Question on last hit and score of the game

1

If the left fielder had cleanly scooped the ball would there have been a close call at the plate or would Grice made it easily. Just curious even though it doesn’t matter. Really happy to see our boys playing at a high level again.

Grice would have scored easily. He runs well.***

Even with a good scoop and throw, he's not going to get it home without a relay from another player or a multi-bounce throw which will give anyone on 2nd time to get home. 2nd base is considered scoring position because most hits will allow enough time for a runner to get from there home. I agree 100% on how cool it is to see the Tigers playing great ball at this time of the year.

Runners from second score on a base hit to the outfield a high percentage of the time. But it was a more advantageous area for possibly getting the out.

How aggressive is the coach base running philosophy? Here are the stats for scoring from 2nd base on a single by number of outs:

With no outs, the runner on second base scored on a single 39% of the time. But, when there was 1 out, the baserunner scored 51% of the time. And with 2 outs, that runner scored 76% of the time.

With 2 outs, the running is already moving on contact--the head start helps tremendously.

With no outs, there's almost no reason to even risk getting put out at the plate. Coach is going to hold the runner unless there's a bobble or ricochet off the wall or something.

One out is where the 3B coach is critical.

The left fielder was shifted out of his regular position and had to run farther than normal to get to the ball. So, he may have had a chance otherwise, but because of the shift making a throw to home was pretty much impossible.

But, in that situation, pretty sure Grice was greenlighted all the way anyway, he has good speed on the basepaths, and you have to take the chance to end the game, and WIN the game.

I think Grice scores, but not necessarily easily. He was off and running at the crack of the bat, with two outs. So, no issues with the scoring being a hit and an RBI. With less than two outs, perhaps he is held up at third base, or he slows his turn around the base, and the official scorer has some discretion on whether it was an RBI or not when the leftfielder didn’t field it cleanly.

Already 2 outs and the runner has a good lead and is breaking in contact. The ball was hit hard so it’s possible for a bang bang play at the plate but it would have taken the play of the year by the left fielder.
