his teammates. Now, we have an absolutely elite defense, that simply needs an average offense in order to win games. Last years offense wasn't average, it wasn't even simply bad, it was historically bad. As of April 9, 2022, that has not changed. If we could just get average play on offense, I'm not sure anyone could score enough to beat us. But if we are going to continue to sputter and keystone cop our way to 7 points at halftime and 13 by the end of the third quarter, we will lose 4 to 6. We lost three last year, but were very fortunate that it wasn't a six loss season. That kind of luck doesn't hang around an extra year.

The best part of last Saturday was hearing Neff's interview at halftime when he said that, with the new video board and design, we are also going to see improved national championship signage that is worthy of honoring those teams. That was great to hear. Let's hope that is the case.

I know longer blame the inept offense on players that simply can't, or won't play well enough to improve. In September, we will be at 18 months and counting with a bad offense. Issues that fester for that length of time are completely on the staff.

you make some good points and I may agree that a better outside hire of an experienced O-Coordinator could have been considered but Dabo likes Streeter and is letting him grow into it which may hurt awhile.

offense for decades prior to 2021. I love Dabo. There is no better head coach. But it doesn't mean he is right every time.

well the Napier move was done on the fly wasnt it? And over time he has grown int a good coach. Dabo probably threw him in to early and the talent then wasnt what it is now.

Thomas Austin was the OL coach at Furman and took a demotion to come to us and wait a year.

I am not sure when you woke up from a long nap but the team we had last year was not the team we had in 2016 or 2018 and we will likely never have those teams again. The coaches and team we put on the field last fall was amazing because that patched up, rag tag unit won 10 games including the Bowl you are yelling about. Why would you think a non game, Spring game would show you anything? If you are not a true fan and can't give our future Hall of Fame coach credit for knowing what he is doing, take a hike. Be patient.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

If we had a good qb last year, that team would have beaten

Apr 13, 2022, 10:48 PM

Georgia in the opener and had as good a shot at winning the natty as Georgia or Alabama. The defense was there, the offense could have been there with simply an average performance.

A patched up, rag tag unit that was preseason #2 in the nation? We had a lot of injuries and I respect their grit in finishing 10-3, but again, that was a natty defense and, with just an average offense, nobody outscores us unless in the championship game vs Georgia or Bama.

Dabo is the greatest person that has ever happened to Clemson. He is absolutely a hall of fame coach and the greatest I have ever seen. It doesn't mean the points about the current offensive slump aren't true. And because I am dissatisfied with an offense that ranked in the 110 range doesn't mean I am not a fan.

We would have beaten Georgia with average QB play last year. It was painful to watch last year; couldn’t throw, catch or block. Championship D with only a run game. We won’t be able to win our side of the ACC without a passing game. We need to play the best QB, regardless of tenure.

Didn't compare to 2016 or 2018? Rag Tag? Last year was a

team that was preseason #2 in the nation and for good reason.
* A five star QB that had some playing experience and success the previous year.
* five star receivers
* A veteran offensive line
* A playoff caliber defense that played like one
* The recruiting had been better for this team than either 2016 or 2018.

As my original post points out, the offense let us down. Had they just been average, instead of really bad, we make the playoffs and either win it all, or lose to Georgia in a rematch, or Bama. And again, we have a team, that if it gets good or average qb and offensive play, we could make playoff and perhaps win it all. If the offense continues like this, it will waste another natty defense. WE are certainly not at a point where we say, our players can not be compared to 2016 and 2018. That is just not true. We have an offense that is holding us back and needs to be fixed.

Couple of other notes from the Spring Game fogot to mention.

Apr 13, 2022, 10:41 PM

1. Uniforms and helmets are still the best in the game.

2. Should wear purple jersey and white pants on occasion. Looks much better than all purple.

I'd be happy for us to wear purple again. This fade regalia junk is weak. It was always Northwestern purple which is about the color of the diploma covers. That was the school color and still should be

Why wait until September? Leave now! There are plenty of never lose National Championship teams with big name head coaches at every position just waiting for you to show up!
I swear people like you are just miserable!!
