Wanted to follow up, even though talk has died down...

Feb 28, 2018, 3:38 PM

My first paycheck with the new tax law came through today. My savings are $144 for the month.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Technically $129.60 after the Lord gets his share.***

No...tithe is off the gross.***

Feb 28, 2018, 3:41 PM

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Gotcha....that one always confused me.

Feb 28, 2018, 3:44 PM

Gross would make sense, but that whole "Render unto Caesar" verse made me wonder if the tithe was pre or post-Caesar rendering.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-20yr.jpgringofhonor-obed.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Well, I'm sure not everyone does it the way I do...

Feb 28, 2018, 3:45 PM

To me, if I tithed post-tax, I'd be saying that the government has more right to my stuff than God does.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Oh I get that line of thinking, but if you take

Feb 28, 2018, 3:48 PM

that Matthew verse quite literally "Render to Caesar what is.....and to God what is God's...." It almost makes it sound like they're mutually exclusive, so from an accounting standpoint, the tithe would be off net income.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-20yr.jpgringofhonor-obed.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Naw. If I owe you $100 and RH Tig $500...

Feb 28, 2018, 3:52 PM

I don't go to RH Tig and say, since I have less money because I paid you $100, I shouldn't owe him as much. I owe you both what I owe you. They are separate, which is the point of the Scripture teaching there.

Now, I'm very glad the government sees fit to not tax the money I give to my church. But that's the opposite of what we're talking about, and obviously not a Biblical teaching, but a government policy.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

just as an FYI to all of this, I would recommend

Feb 28, 2018, 3:55 PM

NOT being in a position of owing RH Tig money.

It never EVER ends well.

Interesting, I see where you're going with that.

Feb 28, 2018, 3:58 PM [ in reply to Naw. If I owe you $100 and RH Tig $500... ]

How about this one, from Leviticus 27:30-34

"If a man wishes to redeem some of his tithe, he shall add a fifth to it. "

Was this the earliest version of payday lending?

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-20yr.jpgringofhonor-obed.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Not really. Remember, that tithe wasn't about money.

Feb 28, 2018, 5:04 PM

Not back then. It was land, fruit, cattle...stuff. This is an instruction about buying back some of the stuff earmarked as tithe. God allowed this. If one basket of apples, or one particular cow, that got earmarked for tithe is something you really wanted, you could pay for it, with a 20% surcharge on top of its value.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Why do you owe RH Tig $500? What have you been up to?***

Feb 28, 2018, 4:07 PM [ in reply to Naw. If I owe you $100 and RH Tig $500... ]

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Bonus...no tithe necessary on any tax refund.

Feb 28, 2018, 3:47 PM [ in reply to Gotcha....that one always confused me. ]

That is, the tithe on whatever tax refund I get was already paid, since I tithe off gross.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

hate to say it but

Feb 28, 2018, 7:14 PM [ in reply to No...tithe is off the gross.*** ]

That is legalistic.

And you may have already gotten your reward talking about it here.

Just saying.

I'm just stating a fact, not tooting my horn or anything. I didn't bring it up, someone else did.

Also, I'm not looking for any kind of "reward".

Your comment is very odd to me.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Also, you don't seem to know what "legalism" means.

Feb 28, 2018, 3:44 PM [ in reply to I'm not really up to speed on what may/may not be changing ]

However, the tax rate still applies for the whole year. So when the tax return goes in next year, the government will owe me that amount I overpaid in January.

Home equity interest deduction is gone (for now anyway—-expires in 2025 or so).

Mortgage interest deduction still very much on the table up to a mortgage of $750k (or $1M if you bought before December last year)
