He called me a Jew

May 14, 2022, 11:01 AM

I was getting a landscaping quote and I told the guy I didn’t want to spend the 10k he wanted and more like 6k. So then he said he was “dealing w a Jew” .

I was extremely offended and will not use him. He also was camo cabelas hat and bass pro shirt. I don’t think I am overreacting. I told him I would do the other work myself. Racist POS

Would this be offensive to you?

Call me cheap, tell me I need more done. He was mad bc I told him I could do all that other stuff myself like edging and I’d burn the brush and leaves. Tell me I’m a Jew. What a racist POS he was.

To me it’s just being smart, I’d rather do the work then pay his people 4K extra to do dumb ####:

I dunno ... the "Jew" peoples are (stereotypes zukk, but here goes ...) a high-achiever group.

I'd have probably told the guy 'thank you very much, but I'm no where nearly as accomplished as most Jews. Now GT-FO, you FuthaMucker.

On the other hand, if your landscaper candidate had called me a US Congressman, then he and I woulda come together.

Now that's funny right there, I don't care who you are!

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Not only was he saying something that's construed as...

May 14, 2022, 2:13 PM

racist he's also ignorant. You weren't trying to 'Jew him down,' you were trying to negotiate some of the total labor out of the quote so you could save money. His ignorance was twofold. He was mistakenly thinking that you were stupid enough to make a lopsided deal where he does much less that was reflected in the price he offered. You hurt his feelings when you expose his deception.

I suspect, and this is my singular opinion not something I've read or heard preached from the pulpit so no one take this as fact or truth but weight it for yourself and decide if it is valid. Perhaps this is where the term 'Jew him down,' came from.

"20 And the LORD said, Because the cry of Sodom and Gomorrah is great, and because their sin is very grievous;

21 I will go down now, and see whether they have done altogether according to the cry of it, which is come unto me; and if not, I will know.

22 And the men turned their faces from thence, and went toward Sodom: but Abraham stood yet before the LORD.

23 And Abraham drew near, and said, Wilt thou also destroy the righteous with the wicked?

24 Peradventure there be fifty righteous within the city: wilt thou also destroy and not spare the place for the fifty righteous that are therein?

25 That be far from thee to do after this manner, to slay the righteous with the wicked: and that the righteous should be as the wicked, that be far from thee: Shall not the Judge of all the earth do right?

26 And the LORD said, If I find in Sodom fifty righteous within the city, then I will spare all the place for their sakes.

27 And Abraham answered and said, Behold now, I have taken upon me to speak unto the Lord, which am but dust and ashes:

28 Peradventure there shall lack five of the fifty righteous: wilt thou destroy all the city for lack of five? And he said, If I find there forty and five, I will not destroy it.

29 And he spake unto him yet again, and said, Peradventure there shall be forty found there. And he said, I will not do it for forty's sake.

30 And he said unto him, Oh let not the Lord be angry, and I will speak: Peradventure there shall thirty be found there. And he said, I will not do it, if I find thirty there.

31 And he said, Behold now, I have taken upon me to speak unto the Lord: Peradventure there shall be twenty found there. And he said, I will not destroy it for twenty's sake.

32 And he said, Oh let not the Lord be angry, and I will speak yet but this once: Peradventure ten shall be found there. And he said, I will not destroy it for ten's sake.

33 And the LORD went his way, as soon as he had left communing with Abraham: and Abraham returned unto his place."

I'm not excusing or accusing it's just that the guy was so wrong to accuse you of trying to 'Jew him down,' if this scripture is where the term originated. You didn't ask him to work for less.

To justify any who say 'WRONG BORED, MAROON!' I will add...

It delights my heart that Jesus didn't try to 'Jew God down,' but faced the torment of the cross for heathen like us and Jews alike. What mercy, what grace, what love, what a love!

BTW, I dearly love the Children of Israel, one of the virgins of the Tribe of Judah birthed my Savior. If any of those who call themselves Jewish take offense at my comment I apologize for saying 'Jew him down,' but not for calling Jesus, The Lord.

Re: Not only was he saying something that's construed as...

May 14, 2022, 2:57 PM [ in reply to Not only was he saying something that's construed as... ]

It's an interesting cultural phenomenon, Jews aside.

Here, to blantantly overcharge is considered a slight to the buyer's intelligence, but in Israel, Turkey, Egypt, and other Middle Eastern countries, as well as some Asian places, haggling is considered respectful and to cut quickly to a cost is considered rude.

There is something in the interaction of the negotiators that is in itself considered respectful to both parties, sort of like an extended verbal handshake. Or, that you care enough about me to talk to me rather than just walk away with my goods.

In fact there's an Arab proverb that says something to the effect of "Don't trust a seller till you've haggled with him enough to know the smell of his breath." That's pretty foreign to us.

When I was a much younger man, with a lot less tact, I had a great conversation with an Israeli on cultural issues, and I just blurted out "So what is this stereotype about Jews being tight with money?" Lol. He was a super cool guy and many years my senior, so he rolled with it with ease.

He said "Well, for 2000 years Jews couldn't own land and didn't even have a country. So if you can't feed your family with your own hands by farming or herding, and anything you have can be taken away from you overnight, including your home, then portable, liquid wealth is the only thing you have that gives you any security at all. So money becomes kind of important if you want to survive. That, and I guess we're just cheap. Hahaha."

Price negotiating and stinginess aren't unique to any one group, but there are some cultural differences and history that lead to those stereotypes.

I've "offended" more than one person in my profession by challenging their price and asking for a further breakdown of their numbers, etc., so it's funny that NOT challenging a price in the Middle East and Asia is considered offensive. Different strokes and all.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

It is cultural.

May 15, 2022, 8:34 AM

Much of the middle east tradition and culture is founded in the Torah. I suspect sarcasm came from the Bible too. I was reading about the talks between God, Moses and the people in Exodus and it 'stuck me,' that God often presented questions rather than statements. I will paraphrase this so be warned.

God "You've walked in the desert for forty years, a flame has led you by night and a cloud by day, bread fell from the sky in the morning and foul from the air in the evening, your clothes have not worn and even your shoes remain unworn; now you're coming at me with doubt that I can deliver the land I promised to you for fear of those who occupy that land, AM I NOT YOUR GOD?"

So what fear have we now? Fear of rejection? Fear of a sin which we feel can't be forgiven? Fear of loss of property, wealth or loss of life itself? Perhaps it's the fear of having a sin in our life which we do not believe we can give up or one that we refuse to give up. When you tire of walking in the desert and realize that all that time God was leading you back to His good grace can you not hear His voice asking, 'Am I not your God?'

Re: Not only was he saying something that's construed as...

May 14, 2022, 9:33 PM [ in reply to Not only was he saying something that's construed as... ]

Of course the "Jew me down" comment was crude, but I expect that it was an aggressive (& tactless) form of negotiation.

Our TNet brother chose to say guh'bye, a response which the landscaper should have expected was possible (likely?) given that he had probably tried the aggressive negotiating tactic (with bad results) in the past to other prospective customers.

But I disagree with your view that the OP wasn't trying to get the landscaper to work for less money. The OP responded to the landscaper's quote of $10K by suggesting that he'd pay $6K for the LS service.

Off topic (yet not entirely off topic), the examples of negotiations between towering figures of the OT with God are fascinating. Neither me nor anyone I've ever known would ... if God spoke directly to us ... dare to negotiate with Him.

That is, unless God also spoke to us and instructed us to 'make our case' to Him.

(?) Since I perceive you as a true Biblical scholar (please, don't be embarrassed or mad at me for suggesting that), how do you view the 'nerve' of Abraham and David and other when they negotiated with God?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Not only was he saying something that's construed as...

May 15, 2022, 8:57 AM

The OP asked for a what is called a schedule of value in construction and some other business. It may be called something else but it's always a breakdown of the various activities, services or products proposed. Each service, product or activity is assigned a value in dollars so that the customer can know what he is paying for each. For the worker, contractor or service provider it provides a notice to the customer which give him some insight on what money is due the contractor upon completion or delivery of the service, work or product. It is good for both buyer and seller.

Two types of people won't like a schedule of value. A seller/contractor who is ignorant or crooked and a customer/owner who is ignorant or crooked. Try as I may I always suspect someone not wanting to give a schedule of value a crook but I try to address them as if they don't understand the value of a schedule of value. I 'mansplain,' in great detail how it protects both them and me.

Much to cover in your last question.

The last question deserves its own thread. I will quote your question on the Religion board and begin to peel that onion offering my opinion there.
