What was Larry Shyatt’s best acc tournament?

Mar 10, 2021, 9:06 PM

Anybody remember if he won any games in the tournament?

Larry hosted FSU in the Larry Shyatt Invitational game most years. He beat them once to go 1-5 in the ACC tourney for his tenure.

Yeah. That said I really like Larry and he loved Clemson. He knows the game. He won 2 titles on Donovan’s staff at Florida. Was an assistant at the Dallas Mavericks. But could never get anything going as HC at Clemson.

“He loved Clemson” LOL I remember hearing that all the time.

He loved his paycheck from Clemson. He was a jerk to people around campus.

He was the lowest paid coach in the ACC and paid his Wyoming buyout out of pocket - more than 1/2 of his first years salary. Sorry he upset your friend.

What was his “low” salary at Clemson?

He made in the $400ks. His buyout from Wyoming was over $250k.

Not sure why this is triggering you so badly. I never said he deserved a raise, extension, or was done wrong in anyway by Clemson. Just that I liked the guy and think he wanted to be at Clemson. As a former assistant at Clemson he knew exactly what he was walking into in terms of facilities, fan support, and administrative support. He left a school that was willing to match our terms. By paying his own buyout he made less money over the next 5 years than he would have at Wyoming. A pretty clear sign that he was betting on himself to be able to succeed at Clemson. He failed to do so. It’s been a long time. Get over it.

Good guy, loved Clemson, hired because he was an assistant on successful Clemson teams, but was in over his head and couldn’t recreate the magic.

Both were awful hires.

We haven’t earned a lot of respect in the ACC down through the years in the ACC. We are better than we have been in the past but have a ways to go to earn much respect in basketball but we are about to breakout!

Shyatt's facilities were beyond atrocious. We have thrown over 100 million at them since and they are still mediocre compared to the top programs in the country. We finish middle of the pack and spend near the bottom, that is where we are at. That being said the new little john annex is nice and means we will not have to go toe to toe with mid-majors for players. The talent level is up considerably from 3 years ago. I do not know what some of you guys expect. If we made a commitment to basketball we could finish at the top of the pack, but that does not seem to be an aim of the AD. Recruiting is a dirty business in this sport and it seems Clemson is content flying below the radar in Bball.

badge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

So, Shyatt's facilities were atrocious...

Mar 11, 2021, 12:00 AM

so by default, so were the facilities of Cliff Ellis and Rick Barnes... I was there during the height of the Ellis years, and those players didn't come to Clemson for the bag. Guys like Horace Grant, Grayson Marshall, Dale Davis, Elden Campbell, Sharone Wright, Chris Whitney, David Young, or Marion Cash could have gotten more bags at some other schools, but Ellis won the regular season title with fewer benefits than those north carolina blue bloods, virginia, maryland and georgia tech...
Barnes probably did the most with less of any coach that Clemson has ever had... Bill Foster did a pretty good job as well but he had future professional talent on a few of his rosters...

Mar 11, 2021, 9:32 AM

recruiting 30-40 years ago. That seems like a relatively recent phenomenon that's just become more and more important over the last 20ish years.

Bill Foster's problem is that he didn't know who his best players were and basically let Harvey Grant walk out the door and become an All-American at Oklahoma.

Barnes had 1 top 20 class, that is it. Buckner is the only player he sent to the NBA. Barnes did however get the most out of his players, and his teams were hard-nosed and physical.

Mar 16, 2021, 12:01 AM [ in reply to So, Shyatt's facilities were atrocious... ]

that's pretty embarrassing/pitiful to have an ACC team play in a facility like that. Not that it was bad for a Civic Center, but there was no Greenville at the time.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Why would Clemson or any middle of the road program

Mar 16, 2021, 12:46 AM [ in reply to Re: What was Larry Shyatt’s best acc tournament? ]

invest in infrastructure for basketball when the best college players in the best programs play only one year and leave? IMHO college hoops is not a viable sport -- only a March Madness gambling event.

Still Clemson Basketball has really benefitted from football infrastructure that they have been allowed to share. A win-win.

Not a Brownell fan, I don't watch Clemson Basketball anymore, I have Rutgers in my pool, but I'll still feel good for the guys if they hustle to a win in Game 1.

Brownell is 5-10 in the ACC tournament but providing reliable information is not your strong suit.
