ESPN downfall attributed to SEC

Jun 2, 2016, 2:41 PM

Partnership

I got no link... But they spent too much money on them and now with the cable and satellite companies wanting their cut...it has actually hurt their ability to negotiate

Winners? NBCSports and FoxSports

And in my opinion one of those two in the future aligns with ACC

It has nothing to do with that. It has to do with people who don't watch any sports finding a cheaper alternative to cable with streaming services. That's all, nothing more.

that the SEC network has been extremely profitable for ESPN and is part of what's keeping them afloat.

The below article works out some of the numbers

from reading articles and posts on the net, and talking to several of my Gamecock friends, they have been mostly underwhelmed with what the SEC Network has provided content-wise. Nobody likes the 4 hours a days of the Finebaum guy. There's only so many times you can watch the Alabama Spring game and not get tired of it. Other than a few more live baseball games, what has it done? Most games are on SECNetwork+, which is the same thing as ESPN3.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Doesn't matter if they like the content

Jun 2, 2016, 3:08 PM

They're still paying for the subscription, and they'll keep paying it (and so will I during football season) because they want the football games, they want SEC baseball on Thursday nights, basketball games on TV, etc.

Initial profits for ESPN were high because cable and satellite sold it as a promotional package with tier 1 programing. Most of those packages will not carry the channel as tier 1 moving forward as ESPN originally thought. That means it will require subscribers to have at least tier 2 to continue getting SECN. That means ESPNs profit margin will shrink because SEC contract is already signed. It is the reason there was so much panic right before the SECN was released, it wasn't the automatic sell to cable and satellite that ESPN expected. Also the reason ESPN isn't pushing for the ACC network.

ACC network would.

LIke him or not, Finebaum get's great ratings for that time slot and is a master at getting stupid rednecks to call in, which creates great comedy.

What are they supposed to show on there?

because he was allowed to take even more outrageous calls than he gets now. All of his advertisements were for gentleman's clubs and divorce lawyers. It was great.

I would say it does factor in...

Jun 2, 2016, 3:37 PM

And the SEC thing isn't the only thing ESPN over hypes and gives too much biased coverage towards. Just look at their NBA coverage and they way they cover Lebron and the Cavs. They hired Brian Windhorst, whose only claim to fame is reporting on Lebron since he was in middle school, to be an NBA analyst. The guy is clueless about basketball and just writes love letters to Lebron. If Lebron didn't exist Windhorst would have never been hired by ESPN. There are more examples, but it would take to long to go over. Another factor is the sensationalism they push, with guys like Stephen A Smith and Skip Bayless. Nobody likes listening to those guys. So many people I come across only watch ESPN during games, which is what I do to. So yes the exit from cable is a major factor. But ESPN got arrogant and lazy and did things to turnoff people who used to watch it all the time

We're tied to ESPN through 2026. The SEC will be free to test the open market 3 years before then. Our rights deals are terrible and not getting better anytime soon.

I'd probably say that ESPiN's financial issues...

Jun 2, 2016, 5:58 PM

arose because they outgrew their market. I'll admit that the SEC Network was one of the ploys to gain 'shelf space,' but it's probably helping more than hurting their cause.

IMO, the SEC Network will be the last to go after the U and the deuce.

Their problem is simply solved. They need to start brokering games to other networks after taking a small profit. They should sell, sell, sell games to anybody and everybody, lease the equipment and personnel services to NBC, ABC, CBS, Fox and anyone else who wants to televise a game.

Dumping overhead has already started.
