I agree. I was also a senior that year and that '81 season wasn't predicted. We were coming off a 6-5 1980 year. The Georgia win at the beginning of the year was a huge boost and it was probably 8 games in before things looked like we could go all the way.

Last year and this year offer such higher expectations. I've never been more excited about Clemson Football.

I believe, and I've always believed in our Tigers. When you hold something close and dear to your heart, its a normal human reaction to believe in it, or them. Yes in 1981 nobody had a clue to where our team was headed until about the 7th or 8th game into the season bc our D had proven by that time in our schedule that they could stop any offense that tried to get in the end zone. Only One team scored more than a TD on us that year, and that was Wake. The only reason wake could score was bc we was so far ahead of them, Danny let the water boy and a few of the cheerleaders get some playing time. Our D didn't allowed no more than One TD a game with the exception of Wake, and our run offense score 82 points on them. In the NCG, Nebraska score a TD in the 1st Qtr, and a TD with 2 pt conversion in the 4th Qtr. Our D gave up 105 pts for the entire season, and our O scored 338 pts for the season. No matter how those scores are added or subtracted for a full season, it spells True National Champions anyway you try to Add it up. Our 1981 Tiger D was a monster, 12 head coaches, and 12 offensive coordinators could not find ways to score more than a TD on our Tiger defense except for wake, and you can honestly say that Danny let them have more than one TD bc, he was resting our D for the Tarholes the following week at Chapel Hill where we won 10-8....

You are certainly right in that the '81 results were not

predicted by anybody. I am sure no one will admit it now, but I remember all sorts of rumblings about canning Danny were going around before the 1980 UsuK game. (Lack of offense, no imagination, 3 yards and a cloud of dust, yada yada.) Willie Underwood may well have saved Danny's job that day. After '81, Danny was golden, and 3 yards and a cloud of dust looked good years to come. :)

George Dostal (strength coach) made a sign pre-season that

said "Clemson 11-0, beats Nebraska in the Orange Bowl".

Somewhere on the web there is a photo of him holding it up.

Not sure why he had that vision, but I suppose those close tothe team knew how really talented we had been in 1980 (though inexperienced) and sort of suspected how great the 1981 season might be.

You are so correct. Willie Underwood with either 2 or 3 interceptions definitely saved Danny's behind.

As much as I love the high octane offense of the last 15 years I am still a softie for the old 3 yards and a cloud of dust. Grind it out football!!

Go Tigers!

I must have seen you too! 34 years May. I also agree I feel more excitement going into this year than ever before. I just want us to live up to our expectations. It's been a fun filled last 5 years

Just remembered that I also graduated in August '82. 2 credits short in May. Guess a lot of us walked together!
