Card fans are really confident that their qb can run at

Wilkins' side. They say at 310 lbs, he is way to slow to catch their qb. I'm really going to enjoy watching this game.

Agreed. He may be big but he's quick, now obviously Lamar would be gone in a foot race but BV does an amazing job at getting our D-line to have quick feet.

We just have so much beef up front ...so much talented , big time beef . He will get his runs in for sure , but it won't look a thing like 2 weeks ago vs FSU . Clemson is a better defense across the board , stars or no stars . BV is a great equalizer in the coaching box ...and he's had 9 days to prep .

They might be right once or twice, but when he gets caught and he will it is going to hurt enough to make him think twice about hitting the same hole.

did you see our defense chase Charlie Ward in 1992?

for a D-line, quickness kills,
and Ward had plenty of it.
We had a D that boasted:
Wayne Simmons, Ashley Sheppard, Brentson Buckner (all NFL'ers) , Carlos Curry, Tim Jones, Robert O'Neal, Eric Geter, and Norris Brown as starters.
Bryan Dawkins was a freshman. Dexter McCleon and Lamarick Simpson too. Warren Forney and Pierre Wilson were solid backup DT's.
The team was faster and more athletic than any other team we saw - even FSU's defense. They were coming off being 11-1 the year before.
But they never caught that kid that night, just like the 1982 team never caught up with Doug Flutie,
and in the end Charlie Ward drove FSU to a game-winning TD in the last 2 minutes in front of an insane 80k+ orange clad.
I truly hated it, but it was a great game. Some say the best ever played at DV.
Quickness kills.
I hope like hades I'm not going to watch a repeat of that.... once, even, was too much.

If Lamar is too fast for Wilkins (which I doubt), we have Chris Register and Richard Yeargin.
Of course Lamar is faster than Wilkins, but Wilkins will be able to hold his own. Louisville fans have been proven to not be all that bright.

ward and dunn never played together.. and, honestly i don't remember ward running at will on us.. just the 4 int's... our offense wasn't what it is, or can be, now... and, our coaching isn't even close to what it is now..

Ward was the best runner/passer ever.
For the time he ran a pretty sophisticated system for Bowden,
and then was good enough to play NBA.
Kid was a baller, and he stone cold stabbed us in the heart in 92...
took the starch right out of that team for the rest of the year.

The difference of course is that in 1993 there weren't many offenses utilizing running qbs , so defenses were not set up to defend against it . Nowadays , they are ...becuase about 2/3rds of the CFB world utilizes some form of read option and the QB is just another runner who can throw it . I think we will be alright , BV ...he real good at it .

I beg to differ... Ward did run circles around our D

even as Wayne Simmons and Ashley Sheppard were two of the fastest LB's to ever play the position at Clemson -
BJ Goodson was the fastest LB at the Combine last year, and Simmons would have beaten him hands down -
he was legit 4.45-4.5. Go watch the video of him taking an INT to the House in Tallahassee in 89 (I believe).
And yes, our O sucked that year, and the Head coaching was horrendous.
But the point was not to denigrate OUR team, it was rather to talk about just how good that D was -
nearly as good as 1990, certainly as athletic just not as deep.
But Ward had NBA quickness - which he went on to prove for the Knicks - and he was simply too quick even in small spaces
for the larger D players we had. Just as Doug Flutie was in 82/83 - Danny Ford never beat that kid - never.
Because he couldn't catch that little sucker.
My point was that anyone who thinks our current D can catch anyone has had the orange-tints on for way too long.
It's going to take Brent V's greatest job to corral Jackson. And a D-line that plays hard but as a group.
When one player leaves a hole, that's when someone pops out and is running in the secondary.
Here's hoping they're in 3rd and 15 all day long... all day.

but its not just Wilkins, Jackson is faster than most DE's, so I'm not sure that's a relevant point. If either of our DE's get too far upfield on pass rush or lose contain it's going to open up Jackson's running ability and his ability to improvise on the run which is where I believe he's more dangerous.
It's going to be a game where both DE's are going to have to strive to keep Jackson in the pocket, not let him get outside. I'll take my chances with him throwing from the pocket before I let him improvise on the run.

He's way too slow to catch Lamar Jackson. He won't have to catch him though. If defense is chasing Jackson we are in trouble. Have to bottle him up. All about control and penetrating LOS, which I believe Clemson can do.

First of all Wilkins just has to be quick enough to beat his man,

set the edge and let the faster players run free and do their thing.
Also, Wilkins and Dex both run a 4.8 forty, that is smoking fast for their size and both are extremely quick and strong. That is how come they both are so disruptive.
Good luck tweety birds.

I love our d-line as much as anyone but Lamar certainly cannot be slept on. You can't put a hand on him, you have to wrap him up and keep your eyes on the belt. I give credit where credit is due and after watching two of his games yesterday, his ability to cut on a dime is remarkable. It isn't just raw speed, he has laser-like cutting ability. If you don't square him up, is gone. The linebackers will have to play disciplined football this weekend and no arm-tackling if we want to contain this young man.
