Grandpa

This is an oldie I posted about a couple of years ago. I figured it was about time to once again honor old Grandpa. This story was told to me about seven years ago.


This supposedly happened in the 1940's or early 1950's. Grandpa lived with his extended family in the mountains of upper Oconee County. Grandpa got sick and passed away. The funeral home was called and they came to pick up Grandpa. At that time, very few funeral homes had facilities for visitation and the common practice was to return the body back to the home until the day of the funeral. On the day of the funeral, the body was usually moved to the church.

Grandpa never owned a suit during his entire life, always wearing his "Oshcosh By Gosh" overalls. Personnel at the funeral home decided Grandpa needed a suit so he would look real nice when he entered the pearly gates so they went down to a store and bought a suit for Grandpa. After all preparations had been completed, they took Grandpa back to his home in the mountains.

The next day, the funeral home was notified they needed to send someone up to the house to take care of Grandpa. A couple of employees of the funeral home were sent up to the mountains not knowing what to expect. Arriving at the home, they discovered that Grandpa was out of the casket. The family members then told the funeral home employees why Grandpa was out of the casket.

Grandpa's children and grandchildren had never seen him dressed up in a suit. He looked so good they wanted to get some pictures of him and the family members. They took him out of the casket and propped him up in a chair. Grandpa's eyes were closed and they couldn't get them open so they put on a pair of sun glasses. After the picture taking session, they couldn't get Grandpa back in the casket so they had to contact the funeral home to send someone up to help them get him back in the casket.
