Disloyal Assistant Coaches Are Just Like Stepdads

Jan 4, 2022, 9:37 AM

Players and recruits need to realize that just like nobody will ever love them like their real dad, Coach Dabo Swinney is the only coach that will ever truly care about them. Coach Swinney should be the only person they factor into their decision on where to play.

Stepdads come and go, and I promise you they care far more about what mom does for them after their shift is done than they care about you. Assistant coaches are no different. Some of them might know how to teach you to block and tackle just like the cool stepdad that teaches you how to roll your first cigarette. But at the end of the day, when mom gets complacent and gains a few pounds, he’s going to ditch you to become the stepdad for the third baseman on your little league team whose hot mom bakes a mean ziti casserole and just got divorced.

Even worse, some stepdads will take the new Camaro with them and leave you and mom with two months of unpaid rent. Sure, that dad might have taken you to a big party once where you saw your first naked woman, but that memory will fade over time. Only your real dad will show back up and barter his wave runner with the landlord to keep a roof over your head. Coach Swinney will be the only one that’s going to pull a lackluster recruiting effort by disloyal assistant coaches out of the ditch.

I hope these kids think long and hard about how much Coach Swinney will care for them. It’s all that really matters.

Multiple stepdads. Not all we’re terrible, but all eventually moved on. My favorite was the one who taught me how to fish. He was the only one who my mom kicked out. Apparently, he kept getting fired from his jobs for taking me fishing. My mom told me that many years later. It made me feel bad.

I have no stepchildren or real children that I know of…knock on wood! Thought I was going to be a dad once, but that’s a story for another day.

To be honest, it seems like this post is more about you and skeletons you haven't dealt with. It's a long step to equate a professional taking a promotion to men abandoning their family. Sure, Dabo created and promotes a family *atmosphere*. But, if any of those young men are feeling the same emotions as if their dad walked out the door, there is some counseling needed to work our those deeper issues.

You’re just saying that because you don’t know me. I bet if you joined me for a tailgate, you’d be inviting me to Thanksgiving dinner hoping I’d bring some of my homemade moonshine.

I once bought coffee for a lady who yelled at me for not picking up poop from her yard when I was walking a friends dog. She ended up setting me up with her niece. That ended terribly, but I think you get my point.

I love dabo...but Dabo is at Clemson because it's the best opportunity for him and it's best for him and his family....

These assistant coaches do what's best for them and their family.....and the fact yall have issues with that is ridiculous

Coaching football at Clemson isn’t just a “chosen career”. Maybe that’s the case at some factory like Alabama or Iowa State, but Clemson is different. It’s like becoming a priest. You do it for a higher cause and it’s a commitment that should be made for life. Not because you have to, but because you want to.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Priests may not be the best analogy either, ya know

Re: That's about as bad an analogy as I've ever read

Jan 4, 2022, 11:08 AM [ in reply to Re: That's about as bad an analogy as I've ever read ]

What? No.

It is a career, a career with a strong culture but still a career. Heck enough folks here were calling for heads to roll back in September. Any successful program will grow. It is more like cellular fission and evolution. I am 110% fine with coaches growing and evolving from our culture and taking new opportunities. It allows the next group of young -talent to emerge and THAT is healthy.

No gig like this should be made with an expectation "for life". That is Misery.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

LOL, so coaching football at Clemson = being a priest.

Re: That's about as bad an analogy as I've ever read

Leaving Clemson to coach at someplace like Virgina or Oklahoma is not advancement. Years ago, I moved from an edger to blower and finally to riding the mower. Had it not been for a stint on disability, I might have moved up to a white collar job and got to go door to door selling our services. You can advance without leaving.

Assistant coaches never seem to stick around. That’s all I’m saying. Recruits and current players need to stop chasing the shiny penny and focus on what truly matters. It’s right there, front and center, in Coach Dabo Swinney.

Judging by this post and your profile pic, fealty is a positive trait. If a kid is going to spend 85% of their time with their position coach, and 15% in the presence of the head coach, don't you think the position coach is most important for their development? College ball is not the end all for these 4 and 5 star recruits, they have their eyes set on the Nfl. Position coaches are THE most important factor in reaching this goal.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Disloyal Assistant Coaches Are Just Like Stepdads

Jan 4, 2022, 10:15 AM

Your post made more sense after I googled “fealty”. But when I say it made sense, it’s still wrong. If position coaches are more important than the head coach, why does the head coach get the office with the best view and a bigger paycheck?

I realize that you want to come in here strong on your second day on the board and all, but maybe you should sit this one out before you embarrass yourself.

Since my kid played for a Big 5 program, I'll stand by my knowledge of college football staffing and coaches exposure to players. There are 100 kids on the Clemson sideline, do you really think Dabo spends a great deal of time with many of them in a given week? He's recruiting, spending time with the AD, making TV and radio appearances, debating and consulting with his staff, and during the season - watching film on Monday, game planning Tuesday, installing plays and schemes Wed-fri. Sure your not talking about your coaches down in Cootville.
Look, coaches come and go and that applies to Head Coaches as well as assistant coaches, in case you haven't noticed some of the changes just made in the last 2 months.
And there is also no loyalty when it comes to Athletic Directors firing Head Coaches ,even in the middle of a season. Or Athletic Directors moving to greener pastures.
Lincoln Riley, or Brian Kelly ,as the two most highly profile coach this year to make a move, may be no Dabo Swinney, but Dabo Swinney is also not the only man who can coach Clemson if and when the time comes that maybe Alabama comes calling.
