Alabama's last scoring chance breakdown

Props to our defense for shutting down the last Alabama scoring drive.
1 - XT hustles outside bypassing pick to cover RB and get him out of bounds
2 - Kendall Joseph with the solid stick and drive. Wilkins helped hold up some of the pulling linemen
3 - Christian Wilkins beating his guy and making the play
4 - Clelin Ferrell busting through, but Nolan Turner might make the play too. Wilkins or Muse might have even met Tua at goalline depending on how play developed.

Lots of trust in Chad Smith and Nolan Turner playing in the national championship game in a goal line stand. Great player development and understanding the system.

I am not an occupational physical therapist or a sports medicine officianado , but my understanding of " mental fatigue " is when your body has been so beaten and used up that your brain sort of gives up . You see it a lot in the SEC when they lose a football game . It just happens more .

Stop the clip at 5:49, 5:50, and 5:51, and count the number of Tigers in position to make a play vs. the number of 'bamer players. Great coaching and great execution. BV prepared them well for that play.

Is it possible that the 4th down play was actually a pass?

Feb 14, 2019, 7:38 PM

It is true that four or five of our Tigers were in position to stop Tua from reaching the end zone, but look at the replay of that 4th down. It almost looks like three Bama players waded through our guys, heading toward the end zone. It doesn't look like the even tried to block our guys.

Were they hoping to catch a TD pass but Tua had no chance to get it off?

Also, did Simmons tip the pass that AJ turned into a pick 6? The pass went between both Bama receivers. AJ was the only one in position to catch it. Of course, he was the only one looking for the ball! I don't know what the Bama boys were doing, but they weren't looking for the ball.

Excuses are more well recived when backed by video evidence.

The four plays in that series at our goal line was a defining statement to the Bama team and fans that Clemson was in control of the game. That series of downs should be extracted and shone to all high school and college football teams with the caption, "THIS IS HOW TO PLAY DEFENSE".

I still get a big laugh thinking about the Bama fan who was using the "what ifs" to acclaim Alabama a 34 - 30 winner. He also claimed Bama should have won because the Tigers could not stop the Bama offense.
I believe it was apparent to every one at the game and those viewing on TV that the real story line should have read, "The Tigers stopped the Alabama offense and the Alabama defense could not stop the Tiger offense"

The old single wing and Notre Dame Box are dead but in some places stupidity is thriving.

Anyone remember the single wing and Notre Dame Box?

I don't remember the ND Box, but in jr high (early 70's) we ran a scheme based on the single wing. When our FB was healthy it worked well. Without him, converting 3rd and long was nearly impossible.

Sure do, Joe. In the '60s I played strong side TE on a single wing team and loved it (and the ND version).... pure power - just like those 'Bama sweeps. It takes smart, tough players to play D well enough to stop it - and our guys were well-prepared and determined to stuff those runs. It was a D clinic.

Great find....really enjoyed that break down***
