Vietnam - Things you don't think of unless it is you

May 12, 2021, 8:44 AM

We got a new guy in our platoon early in the Summer of'70 - a native Puerto Rican (yes they got drafted too). He was a short, slightly darker than average skin kind of guy who spoke limited English making it hard to communicate with him - certainly a dangerous thing in a battle zone. Once, we set up in a dense wooded area and were told that a 2nd Company was going to meet us and we needed to send someone several hundred yards from our position to meet them on an old road bed that cut through the woods. Our platoon leader selected me and the new guy to go alone, considering the area to be safe since we had just moved through that area. As we came to that road, Carlos (who had been walking in front of me) stopped and gestured for me to step forward and go into the road ahead of him. Seeing that I was somewhat confused, he pointed to his face, hair, and arm to indicate skin tone, and then held his hand up to show his height to let me know that he could be easily mistaken for a native Vietnamese with a weapon by the guys we were supposed to meet. I was glad that he was more aware of the situation than I was.

Vietnam - Thanks for keeping us in touch with that crappy

war. My Brother died over there with only two weeks left flying a chopper on a medivac mission. I have interviewed several Nam vets for the Library of Congress, and shocking stories all the time. Were you around for the "Linebacker" bombing in 1971? I was supposed to be a "cease fire", however Nixon ordered an all out bombing of North Nam. I interviewed a sailor who told me his destroyer went up the North Coast shelling the Coastal Roads during that time, and there were other ships doing the same.

I am sorry that you lost your brother. I can tell you that those young CWO Army chopper pilots were a brave bunch of young men who saved many GI's and Marines lives. I can still see them walking into our Marine Battalion chow hall with their .38 revolvers strapped to their hip looking like high school boys ...... many of which were not long out of high school. They flew missions that other chopper pilots did not want to fly. It was a terrible war, but I promise you that your brother did not die in vain. He is certainly a hero in my book!

Good story

I had a professor at Clemson who used to tell us "youngsters" his tales. Said his group set up an ambush one night in the jungle but they kept getting pelted by rocks, which made a lot of noise. Not good if you are trying to be silent. Eventually they realized they had set up too close to a baboon or monkey colony who were encouraging them to move on by showering them with anything they could throw. They figured the baboons weren't going to relocate, so they did instead.
