Pretty fascinating how they got back at CBS from when they expanded the last time and how that has driven them, to a point, to what they are doing now.

Most fascinating is that they have a list of schools. This list is the “A-list” that automatically adds money to the pot if they expand. A list of schools that ESPN has agreed would move the needle.

Also, even if you don’t read the entire thing, at least read the last full paragraph. The ACC has an inferior tv contract.

Indeed it was this anger more than anything else that would lead the SEC, a decade later, to spurn CBS’s attempts to extend their deal and move all of its games to ESPN.

The ACC commissioner was John Swofford. It’s not surprising, in fact it should be expected, that the ACC TV deal is inferior.

The list of schools from the ACC has been expanded from Clemson and FSU to include UNC because ESPN needed UNC to make the TV contract changes work.

What CBS did to tick off the SEC reminds me of what the Houston Astros did to Nolan Ryan many years ago. Please note that Ryan is from (and still lives in) Alvin TX which is ~30 miles south of downtown Houston. He's an icon here.

At age 42, Ryan's $1MM/year contract expired and the Astros wanted him to take a pay cut to $800K/year. That ticked him off and he went to pitch 4 more years for the Texas Rangers. He did quite well and threw two more no-hitters. It's one of the biggest mistakes the Astros franchise has ever made. It took a very long time for Ryan to forgive them and allow a relationship with the franchise to resume.

CBS had the SEC and royally blew it! They didn't realize what they had. They also didn't understand the downside of breaking off the relationship.

If their heads were screwed on, CBS could have used the SEC to blow ESPN into smithereens, which would have made me very happy.

Sanky is the smartest guy in the room and he learned from the CBS experience to protect their conference going forward and gain an advantage over the other conferences.

Gotta give him credit.
