Great to see Homer Jordan on the cover at ESPN

Great to see Homer Jordan on the cover at ESPN

I can never get enough stories from that 1981 championship football team. I went to school at the same time. So many great football players/leaders on that team.

Good article. I was a senior during the National Championship season and my fiance, now wife, went down to the Orange Bowl for the game. The 12-hour charter bus trip was long and hard, but worth it in the end.

When the tigers ran onto the field before the game, as is customary, the cheerleaders held the huge Clemson flag on all corners, but then they flipped it over to reveal "#1" and the crowd went wild!! Engleberg Humperdink sang Impossible Dream during halftime -- a song that was all too fitting.

The atmosphere was electrifying during and after the title game. When Homer went out for a play after a hard hit in the second half, the crowd held its breath and then breathed a sigh of relief when he came in on the next play. He came back in, and the rest is history! Clemson National Champions!!

I certainly remember that season ... but regarding Homer, I don't recall hearing anyone call him our "Black Quarterback" ... he was just "Our Quarterback".

Deserving 110%..

Dec 28, 2021, 10:20 AM

and never will forget meeting Homer with coach Curly Hallman during his visit to a Clemson practice while a high school senior..with my 9 yr old Son.

Curly recognized me and said: Bill, Meet Homer Jordan, our future QB who will take us to a National Championship.

I shook his hand and thought to myself how in the world is this slight in-size shy guy with wide eyes gonna do that!

Well oh well, how wrong was this sceptic!

Thx Homer and Go TiGERS!

Hunter Renfrow‘s dad was on the Wofford team that year and was arguably the best player on the field for Wofford as a defensive back. I remember listening to some of the Wofford players after the game say that the 45 to 10 score was merciful. They knew the first time that Perry Tuttle ran a deep route and Homer laid a perfect strike to him that this Clemson team was really good in ways that they did not realize until the game started.
They knew about the athletes on offense and defense. They just didn’t know how fast and precise Homer and Perry could be.

Homer and I at Clemson a few years ago. Great guy. We were the same year at Clemson. I'm so glad to see him get this recognition.
Go Tigers!!!

Amazing that ESPN would give the 1981 Clemson team such a good article. Back in those days, we really were little old Clemson. The national dialogue always included Ohio State versus Michigan, Oklahoma versus Nebraska, Notre Dame versus Southern California.

We loved our college football but we were definitely local regional in coverage. It really took great recruiting and great player leadership with great coaching to rise up and beat the big boys of that day. There were a lot of first round draft picks and future NFL stars on that Nebraska team we beat.
