I have watched some great assistant coaches and coordinators come through Clemson in my time. I have watched young guys grow into head coaches and have seen the wisdom of the older coaches.
Bill Oliver was a defensive mastermind. He could X and O with anyone.

We need to pay whatever it takes to keep Venables for a long, long time. And if Swinney should ever step down or retire for any reason, pay whatever it takes to make Venables the head coach.

Venables seems to be the kind of guy who's happy in an assistant coach position...he's said as much before. That doesn't mean someone couldn't lure him away but I don't think it's his primary career goal like it was Morris's, who we all knew was taking a HC job--it was just a question of when.
Eventually someone will make head coach overtures towards him...probably teams in the SEC and ACC who are tired of losing to him. But I don't think anything short of that would sway him away. Sure, Dabo looks to be here for a really long time but it's not unprecedented for a Coordinator-level coach to stay in one place for a long time too--Bud Foster, Mickey Andrews, etc.

...money talks. Which is why I think we should be willing to pony up whatever it takes to keep him. If that means paying him a salary that would make your average HC envious, I'm okay with that.

kept him from blossoming for so long. I mean, I know Oklahoma had some solid Ds but he wasn't talked about as an up-and-coming HC guy until he got to Clemson.

I know nothing about OU's campus or about Norman. It could be a gorgeous place, or it could be a dump in the middle of a vast prairie. (I've only been in the state once and it was not the most impressive place I've ever been.) But it seems to me that Oklahoma is missing that certain something that Clemson has. They have no hills to hold something special.

Although he is still a great coach, I think he understands now how big of an impact Venables was to his success.
Glad we have Coach V, hope he and Dabo stay at Clemson forever. Can coaches be tenured? (No, I'm not referring to Jack Leggett)

I think that Bob Stoops looking after his little brother Mike was his fatal mistake when it came down to BV staying with 1-3d control, with little brother Mike Stoops with 2-3ds control and calling the in game plays of the defense that BV built during the time Mike Stoops was away playing HC at AZ. With BV coming to Clemson with total control I'm sure was an easy choice. BV had I'm sure, enough of little brother Stoops stirring in his pots, and he wanted nothing to do it. BV is the type that don't want or need Mike Stoops interfering with what he does in running his defense. I'm betting that it was a very easy decision for BV to make, and I Personally believe that BV will be at Clemson for a very long time. He has already said many times that he wasn't interested of becoming a HC. Go BV, Go Tigers!!!! Long live our defensive Master nut cutter!!!

I agree 100%. However, I fear that in just a few short years when Bill Snyder (who is currently 75) decides to retire yet again, K-State will come calling for Coach V. I think that's the only place he would consider leaving us for.

I won't disagree with you, but I hope not. Being a Million plus dollar DC is a much easier than being an HC with tons of responsibilities and being the one that turns the lights out and locking the doors. I'm personally just hoping that BV is so comfortable in is his life with being the DC at Clemson, and Clemson will be his home of choice through out his career. Go BV with Clemson being his long time home!!!

I met him Spring game his first year here

In the store ground level entrance to West End Zone.
He went through the store in about 10 minutes and had 2 arms draped with shirts and anything orange. I had 2 shirts to buy. Looked at me and said my boys and family have all red stuff so i have to stock up. Down another aisle he went, grabbed more, check out counter and gone. Even Pearman was in there and half laughing watching him.
I told my son who was with me-- if he plays defense like he shops, nobody is going to score on us.
Little did I know---
