Anyone ever been on hunting and fishing trips in Alaska?

Dec 22, 2021, 12:02 AM

I am coming up on having lived here in Alaska for five years this coming June.

I am just now coming on the backside of a pretty painful experience in my personal life and my number one priority for 2022 is to rediscover my love for the outdoors - especially fly fishing!

That being said, I am all ears to hearing about any experiences that any of you may have had in this amazing state.

That is a bucket list item for me!

I have seen pictures and talked with many friends that have gone and the experiences sound amazing. Hoping others reply.

I’m sorry to hear about your personal experience. I can relate to a degree maybe.

Hoping you get some feedback!

Lived in Anchorage for three years. Spring: Drive down on the Kenai for the first three weekends in June that the kings are in. Walk up Deep Creek as far as the marker. Fish salmon eggs or glow bug
equivalent on flyrod. July: Fish the west bank of the Kenai with chuck and duck "fly" fishing. Avoid the Russian unless you are well armed and like combat fishing. Summer: Drive up to the Willow Creek Campground. Hike out to the last mouth of the creek, fish pinks and chums till the silvers come in.
Lots of fun on fly rod. Consider fly-ins to King Salmon for giant rainbows - first week in April
if you like fishing in the snow. Fish muddlers or sculpin imitations on an eight weight. Any time the reds are in during the summer, fish creek running into the Kenai with lil'corky, glow bugs, etc for dollies. Just a few suggestions. Talk to the local fly shops. Did floats on the Copper, camped on the Moraine. Best assignment in the Air Force.

Haven't hunted there as I've not been there when hunting seasons begin in the Fall, however have fished there 3 times.

The fishing is spectacular and you can do a lot of DIY trips. Chris Batin has put out a lot of books on fishing and I think on hunting too. He may have a web page too? His books are a great resource for DIY fishing. If you time it right, anybody can get into fish. Check Batin out.

I splurged once and did a fly out fishing trip for silver salmon. Fished about 5 days and caught tons of fresh from the sea silvers that had just entered this coastal river. Used a 9wt and 8 wt fly rod mostly with streamers. Awesome experience.

Since you live there, stop by a local fly shop. Everybody up there is extremely helpful.

Keep your line mended and go get 'em.

Went to Ketchecan Juneau Skagway and glacier bay on an inside passage cruise several years ago. Salmon seemed to be jumping out of the water at Ketchecan and there was a young boy who literally caught a big one in his hands and put it in his cooler that he had with him. Took the old gold train at Skagway up into the mountain. Walked the wooden sidewalks in Juneau the capital. Looked like an old town out of the west. Lots of gun smoke type of saloons with pool and beer drinking going on. Flew in a float plane over to cabin where hiring was done. They grilled salmon on an open grill and had to stand watch to make sure the bears did not get the salmon. Was very cool and had a light rain most of time. Did not go into the interior but would have liked to have. Beautiful and natural and fresh would be the way I would describe Alaska. Be safe and I pray that you overcome the personal issues.????

Visited my cousin who lives in Homer a few years ago but the weather was crappy and didn’t get to go fishing. Drove past several places on the Kenai River that looked like wonderful spots. Supposed to be world class salmon fishing. Ate our fill of halibut while we were there. Her husband says halibut cheeks are the “filet mignon” of fish. She just boiled them in water with a little butter and salt and we ate them with drawn butter like lobster or crab. Making me hungry thinking about it. Hoping to go back and visit again this summer and maybe get in some fishing. Alaska is the most beautiful place I have ever been.

Fished this summer on the Kenai river for salmon. It was great. We fished out of Copper Landing.

I have always wanted to visit Alaska and do some fishing. I would be a little apprehensive about hunting. I read an article where this guy tracked a bear for 7 days or so he thought he was tracking the bear. It turns out the bear was tracking him. He just got the shots off in time before he became the bears dinner.

I hope and pray the New Year will bring many positive your way. God Bless you this holiday season and in 2022.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.
