Graphics work in the athletic department

Mar 9, 2022, 11:55 AM

My son will be starting in the Graphics Communications (GC) program this fall. That had me thinking about all the graphic work the athletic department does on social media, etc. My son loves to draw pictures of Detroit Pistons players in action, so it’s kind of in his wheelhouse so to speak. Anyone know if GC majors have an opportunity to intern within the Athletic Department? If so, I thought I have him keep his eyes and ears open for such an opportunity in the future.

Dang congratulations to you and your son. I’m sure you are very proud and rightfully so. Just my 2 cent but I would think that would be very doable. I believe if you want it bad enough you will find a way. Again good luck!

Thanks! That’s our second to follow their dad to Clemson. Our daughter is finishing up her junior year. It took a ton of saving for college for the OOS tuition but they put in the hard work in high school to get the acceptance. When I was at Clemson in the 90’s, I graded assignments for professors and that made me eligible for in-state tuition. I bet they stopped that benefit long ago.

I got accepted in 93 but it did not work out for me unfortunately. Still feels like home as much as I’m down that way. Family lives in Easley, Greenville, Spartanburg areas and was bleeding orange as soon as I was old enough to know what was going on. Hope to move back that way in a few years. I would definitely inquire on things that could possibly be done to get the in state tuition rate. College cost has gotten unreal.

If I had to guess, they are getting free labor from the kids in the graphics curriculum, so if your son got accepted, he could have an opportunity.

. And coming from the director of a CG Animation Studio, unless he is already uber-talented with a pen and paper, sketching basketball players and such, he will want to get into a 3D curriculum, you can actually make a good living. 2D artists end up at Chipotle unless they are willing to starve in New York and Los Angeles, and again, are top-shelf talent.

Matte painters not a thing anymore?

I'm sure the environment HDRIs can do the job, but who makes the more cartoony backdrops?

Yeah, there are Matte painters, but they mostly use a combination of 3D and photography. They are also moving into unreal engine, its technical abilities are insane. There is 2d finish work that goes into them, but you better be a good modeler and digital lighter as well. COncept artists are the only dudes I know that work exclusively in a paint program, and there are only a handful of those talents.

as far as cartoony backdrops, I can not answer that. I would not think there is much money or a reliable future in it.

Graduated from the GC Department in 06 and a lot about the program has changed, as the market for "print media" is continually shrinking the department has done a great job adapting to the digital world. I am sure you may have, but if not, look up the Graphic Communications department at Clemson.edu have your future tiger get in involved in as many of the extra-curricular events offered by the department, real opportunities to build for the future.

I have been lucky enough to make it in the "Ink on Paper" world, but again that market is shrinking everyday. Especially right now when it is very difficult to simply acquire paper. So have your future Tiger explore all media opportunities within this department.

I wish them much future success.

I got my Masters in GC from Clemson ('99). The program is great, but it isn't a fine arts intensive study. They do have many artistic people enter the program, but the focus is on the technical aspects of printing.

With that said, the best advice I can give is to have your son physically walk over to the athletic department and tell them that he is interested in helping with art functions. If he sits around and waits for the opportunity, it will likely never come. He should be prepared to show his work when he goes.

I worked for the AD in grounds maintenance when I was there. When they found out I was a GC student I was asked to do several things for them.

PhotoShop skills will be very helpful, so if you haven't already done so, purchase that program and get him started now.
