Jaelyn Jay should put on 20lbs and become a stud OL

Nov 14, 2021, 10:04 PM

At this point, he doesn't see the field. He has Allen ahead of him for another year and it looks like Bringingstool has passed him. The dude is big, already has to lose weight to play TE, he should just blow up and be a super athletic O-LINE guy and if he doesn't want to block, then he should move to DE. It definitely appears playing TE is not his strong suit and I am guessing it's a catching issue, just a guess. With the strength and talent praise we have heard from coaches, there has to be a position a guy of his size and strength can fill.

I will say that I know Ferentz at Iowa uses the philosophy of finding oversized high school TE's and turns them into OL. He made a comment last year that he likes the athleticism of TEs and they have faster feet, skinny ankles and smaller lower legs. When I heard him say that I remembered Caldwell saying he liked OL with skinny ankles. But if you look at Iowa OL weights and heights, they are typically couple inches taller and 15-20lbs lighter than Clemson OL. You don't see them carrying the same belly fat.

Just a thought, seems Lau should be seeing the field after 3yrs. Saw Ennis, Price, Bringingstool and Allen all with catch opportunities yesterday and don't recall seeing Lay on the field unless I just missed it?

I think Lay should be considered for the OL, and he might be a good one. I still remember the great 1978 team.

In mid season, both AA guard Joe Bostic and All-ACC tackle Steve Kenney were out for a couple of games. One was injured, one had mono, and we had no depth. Back then, few fans knew much about assistant coaches, including OL Coach Danny Ford.

Danny decided to move TE Anthony King inside to the OL, and King had never played inside. King played well enough for us to win those two games. Bostic and Kenney returned, and everybody knew who Danny Ford was.

I think that decision got Danny hired as HC when Charley Pell left after the season.

Maybe if he is put at DE, pointed in one direction, then the attack mode kicks in?? I obviously don't know but just seems like there should be an opportunity for the guy. The coaches have bragged about him but more in the mode of stature vs playing.

Maybe he doesn't get it? But sometimes it's, see guy with ball, kill guy with ball!!! We had a guy on our HS Team that was DE size but played NT because he was a physical specimen. Obviously easier in HS than college but still seems like there should be a fit??

The few times he has been in blocking hasn't been pretty. He is a speciman but doesn't seem the light has came on quite yet for him.

Shifting positions in college is a big deal. Like, I don't think non-players realize how hard.

You start at zero, at the bottom of the heap. You don't know anything. Nothing's reflexive. You make a mistake in high school...well, there's only so much to know, so many plays to memorize, NBD. Your Superior Athleticism and Superior Physique will get you through the rough spots. College, it's a mountain. Concepts. A playbook the size of the Yellow Pages. Embedded muscle memory. Especially the last. Everybody else seems to be ten steps ahead of you. They do things by reflex because they've done them a million times, every rep in comparison - and it's hard to get reps, they're precious, and hard to get, in college - is scary for you because you don't know what you're doing. You dither, hesitate...and get beat, and get beat again. Everybody caws and laughs and snickers, and the respect...isn't there. You're bottom of the dung hill. And everybody you're up against is elite, has beaten a million people just to get where they are. It's daunting.

Rinse and repeat. Do that for even a month, then a season. Get crushed for awhile. Feel where you are psychologically. You hating football yet? Because this sh!t will seriously make you hate football. Especially if you're maybe 20 years old and are only used to being the baddest thing on the field. It's tough.

So...switching positions is a big deal. It works...occasionally, if the guy has sufficient ability, the coaches have sufficient patience, and will build the guy up when he starts doubting himself and dragging...which is going to be pretty much all the time, early. It's a Big Serious Project, and should not be lightly entered into...by either the player or the staff, unless everybody's absolutely clear-eyed about what's going to happen.

Ferentz clearly knows the process, and how to handle it. Not many others seem to. For those less cognizant of it, it's not a good idea.

He seems to be a player I would keep an eye on for hitting the portal. The coaches have lost confidence in him. Maybe he finds a better situation where getting playing time helps him develop (eg step down to a G5 or one of the better FCS schools). With Allen, Ennis, and Briningstool he’s not going to get game reps moving forward.
