Best CFB Programs

Apr 16, 2019, 11:32 AM

Braden Gall posted this list on Twitter with some weak ex post facto justification for his criteria but I thought it might facilitate some discussion:

https://twitter.com/BradenGall/status/1117815671872790529

I don't really have a problem with Texas being ahead of Clemson even if they're a bit high but UGA shouldn't even be in the top 10.

For reference, his list. I've added the number of generally-accepted National Titles since 1970 next to each team, really drives home UGA being an outlier.

1. Bama (1973, 1978, 1979, 1992, 2009, 2011, 2012, 2015, 2017)

2. Texas (1970, 2005)

3. Georgia (1980)

4. Ohio St (1970, 2002, 2014)

5. Florida (1996, 2006, 2008)

6. Clemson (1981, 2016, 2018)

7. LSU (2003, 2007)

8. Oklahoma (1974, 1975, 1985, 2000)

9. USC (1972, 1974, 1978, 2003*, 2004)

10. Penn St (1982, 1986)

11. Florida St (1993, 1999, 2013)

12. Tennessee (1998)

13. Auburn (2010)

14. TAMU (none, last 1939)

15. Michigan (1997)

16. Notre Dame (1973, 1977, 1988)

17. Nebraska (1970, 1971, 1994, 1995, 1997)

18. Miami (1983, 1987, 1989, 1991, 2001)

19. Washington (1991)

20. Oregon (none all time, have played for 2 recently)

Just to drive home the point about UGA, 20 different teams have won Championships since they have and most have won multiple.

Nebraska and Miami are way too low.

Also, note how many teams claim the 1970 National Title!

I’m curious to know what his criteria might be.

the thread--he does some real mental gymnastics trying to justify Texas and UGA being that high and argues it's because of access to talent base and school resources.

To me that proves the opposite: if they have all the talent in the world around them and the resources, they must be really bad to be squandering all of that.

I’m not sure how Florida is that high. They seem to stick out like a sore thumb in that list.

Is this his real name?

outside of the current run we've only had 1 bout of success (1981).

Yet ranks UGA at 3 above us LOL.

Having UGa and Texas in the top, but the U and Nebraska at 17 and 18?

Apr 16, 2019, 11:43 AM

Huh? With no due respect, anyone born after 1980- that’s me- ranks Texas over Miami if we look at in the field results.

And Nebraska is just waiting to be a power again. Screenshot this post. Frost will make Nebraska relevant again. They have the passion and resources, and they play in the weaker division in the Big 10. No PSU, MSU, Michigan, or OSU.

For that matter OU and USC are better than UGa/Texas.

That explains why that dumpster fire made the list at all.
