Open Letter to Dabo (long)

Sep 26, 2021, 5:07 PM

If I were to write a letter to Dabo, it would look something like this. I'm sure some will hate this, but these are my thoughts... they don't have to be yours.

Dabo, I've been a fan and IPTAY member since 1978. During that time, I have contributed just under a half million dollars in donations to IPTAY and to the University. You and I have met a few times. Each occasion, you were kind and friendly. You remembered my name, asked about personal things in my life - like my battle with cancer, my 40+ years in broadcasting and my love of fishing. I'm hoping I've earned a small measure of your trust and the honor of having you read this heartfelt, yet less-than-joyful letter.

Like most Clemson fans, I appreciate all you’ve done to bring Clemson Football to a place of national prominence and consistent championships. You were the man for that job and most believe you still are. You've exceeded our expectations and I'm certain you can take us to higher heights. In fact, you must.

One of your greatest assets is loyalty; to your friends, players, coaches and God. However, that same loyalty now appears to be having a negative return on this program. While your loyalty to players, coaches, friends, and former players is honorable, where is your loyalty to this program's future?

Loyalty involves putting the future of others ahead of your own desires. Loyalty to the future is now more important than loyalty to the past. We are living in a "what have you done today" world. We may agree that Yesterday matters, but yesteryear no longer has as much value. Right or wrong, today's kids and parents are looking at today and tomorrow. And today isn't looking that attractive. Every decision made today is affecting recruits for tomorrow.

No doubt your accomplishments have been impressive. But it is you who always says prior to the season, "this team hasn't won anything. This team has to earn it." Well coach, that applies to you too. You have not earned the right to rest on what brought you here. Those tactics haven't proven anything this year. In fact, they're proving to be a detriment.

Like it or not, the transfer portal is a necessary tool for winning today. Innovative coaches with new and evolving schemes are a requirement. Failure to embrace the necessities of today's competitive environment only ensures our inability to compete in the future.

In your post-game presser, you said "this is where we are right now." Well, coach, "here” is not a good place. We are "here" as a result of not making swift and difficult decisions. Decisions about coaches, players, and methods. What troubles me the most, is where we are today is not a quick jump from where we were the last 5 years. We've gradually seen offensive issues mount over time, yet we've seen no adjustments to address them. Now is not the time to defend your past or plant your flag on the mountain of success. Now is not the time to get back on track, but to create new tracks. Tracks to the future of college football.

The question many of us are asking today is, are you going to continue to be more loyal to your ideals, your past, your personal friends and former players than you are to the future of this program? Many are wondering if you see what the rest of the world sees. It's a bad look, coach. And we're left asking if you can make the swift and significant changes that need to be made. I believe you can. You know you must. We all hope you do.

I'll support and defend you as long as you support positive change. I'll continue to support this University and program regardless. That's what true fans do. That's what I did through the Ken Hatfield and Tommy Bowden eras. Trust me, I write checks without choking these days thanks to you!

If you've made it this far in my rant, I want to thank you for your time and for all you've done for Clemson football. I'm looking forward to watching the evolution of you, your staff and this program, starting now. Here's to hoping change happens quickly, because as you've said every year, this team (and staff) have not earned the right to anything yet. Only you can earn it, coach. We're all pulling for you and believing you can!

Look forward. Act swiftly. Do so unapologetically.

Sincerely,

JHS

WOW great letter Dorean of State wants to smoke his cigar and blow smoke in our faces So do many of the others He is not going to put that cigar down just because we don’t use JC and transfers We are going to be left behind if we don’t open up at least the portal Lane Kiffin said Alabama and the top programs are going to be hard to catch because all the transfers went to leave programs like his and go there

And the only change is going to be to nicely ask Caldwell to retire so we can stop the negative, yet honest, recruiting and get a decent OL. We’ll see if Caldwell understands and loves Clemson more than say Jack Leggett did.

Dabo will never fire TE no matter how bad his scheme, play-calling, and inability to adapt are. The only hope is for him to take a head coaching job somewhere. Which, don’t laugh, is possible if he touts skills learned from Dabo on being a CEO-coach and doing things the right way instead of claiming to be any kind of great offensive mind. There are schools that would love to have the Dabo culture and TE just needs to hire competent coordinators instead of thinking he’s a Ryan Day or Lincoln Riley. Or anywhere close.

Yep, we're with to many hand me down coaches that didn't have coaching experience at another Power 5 school before becoming a position coach for Dabo as a part of his staff.

I could be wrong, but I think that Dabo only has two coaches on his staff that has coached at another Power school before coming to Clemson.

Ok, I checked, and only 3 of Dabo's main on the field coaches has had Power 5 coaching experience, and they are, Brent Venables, Robbie Caldwell, and Mike Reed.

No Power 5 school coaching experience prior to Clemson were,

Tony Elliott, he was a Furman Wide Receivers coach, and he was a SC State Wide Receivers coach.

Todd Bates was a Idaho State (DL) coach, East Central CC, (DL) coach, Jacksonville State (DL) coach.

Mickey Conn was a Bama GA, South Gwinnett High School (assistant), Grayson High School HC.

Lemanski Hall had some years in the NFL.

Brandon Streeter was a Clemson (GA), Liberty (QB) coach, Liberty (OC/QB), Richmond (OC/QB),

Tyler Grisham was a Clemson (2014–2015) short NFL career.

CJ Spiller NFL career, Graduate intern, no real coaching experience at all.

This is our coaching staff to the letter, what you make of it is you own opinion, and you're surely entitled to that!!!!

Compare that to Bama's staff with Bill O'Brian OC and Doug Marrone offensive line, both former NFL head coaches. I didn't look up rest of staff but I assure you they have more experience.

Nepotism is not necessarily a bad thing as long as you get individuals truly qualified to do the job at a high level. I do think this has something to do with the offensive troubles. These young people need high level qualified coaches. I'm not sure some of the hires were best for the team. But at the same time, some of the hires have been excellent.

Fire up that printing press and let's be quick about it... Get that resume rolling.

But on a more serious note........
I do not know the extent of Bresee injury but I pray it is NOT a season ending one. He is playing/fighting for his sister !! For it to be a season ending injury would be devastating.

That possibility hit home for many of us including Coach V. (post game interview)

BV does not seem to be the type of guy that will hang around and watch as his guys fight through exhaustion to the point of injury because of someone's refusal to see what slaps them in the face week after week.

BC is going to chew us up and spit us out while TE continues to do his "evaluating"

Re: Open Letter to Dabo (long)

Sep 27, 2021, 9:49 AM [ in reply to Re: Open Letter to Dabo (long) ]

I tend to agree with you. I will say that hiring one position from outside would alleviate the pressure of Dabo having to terminate friends and that is the position of OC. Let the OC have the reigns to bring in his own staff and with that puts all of the success/blame on a new and fresh OC.

Case in point, I like Tahj as a person but he has no coaching experience and do you really want someone that froze against equal competition to be your QB coach and analyst? We have to cut the anchor that is going to sink the program and that is unbound loyalty.

I think your letter is fine, although I disagree with some of it. We have good enough players here to win at every level ...... certainly against the likes of NC State .... and in the past everyone we have played. I like the loyalty to the players we have, and in my opinion our failures this year have little to do with our personnel, except the offensive line. I don't think you are going to build an offensive line through the portal. I may be wrong. Good offensive linemen are going to play where they are and I don't even think you see very many in the portal.

I was a platoon commander of Marines in a very old (at least now) war. My loyalty was certainly to this country, and still is, and will always be, but in the trenches my loyalty was to my Marines and fellow officers. I didn't think about the grand strategy of our government, but rather the care and safety of my men. I also did not sacrifice the safety of all of my men because one man wasn't holding up his end. I would get rid of them .... if possible. I guess Dabo is in a similar situation and will have to make some tough choices. I hope he can do so without many changes and quite honestly he knows much better than we do what changes will need to be made. He has done it in the past, so let's hope he can get the ship righted!

Re: Open Letter to Dabo (long)

Sep 26, 2021, 6:09 PM

So let me get this straight. You have a coach who in the past 5 years has won two National Championships and played for two more. He lost to a #### good UGA team by one score, and a pretty good NCSU team by one score. So now you are giving him ultimatums? Classic even in today’s bizarre world. Hate to break it to you, before this run you went like 20 straight years without even an ACC title.

Look how far he has brought you and less than one year removed from making the college football playoffs again, you are telling him to shape up and run it your way. Comical.

But I will say this, our football team is not good and I would take what Dabo has done any day of the week. Heck, we had SC fans wanting to get rid of Frank Martin one year after our only final four in history. It’s a sad world to live like that.

If Dabo does this for about 2-3 more years, then write your letter…….but don’t embarrass yourself doing it now.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Open Letter to Dabo (long)

Sep 26, 2021, 6:49 PM

Nah, you don't get it. We heard the hype before the season from Dabo - "great team" etc. If you look at our stats in big games the last few years it is not dominant - just average. We are clearly in a downward trend and have been for quite some time. Our D WAS very good. With 2 DL starters out and with our starting middle LB out at State the D is slightly above average. That's it.

So we have an Offense that goes 2 for 11 on 3rd down. We only converted 2 third downs in an entire game against a mediocre opponent.

When you watch this team each week and see the mistakes and inability for the OC to call a play that gets us five yards, you would have a different take.

4 games into the season and you're asking for quick action? And I think you missed something. Dabo has demonstrated he can make the tough decisions. Remember Rob Spence? He was gone. Billy Napier who replaced him? He was gone when Dabo determined he was not who he needed. Kevin Steele? Dabo put roller skates on him. I don't think you should question Dabo's loyalty to this school or this program. He has shown time after time he can make the tough decisions.

Lol…you started off by saying “If” I wrote a letter to Dabo”…

I read the first paragraph and a couple of lines from the rest so I don’t know how many good points you made or how much of it is ridiculous. I did see where u were attempting to tell him how he should run this program but here’s the bottom line; Grow some ballz…say these things to his face. Don’t just put a make-believe letter on a message board and get some folks to give you some pats on the back. Be a man and tell these things directly to Dabo. Otherwise this letter is garbage and you are full of chit.

Again, I don’t know how much of what u said makes sense or not, but what doesn’t make sense is trying to look like a bada$$ by typing a pretend letter. That’s weak. So I say go for it and let us know what happens.

I would add......

Sep 27, 2021, 12:47 PM

The MAIN issue is Roster Management. Not so much the portal...yes, we should cherry pick the portal from time to time to fill unexpected voids or misses that hurt our chances at winning championships....but I agree with Dabo that your core is built from the HS ranks..it will always be that way. But right now, its a one-way street out of Clemson....you GOT TO have a mechanism to counter that. Dabo doesn't have to go all-in on it.....generally 2-3 a year on average to fill those unexpected voids.

But more importantly........IMHO, is we aren't offering enough people and take too many reaches when we don't meet our targets (See OL unit as prime example). Too often we are way below the 85, which is already a low number when you play 14-15 games a year. Too often we take reaches when we don't hit all our targets when we could've had a higher ranked kid. Offering too late too often too. You see the dire results when we can't substitute since we have little quality depth...or when a few kids get hurt. Not a coach, but IMHO, we should have more quality numbers at OL (I'm not speaking of the gray-shirt, PWO variety--no offense to any current team member) and carry a larger OL group as a whole. See what Sam Pittman does and his thoughts on having multiple centers on the roster..

Keep in mind, these are relatively minor changes...we are recruiting quite well, but Dabo's philosophy needs to be slightly adjusted to fit the times. The OL group has been an issue for a long, long time. Its a HARD position to recruit for...so there's is absolutely NO need to make it harder than it needs to be. I just see alot of self-inflected things based out of pure stubborness....

Re: I would add......

Sep 27, 2021, 1:31 PM

Absolutely, coaches at every P5 school would love to have more scholarships, and we have extra to give to a walk on. Look at the walk on guys on the roster that their names are never call on, and we never see their names in the after game stats, and they're getting a free education. But I guess that do help with Dabo's graduation averages, right!!!

So we’ve had a rough start this year. It may morph into a rough season. While I’m as frustrated as the next person about how our team is playing right now, I’ll leave it to CDS to right the ship. Dabo is the man for the job period! He has shown the ability to fire coaches like rob Spence,Billy Napier & Steele to hire Chad Morris and BV. We have won a lot of big games because of Dabo's aggressive offenses and Defenses. That is what he wants and he has delivered the last 11 years. Funny how just this past summer so many people spoke about what a great job Dabo was doing bringing in Clemson guys to groom and evolve into coaches as others may leave for head coaching jobs etc.. I believe a small percentage of Tiger Nation have forgotten how bad things were pre Dabo. I remember Coach Ford used to say Clemson sold itself, if something ever happened to him we would be okay. Well we saw how that went for 20 years! Thank goodness for Dabo and all he has done for our team, University, city and our state. There is nobody who wants to fix this more than Dabo. He has a proven track record that shows he will.

Disagree. Dabo built this program, Dabo will fix the program. Simmer down, it's college football and it's hard to win. They have gone to 6 playoffs in a row. Think about that 6 in a row. Dabo knows what he is doing. If Clemson goes 7-5 this year everyone should be thankful. Go root for Alabama if you want more. Clemson has a great thing going. Go ahead fan base and run off Dabo then you will see how great you had it. Dreaming of a Peachbowl birth or maybe a chance at a ACC championship game birth.

Re: Open Letter to Dabo (long)

I get your point, but Dabo and his staff did evaluate the transfer portal before the season, but as you'll see in a post someone else made, there was no Offensive lineman worth having. Do you honestly believe that Dabo will just allow losses to happen? We've made changes, but we have also made mistakes. Against BC there were multiple drops by our receivers with the ball touching their hands. I have faith in Dabo, but if we're talking about it on TigerNet, I can almost guarantee you the coaching staff is too. We'll be fine, this coach has earned some grace.

Eh.... I think Dabo knows better than you.***

Every paragraph is predicated on the idea that you're seeing something that Dabo doesn't already know and have a plan for (whether or not to your liking). Despite the accolades this post seems to have received it is borderline insane. It's like you guys want the program to be falling apart so you can all say your were the first to call it out. Do better.

You could have just made it shorter by saying: "Coach, you've done a great job here and you've been the second most successful coach in college football, but you are doing bad this year. I know more than you and I pay your salary, so do better or else..."

Dabo built this program.... period. He's not some dude off the street that has no idea. He didn't get dumber with age. I'd love to hear who is out there that you think would be better at fixing this? Did everyone here forget just how blessed we've been to have Dabo. Have you forgotten that his loyalty and pure caring for players and coaches is what got us here? It's why momma's want their kids to play here over anywhere else. I can promise you that I like Dabo more for his record and accomplishments off the field than what he has done on the field.

I'm flabbergasted at just how spoiled and entitled Clemson fans have gotten. So what if we have a bad year? Oh my gosh... what if we have two? The world will surely end and life as we know it will cease to exist. There is no doubt we have had a few misses or bad luck on players lately and play calling has gotten stale. Those are issues that can be fixed. Every team has to rebuild every once in a while and our entire offense is rebuilding right now.

Seriously though: I fully understand the passion and thoughts in your letter, but I think you have lost sight and appreciation of where "here" actually is. There are probably only about 5 teams in the country that "might" consider trading places with us, and there is only one that has even come close to competing with us over the last 6 or 7 years. This team is having a bad go of it, but the program is still in great shape.

I'd pay good money to see you read that to Dabo in person...

Sincerely,

JHS

lmfao, since you have met dabo why not go ahead and send that letter, or better yet call him on the phone or even better yet than that go to his office and deliver that message personally. smfh. can not see any of those options happening.
