About Devin Coleman

numbers dictated someone had to trasnfer, and we have another player who will at the end of the year, as we have 2 incoming recruits. Devin worked hardto get back fro his injury, whoch was a severe one. It is my belief it has greatly hampered his abilityto guard better athletes, and this is why we saw so little of him against the better opponents we have played. Devin has the ability to score, but right now, simply can't guard well enough to play regularly. At the ACC level if you can't guard, you don't play. Next year he'd be competing against Roper, Rooks and DeVoe. He is by all accounts a good kid in good standing, and I am sure th staff will do all in their power to see he lands on his feet. Best of luck Devin!

putting up some gaudy numbers this year. That said, he was a 2 star whose second best offer was from Elon when he committed to us. Maybe Brownell was just the first major college coach to find him, maybe the kid is a late bloomer. I hope one or both is the case if we we are running off a talent like Coleman to make room for him.
Roper and Rooks are great kids who can shoot lights out. But they are both undersized and have yet to prove they have the physicality to play against Syracuse, Pitt, Louisville, etc.
Brownell should have done everything he could to keep Coleman and should not focus on keeping Filer. Frankly, I don't think he is all that comfortable around big city ballers like Coleman and Filer and would rather try to field the team from Hoosiers...

Rivals has Devoe as a 3* player

I usually trust Rivals the most in terms of basketball scouting because they seem to dedicate the most resources to basketball. Also, he now has an offer from Butler, who, last time I checked, was still a pretty decent basketball program.

from us. Pretty common occurrence. Bottom line is this: you cannot hope to be competitive in the New ACC recruiting primarily two stars and three stars (even those with offers from Butler).

DeVoe picked up all three stars from Rivals (and all three from Scout) after he committed to us in August. He was not on their radar at the time, but was a two-star according to ESPN and 24/7 (which led to my mistaken recollection).

We primarily recruit 3* players, not 2* players

We seem to be in on a few more 4* prospects like Grantham. We are also in the running for Jawun Evans in 2015, who is a 4* PG prospect we have been in on from day 1. I wouldn't be shocked to see him sign with Clemson.

Agreed. Coach B is ratcheting up the recruitment in steps.

Few remember he had only 9 scholarship players his first year. Nuke had to join in just to put a full 5 on 5 practice session together so he had to go hard simply getting numbers in early. His first class has given us Hall and KJ, and Devin until today. There's a thick squad behind them and an even higher notch on the horizon. Overall we're already at a higher talent level than OP was producing outside of the Jennings haul, and we know how that pick worked out.

Purnell recruited at a much higher level than Brownell
Dec 28, 2013, 4:25 PM

according to every recruiting service. Now, some of those were busts - none bigger than Noel Johnson. Baby Book and Milt did not meet expectations but they were not busts like Johnson (or Bernard Sullivan for that matter).
Whether or not Purnell out recruited Brownell is not really for the recruiting services to decide. The proof is in the pudding. In year three, Purnell won 19 games and Brownell won 13. In year four, Purnell won 25 games and Brownell will win __?
When push comes to shove, it's not about the number of stars and it's certainly not about scoring defense statistics. It is all about the Ws. And push will soon be coming to shove for Brownell.

were fun times as a basketball fan. Unfortunately for Purnell, his style couldn't deliver over the long haul, or in the NCAA tourney.
I didn't realize the recruiting numbers went the other way.

Cliff Hammonds 2 star Tanner Smith 2 star Raymond Sykes 2 star Trevor Booker 3 star Demontez Stitt 3 star James Mays 3 star Andre Young 3 star Devin Booker 4 star Noel Johnson 4 star Milton Jennings 5 star
Pretty much the same level, OP missed on his most celebrated recruits

According to Rivals, Cliff Hammonds, Tanner Smith and Raymond Sykes were all 3 stars. The only 2 stars signed by Purcell were a couple from his first class who quickly transferred out and Bryan Narcisse.
Also, there is a big difference between a high 3 (high enough to make the Rivals 150) and a low 3 (there are more 3s out there than 4s and 5s). James Mays and Andre Young were high 3s / Rivals 150s as were a few Purnell signees you left out: Vernon Hamilton, KC Rivers, David Potter and Catalin Baciu.
Brownell has signed only three players who were high 3s or higher (thus making the Rivals 150): Sullivan, Blossomgame, and now Grantham. Sullivan is gone and Grantham has not arrived.

injury his senior year of high school hurt his rankings. Filer was a high 3. Vernover was a holdover from Shyatt who had originally recruited him. Bobo was a 4 star. OP's highest rated recruits rarely worked out(Bobo, Johnson, and I say Milt. Lil' Book had a good senior year.) And I'd say Brownell has done a pretty decent job identifying some talent with KJ and Hall, wouldn't you? Throw Roper in there as well. DeVoe will be the same. His stock is really rising in recruiting circles. I would hope you agree Brownell deserves at least through next year when his first real recruiting class(Hall and KJ now) will be seniors and he'll have as of right now at least 5 other upperclassmen. One of the 4 sophomores is probably gone at some point due to PT, maybe Harrison

So, We signed 2 players to scholarships for next year,

knowing that there would be no room for them unless 2 current players dropped out or transferred.
My question is, did Brownell sign these guys:
1. After determining that 2 yet to be determined current scholarship players would have their schollies yanked?
Or
2. After talking to specific players and determining that they would have their schollies yanked at the end of the season?
or
3. After talking to 2 players who indicated to BB that they would be transferring of their own accord?
If 1 or 2, I'm curious as to the reasoning that was involved.
