Haven’t seen this before but high school football, kids playing both ways.

Linebacker and qb. He was playing out of control, nasty hits. Got two unsportsmanlike penalties. Kicked out on D and now they didn’t have a qb. Never thought about it that way but it’s like two people got kicked out of the game.

Had a quarterback who played safety too.
Our running back was our linebacker.

The stamina was unappreciated back then.

your best athletes playing both ways was not only not rare, it was pretty much expected.

Of course, we only had one room school houses, and horse and buggy traffic. (I kid, but only by about five generations.)

I attended a small high school and probably had at least 6 or 7 guys who went both ways. Our wishbone QB did not go both ways but was also our kicker and punter. I played TE and stand up DE (like a hybrid LB). Very common in my era for guys to play two positions. 72-74 were my varsity years. On my freshman team in 71 I was a FB and safety. Our team was 0-6, JV was 0-6, varsity was 0-10. We got all new coaches after that season and went to the wishbone. 3-7, then 6-3-1, my senior year we went 8-1-1. Nice turn around with the same kids. FYI, they went 10-0 the next year.

Kind of reminds me of Clemson QB/LB Patrick Sapp.

College football players played both ways into the early 60's.

Very common in South Carolina in the 60's and 70's. We won the 3A state championship with 10 of the starters playing both ways. Beat teams in the playoffs that utilized a two platoon system. It was put the best eleven on the field and play until the game was over or you got hurt.

Even 3-A teams in the late 80s had two way players. I myself played te/de
