Has Lyn J been working on improving his upright running style

Jul 21, 2021, 11:26 AM

He seemed to get stood up a lot on first contact

power back that lowers his head and moves piles. Not every RB has to do that. It would certainly help him a lot if he were able to run through arm tackles better, but he is most effective running away from and around would-be tacklers rather than running into and over them, which requires him to keep his head up a little more than many would like to see. He came to Clemson at about 175 lbs and is now up to 195, so he's added some muscle and should have a great year.

As I recall, Wayne Gallman runs upright. Wayne ran with power, despite that, and it worked well enough for him, but as Smiling Tiger®pointed out, speed and elusiveness once he gets into the open field is more of Lyn-J's strength.

He ain't changing his running style

and I don't think it hurts him. LJD's issues are he doesn't pack a punch in his shoulder pads and he isn't explosive.

This is why we better hope Pace or another RB takes over the top job. We need a RB the opposing defense must plan for.

He has used being quick, not power.
He is a very good RB, but less so if he needs to bust a tackle.
He will again be a good part of our total package. I see him gaining near a thousand this year just due to the long break away runs.

Being old (and beer) made me think back on a couple different type guys some here never heard of.
-- Walter Payton would go over, through, or just destroy anyone for a yard.
-- Jimmy Brown was like butter, seemed like no one ever touched him.

Yes. I think there is room for several backs to play a role in the overall gameplan for the run game. I think several backs will be used in a way that plays to their strengths. I could see Lyn-J being more effective after the defense has been worn down some, and he could pick up chunk yardage more easily at that point.

He's not a between the tackles runner so no, I don't think so. Anxious to see what Shipley, Pace and Mafah can do. I think Mafah will be the "surprise" (not to those of us who are paying attention) RB of the year.
