GT extends Paul Johnson's contract..good or bad for Tigers?

That's fine. Yeah they have a solid team this year, but the

overall talent level in that program has been trending downward under Johnson and we don't really have to compete much with them for players right now. They were a thorn in our side in Atlanta with other coaches too, I'd rather them be a thorn that doesn't recruit well and take our chances with that.

Well it means we still don't have to worry about them taking our recruits.

Yup. PJ is one of the worst recruiters in college football. He and his staff just plain don't care. Atlanta is a recruiting hotbed and they don't even recruit their own hometown thoroughly.

Hate playing that system every year, but the upside is, you don't have to worry about GT taking blue-chip guys away from you.

I never have understood clemson fans thinking ga tech is a game we should always win or that we are better than them. That has never historically been the case.

Dec 6, 2014, 1:14 PM [ in reply to Re: Bad for Tech ]

One of the pieces for a team to have a great year : Luck.

They were lucky that Watson went down.
They were lucky that Gurley couldn't play and that the Georgia coaching staff is stupid enough to pooch kick at the end of the game with only a 3 pt lead - Richt should be fired.

Otherwise, it would be Duke in the ACCCG.

I hope they continue to keep Johnson around. I believe Dabo will continue to have the best players on the field, and we will be favored in every match up with them.

Well for starters:

First ACC Championship was taken away, due to playing ineligible players.

Backed into the second because Miami was on self imposed probation and UNC was on probation. Had a waver to play in their bowl game that year @ 6-7.

This year benefited from playing us with out Watson or it would be Duke this year.

They beat us on the field, I don't care if BeBe got a $300

sweater, we backed into the OB last year and Duke lost one more ACC game than we did, so don't try to portay them as bad

Again, the were fortunate this year in a few games, that will not be there year in and year out.

They lost to DUKE & UNC, took a last minute score against GA Southern and VT this year, we kill them with Watson.

I don't think we want to play the "could have lost to" game

Dec 6, 2014, 12:37 PM

We should own them every yr. with our talent ,and we totally gave it away this year.
They are getting fewer defensive prospects but seem to overachieve every three years on defense.
As long as PJ has a fast, durable QB who can throw ,he will win 8 games every year.
If they had Smelter tonight, who knows?

Dec 6, 2014, 12:40 PM

with nebraska's history with option football and all. p.j. recruited nationally while at navy, so with neb.'s location (and the lack of home grown d-1 talent in that state), i think that is an obstacle that he could have overcame. just seems like he would have been a natural fit there, imo.

I'm impressed with that observation too. PJ seems like he would be way more of a great hire than Riley. Oh well, Nebraska can't seem to make a right move lately.

Bad.

What people fail to realize...They have about 8 senior starters on Offense that are gone next season...Most of them are their skill players...Tech will be down in the dumps for the next few seasons...

I think you are underestimating the benefit of continuity...

Look at all the Seniors on our Defense and the success they had...

Same applies to Tech's offense...We keep our Offensive studs for 3 years...PJ keeps his 4 to 5 years...

Had Watson not got hurt. Those pick sixes can really make a game one sided when you do it repetitively.

2024 orange level member flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: GT extends Paul Johnson's contract..good or bad for Tigers?

Dec 6, 2014, 5:43 PM

Good for us. If DW doesn't get hurt we beat them easily. That offense is just not that hard to defend if you have good athletes.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

It's neutral for us, is the correct answer.

Dec 7, 2014, 12:22 AM

It's good in that PJ can't recruit. They will always have a medium-low ceiling. They will never win a national championship with PJ as coach. The system is cool and all but there will always be a game where things go awry and they lose. I just don't ever see them ending a season with 0 or 1 loss unless the rest of the conference just goes into the dump.

It's bad for us in that they are a ##### to prepare for and we play them every year since they are our cross division rival.

So overall it is neutral. I feel we would have won if we just get B or better quarterback play in that game. Unfortunately we got D or F play from Stoudt and the defense wore down.

It is absolutely critical that Dabo and Caldwell establish more consistency on the offensive line than we've had previously. We have to be able to run the ball and keep our offense on the field longer if we want to perform better vs teams like GT.
