Great. Alum, athlete and gentleman passes

May 25, 2019, 8:58 AM

Tigers lost one of the great men of my graduating class this week when Mike Bohonak passed away

Mike was one of a very few who lettered in football basketball and baseball at Clemson Perhaps the only one. I remember him well.’

Frank Gillespie played OG in football, third base in baseball, and guard in basketball in the the 1946-50 period. He lettered in all and double majored in Mechanical and Electrical Engineering with honors , I believe.
In addition he was Vice President of the student body in hie senior year. Phillip Prince, also a football player, was President. After a very successful business career Phil Prince was Acting President after Max Lennon.

There was another football player, Ray Clanton, who was a popular cadet and who engaged in many fun activities such as throwing deserving cadet officers in the reflection pool. He was named as a member of Frank Howard's "All-Time Favorite Team". Coach Howard told the story about President Poole saying to him that he was proud of the players being elected head of the student body, but that Howard should try to get that Clanton boy under control. Coach said, " Dr Poole, Ray Clanton is the reason those boys were elected". Howard ended the story by saying, " And now Clanton is a millionaire auto dealer in Darlington".
