1500 to replace the breaker panel. 1500.

Jan 20, 2022, 9:21 AM

Looks like I'll be using my suicide plug tomorrow and hooking it to the inside breaker panel.

Even though I'm having to figure out 60 years of shoddy wiring.

For example. I turn off EVERY SINGLE BREAKER IN THE HOUSE. Kitchen light still on.

What about the big one?

Jan 20, 2022, 9:22 AM

You try that one? Sometimes it might stick, so you can lick it for a little lubrication.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Don't have a big one. That's why I wanted to update

Jan 20, 2022, 9:23 AM

the breaker panel so I would have a main breaker to turn off current coming from the line

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I like your funny words magic man

So your main breaker panel has no main

Jan 20, 2022, 9:33 AM

breaker??????

I'd say either:

A) you have a service disconnect outside where power can be disconnected, and what you call your "main breaker panel" is a sub panel or remote distribution panel.

B) it's a split-bus panel, where the main breaker is inline with the others, so it might throw you off at first and appear to be a regular circuit breaker.

You might want to call the man. Start at your meter and following the wiring/conduit. I'd bet there's a service disconnect of fuse block outside.

I figure the service disconnect is the meter

Jan 20, 2022, 9:47 AM

if I don't pay my bill they'll pull the meter and cut power

I have never ever in my life heard of this.

Jan 20, 2022, 9:52 AM

There HAS to be some sort of circuit breaker or fuse block at your meter. Do you think they come out and pull overhead SCADA switches to turn off power to your house? No way dude.

Actually I googled it... apparently it wasn't mandated by the NEC until 2020.... but I've still never seen or heard of a house that doesn't have one.

Dude. It doesn’t matter. He is “comfortable” in his salary and job. Who needs more money or work harder or put in more time to gain a better position …….to you know, have more money. Remember, he is comfortable, so price isn’t the issue…….unless it’s over $1000.

NEVER EVER pull permits for a contractor.

Jan 20, 2022, 9:59 AM [ in reply to Going to see how much the electricians will charge ]

If the work is shoddy and the permit is in your name, you get burned. If it is in the name of the contractor, the locality goes after them.

Agreed. That was the conversation with the general

IIRC, your house is like mine, in that

Jan 20, 2022, 9:27 AM

there is an original 100A panel inside your house that used to power everything and somewhere along the way a 200A panel was put in outside that supplies the old 100A panel, as well as HVAC, well pump, outbuildings, etc. Is this correct?

If so, the I'd say that your kitchen light is powered from the outside panel... or maybe it's solar (not likely) or maybe you're just seeing a glare from somewhere? or maybe it's one of those harbor freight velcro lights that is battery powered?

That's exactly how it is.

Jan 20, 2022, 9:28 AM [ in reply to IIRC, your house is like mine, in that ]

Also, I have 4 breaker panels on the property.

The main one outside.

The one inside.

One by the HVAC unit that has breakers running to stuff I have no clue what it goes to.

And a breaker panel in the shop. That is supplied by one of the 4 panels that I have yet to figure out.

Re: That's exactly how it is.

Jan 20, 2022, 9:44 AM

Mine is not all that different.

I have:

200A main panel outside by the meter...

A) 100A sub panel in the sun room, which was formerly a carport. This used to be the main service disconnect, back in the 1960's, I guess. I replaced that old Federal Pacific panel a few years back with Square D QO stuff. It feeds the lights and outlets in the house, including appliances. The neutral bus in this panel does not have a direct ground, but rather ties back to the neutral bus in the main panel, since they're attached to the same building. The main panel is properly grounded AFAIK

B) drinking water well pump

C) shallow water well pump (that we don't use anymore)

D) HVAC sub panel with service disco. which has breakers for compressor, blower, and heat strips. This neutral bus also ties back to the main panel... same building.

E)100A sub panel in my workshop (added by me), has a 50A/240V outlet for table saw/planer, 50A/240V outlet for air compressor/dust collection, 20A for outlets, 20A for lighting. Since it is a separate building from the main panel, this panels neutral bus is grounded properly at the building.

F)60A sub panel in the "pump house" that feeds pool pump VFD, salt chlorine generator, and "grandma's storage building", and pool house, and pool light (which we don't use any more). This panel is also grounded, since the pump house is a stand-alone building.

yay for old houses!

Also when they closed in the carport for the living room

Jan 20, 2022, 9:29 AM [ in reply to IIRC, your house is like mine, in that ]

they put all of the circuits in the outside panel.

So when I charge the inside panel with the generator, part of the house still won't have power.

Jan 20, 2022, 9:32 AM

there but the power company will probably charge you more than $1500

I recommend getting a warsh tub and putting 5 gallons of water with 2 cups of salt in it
Then stand barefoot in the tub while you cut the line where it comes out of the meter
I know you’ve got some good bolt cutters to search and seize your players’ stash

Make sure FBJr is filming it

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

How big is your generator?

Jan 20, 2022, 9:51 AM

And how often will you need it?

This seems like an awful lot of work for a $500 Harbor Freight generator that might power a freezer and a lamp at the same time...if you can get it cranked since the ethanol laced gas you let sit in it for 6 months has ruined the carburetor.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

9k running watts

Jan 20, 2022, 9:53 AM

at the previous house I could run everything but the HVAC unit and water heater.

To run the water heater I would turn off all the lights, turn on water heater for about 40 minutes. then shut it back off and turn the lights on again.

Now I have a gas water heater so I don't have to worry about cold showers anymore.
