We went out there for a practice round this week, and 14 is going to be impossible. 240 yard par 3 with a 20 MPH head wind an elevated green. I don’t think you can even see the flag from the collection areas around the green. There’s also a 605 yard par 5; if this wind holds up it’s gonna be fun to watch.

did you see any ball movement on the greens from the wind while the players were reading their putts or when they were addressing their putts? When I said I wanted to see the course play tough,I didn't mean I wanted it end up like in 2018 at the US Open in Southampton,N.Y. where the balls were rolling off greens before the players even putted or while they were addressing their putts but I do want to see the course be challenging to the best players and to get a true champion because that is what you want with a major championship.

Idk, I kinda enjoyed it myself. Wasn't Beth Page like that about a decade ago and they had to spray water like every other group or something. Memory not too good. It was one of them.
Just kidding, but it was comical. They'll probably welcome the breeze with the heat.

I didn’t see the wind move a previously stationary ball on a green, but it did look like it was affecting the putts once they got going. We watched Dechambeau take like 20 runs at a 15 footer and never make the putt. My thought was that a pro woulda eventually figured out the putt if it wasn’t otherwise being moved. I did see a few drive into the teeth of the wind stop moving forward completely and fall straight down out of the air.

I was there. Set up at 17th a par 3. Walked with Tiger and DJ and it was great then went to the hole location. Near a vendor and a bathroom. Good spot. But yes the course was brutal for the players.

Not much going on this weekend for ole Skeeta to report on.Was hoping that a past Tigers would be in the field at the PGA Championship.Schema recently said that Lucas Glover would be a 4th alternate but on the eve of the tournament I haven't heard of any players dropping out so guess this will be one of those rare weekends we got nobody with Clemson ties to pull for down in Kiawah Island.

Lucas made it up to third alternate after Vijay dropped out, but he needed three more to drop. I was really hoping he would have made the cut in Charlotte and moved up the PGA Championship money list a few more spots, but it wasn't meant to be this year.

So for those that have teed it up at both

The Ocean Course at Kiawah and Harbortown in HHI you’re thoughts on playing both courses and was it worth the $300 plus greens fees ? I’m looking to take my son who graduates HS this year to a high end golf course and these two are at the top of my list. Thanks !

Relative value is different for everyone. Both courses are on most golfers bucket list as both are high end storied courses. Harbortown does not have the teeth of Kiawah as most holes are protected so the winds are not really an issue less 17 & 18. HT is a shot makers course with tight lies but forgiving greens. Kiawah in the fall is much tamer than Kiawah in the spring but is a bear either way.
If it were me I would do three days on Kiawah: 1st day would be 18 holes at Cougar Point. 2nd day would be 18 holes at Osprey Point. The final day would be 18 holes at the Ocean Course. Would be epic....

Agree. Be something the kid would never forget except I'd maybe swap harbortown for cougar just for the history. Definitely do osprey.

No brainer in my opinion. The Ryder Cup moment will live in history. He'll grow up watching Rory like we all watched Jack and arnie. Plus the Hollywood film featured it. This year's PGA. Plus I think Dottie pepper wrote a book about it as well as played one of the last world of golf matches filmed there.
Honestly, I'd take the extra day and play both. He only graduates from HS once. Kinda stepping into manhood only happens once and it'll be worth it in the end. He'll forget a lot but talk about this trip for life... Long after you're gone if he's a golf buff especially.

Harbortown is great esp with a caddie but if you're looking for better courses for extra play then Kiawah is your best bet and personally I prefer the Charleston area over HHI. You could try to play at Kiawah and Seabrook.

Both courses are very fine, I would try to find a way to get him on Yeaman's Hall which I like better than either of those two courses.
Incidentally, does any one know who laid out the Harbor Town golf course?

Yeaman's Hall is an old Seth Raynor course with a lot of old classic holes ..... redan green, biarritz green, etc. with really nice features. If you have ever been to the CC of Charleston, it is very much like that but much more interesting topography ...... not nearly as flat. I played there with Arnold Palmer in 2000 and had a great time.

around 1980, a coworker of mine was good friends with the (then) club pro. The course itself was a beautiful old layout, VERY well maintained.
It made Golf Digest's "50 Snobbiest Clubs in America" list back then. (Yes, they actually had the cajones to publish a list like that back then. Doubt they still do it in these PC Snowflake times.)

For some reason Pete gets the credit with Jack's help or consulting but didn't George Cobb actually do the original layout. I was also thinking Cobb helped on keowee key.
Guess I could Google it but I need to test my memory.

I don’t think you could find it by googling, but George Cobb did the original routing. Dye followed the original routing except for 17 and 18. That’s why the 18th green is so far from the clubhouse. They had already started building the clubhouse when Dye decided to change the finishing two holes. Otherwise, 18 would have finished at the clubhouse.

I think we had this discussion before, but Palmetto and Yeaman’s Hall are my favorite courses in SC, and I believe you said that they were your two favorites as well. George Cobb indeed did the original routing at Harbor Town.

Wow ....... you guys (and gal) are amazing. I thought I was only one of a handful that knew that story. Pete told me that both of his best golf courses, Harbor Town and Long Cove, were laid out by other architects ....... Harbor Town by George Cobb and Long Cove by Frank Duane.
And Clemgal, Cobb did design Keowee Key ...... long story behind it.
Marshall ..... you can add Palmetto to my list too. I do like The Ocean Course. Many players may not notice, but the way Pete laid out the holes, the further back the tee you play from, the different angle you have to the fairway. At the rear tee you have to decide how much of the dogleg you want to cut off (or how far you want to hit your tee shot over the boondocks) and where your ball will stop. The pros did not originally like the course because they had a hard time figuring this out so they were hitting the tee shots through the fairways into the far rough. As the tees go forward they start to line up with the fairway and if you hit the ball straight you are ok.

time to play a Kiawah Island course was WAY back when Cougar Point was still called Marsh Point. (Gary Player's original design.) All I remember from the day was the WIND, and the fact that I was hitting it over the back of every green because the divots came out of the ground so easily, I was hitting the ball with more clubhead speed than normal.
