Anybody bought a Jeep Gladiator? I'm thinking about...

Mar 24, 2021, 8:50 PM

...trading my 2018 Tacoma for one. Never been happy with the Taco transmission. Seems to constantly be searching for the correct mid-gear and just saps power while doing so. Only way I can truly enjoy driving the Taco is to press the "ETC Power" button which brings higher rpm gear shifting (but worse gas mileage). But that button is not capable of being set by default. Have to press it every time at startup which I find aggravating. Curious on thoughts from anyone that has a Gladiator. Also think that the Gladiator would have easier door entrance and exit that I find too tight in the Taco. Thanks.

my issues with any Jeep product is reliability and cost to own it... as much as I liked the functionality, drive and toughness, I could never get over the reliability issues that were not specific to any one product.

I do not own a gladiator, but I would not buy one brand new and recommend that you review the last ten year history of the Wrangler, which is the platform from which the inspiration of the Gladiator comes from. Again, the reliability and cost of ownership should be as critical in your decision as comfort.

...and have had zero issues with it (besides the frustrating tranny and tight entrance/exit). But that tranny is a problem that I just can't get over. Jeep reliability vs what I have is a concern no doubt.

I bought a Jeep Gladiator about 6 months ago and I like it. However, just like any other vehicles, there are things I would change. Shifting into 4 wheel drive is not as easy as other trucks I have had. I have a Colorado and a Nissan Frontier. Both of those require turning or pushing a button for 4 wheel drive. In the Gladiator, you need to shift into it and it is kind of tight. Also, when you come to a stop, the truck cuts itself off supposedly to save fuel. This is aggravating but there is a button you can push when you start up to avoid this. However, at my age, I need to remember to do that. Also, the doors and roof are detachable. This is not an option as it comes on evert truck. That is what I was told. This leads to an above average noise level from wind. On the positive, there is plenty of room on th einside and it is a good looking truck. Easy access. I enjoy the truck. Hope this helps.

...Gladiator had that and I hate it. Have driven several cars with that "feature" and it is terrible. The Taco doesn't have that thankfully. I'm okay with the manual 4x4 shifter and the noise caused by the detachable body parts. But that is certainly something to consider. Don't want to have to push a button every time I drive it just as I don't like the Taco tranny button. Why don't they make default settings for these "features"? Thanks for that info.

Jeep screwed up getting rid of the I6 4.0. One of the best engines of all time. Think wrangler dropped tnet engine in 06 or 08. After that they’re all garage; off road garbage

Re: Anybody bought a Jeep Gladiator? I'm thinking about...

Mar 24, 2021, 10:59 PM

Bought one in January and love it. Had a Wrangler before, which was more fun and more aggravating at the same time. Switching to 4WD is tight but I don't use it lot, so no biggie to me. Still has a Jeep feel but rides more like a truck. I got the max tow transmission for boat hauling and have been pleased. It guzzles gas but that was no surprise as it is the worst for both worlds for gas economy, a jeep and a truck. Seating and driving comfort is great. Still get jeep waves.

MY confidence in all dropped to near zero. Friends of mine who bought Jeep recently, say they have reliability/quality issues.

I'd recommend you talk with a Toyota dealer to resolve the issues, first, if possible. If not, roll the dice and see what happens.

Per a Toyota mechanic the Tacoma year models 2018 and 2019 were junk. A dealership had to buy back 4 Tacoma’s based on the lemon law and multiple problems with those 2 years. IMO the Tacoma is a great truck. 2018 & 19 were just bad years because Toyota made several new changes to those years. IDK about 2020’s and 21’s. They may be the reliable Truck Toyota normally builds. It only affected the Tacoma in 18’ and 19’.

I was going to buy a 2018 Tacoma until I obtained the above information. After looking around I found a great 4 door 2018 Nissan Frontier 4 door truck. I bought a 2 wheel drive but next time I will get a 4W drive. The back of the Frontier is a little light so a 4W drive IMO would handle much better. It’s a great vehicle though. Going through Sam at First Auto I saved several thousand dollars.

If you want plan on buying one new send me a T-Mail. Going through Sam at First Auto may save you a few thousand dollars. If you want to buy a used low mileage vehicle call Sam at First Auto in Greenville, SC. Sam sales only top quality vehicle’s.

If you find a vehicle you want or would like for Sam to find you the vehicle you want send a me a T-Mail. I will contact you to give you Sam’s information and that you are a friend looking to buy a vehicle He is the most honest car dealer I know. Sam’s phone number is +1 (864) 775-5999 and you can go to his website to see what he has in inventory. If he does not have it in stock he may can find the vehicle you would like. Sam will even give you his opinion on any vehicle you are looking to purchase. Sam and his Son are great guys located just off of Lauren’s Road Greenville, SC.

If you find a new vehicle at a dealership you want to buy contact Sam. If you can without letting the dealership know get the VIN#, and any special features on the vehicle. The VIN# is located on the side of the door jamb about midway down. Sam may can buy the vehicle for you then sale it to you through his business or he may be able to give you the best price the dealer should be able to sale it for.

Call Sam to see if he can get the vehicle for you since he is a dealer. Send me T-Mail or I will give you my contact information so Sam will give you a really great price.

Best of luck to you finding the vehicle you want. If I can help a fellow Tiger I will be glad to do so.

I don’t know if your post is sarcastic or the fact Sam has helped you.

Either way I am trying to help a fellow Clemson fan save money on the purchase of a new or used car if they buy the vehicle through Sam at First Auto.

I could make a couple of hundred dollars if I wanted to but instead of making money of off another Clemson fan I told Sam at First Auto to discount the car another $200.

I am trying to help a friend sale cars and help a Tiger Fan get the car they want and save a great deal of money.

I am not in it for the money I am just trying to help others.

They either love it and it runs great or they absolutely hate it because they're constantly dealing with mechanical problems. The later seems to be the more common response.

Not a lot of in-between.

I bought a Jeep Gladiator Rubicon in December and love it. No problems at all thus far. The bed is not huge but can carry a 4X8 sheet of plywood. It's basically a Jeep wrangler forward of the bed. It rides better on the road than a wrangler d/t longer wheelbase. It will tow 7,000lb, better than most midsizes. And I can take the top off and go off road. Love it.

Yep...owned a couple of Toyota trucks with manuals..

Mar 25, 2021, 10:48 AM

Never had a problem other than clutch replacements. Those aren't as cheap as they used to be, but still way cheaper than auto tranny work.

Manuals make it a little harder to drink your coffee in the morning and interstate traffic gives your left leg a workout. On the plus side, they are a theft deterrent. Young thieves have no clue how to use it.

Now some car makers are making crap manual trannies because they are an afterthought. Do your research.

That is why I passed on the taco when I was shopping in 2018, that transmission sucked and like you said it saps the power. When I was test driving I didn't know about the ETC button but that wouldn't have made a difference. I instead test drove a Tundra and loved it. Tons of power, especially in tow/haul mode, tons of room and so far so good in reliability. I will say the sound system was one of the worst I have ever heard stock before so I ended up changing that out. I love my truck and hope to have it another 7 years at least. By then, the new twin turbo version will have been out for quite a while so any issues with it should be worked out by then when it's time to trade this one in/give to my oldest kid. Good luck in your hunt!

he's quickly learning (the hard way) about Jeep reliability issues and more specifically, transmission and electrical issues. If you're planning on towing anything substantial like a boat or camping trailer, this would not be a good choice.

Tundra or F-150 IMO would be infinitely better choices.

Mar 25, 2021, 4:28 PM

I've owned one since 2006. It currently has well over 150,000 miles and it still runs great. The only real issue is the paint has really started to fade.

That said, if I were in the market for a new truck, while I would likely buy a Tacoma, it would be hard not to look closely at the Ram pickup. Along with its may other great features, that Ram box is a sweet option.

I will say that is a nice feature of Jeeps. It was also on the older Bronco (no clue about the new ones). I will say that with the sun roof open, all four door windows down and the rear cab window fully down on the Tundra. It is about as close to that Jeep feeling you can get while riding down the road. It also lets me hear my Dirty Deeds exhaust better when I am in the mood for it.

Re: Anybody bought a Jeep Gladiator? I'm thinking about...

Mar 26, 2021, 8:28 AM

As for the Taco, the '18 are known to have a very bonkers transmission - it works but yeah, has those behavioral issues. I don't think that is exclusive to Toyota at this point. All of the modern, 8+ speeds have this issue. The worst for me was the 2018/2019 F-150 with both the 2.3 and 3.5 Ecoboosts. The only real solution to have a transmission do what you want now is a manual and those are going dodo.

My suggestion is to look at the Tundra. The larger engine/tranny calms it down and the door access should be better. Because Tacos have some ridiculous resale, sometimes you can slide naturally into a Tundra without too much financial issues.

As a random side-task to my former work, I ran a small government fleet. About 25/30 vehicles, including LE vehicles. Oh, and you would not be able to give me a Chrysler product. Period. Maybe the minivans, those were not complete garbage (likely because their other competitors were ONLY Honda and Toyota)

I had your standard domestic fleet. Fords (Fusion, F150, Transit, Transit Connect, E350, E450, Taurus, Interceptor, Interceptor Ult, were about twice as reliable as Chrysler (which isn't great) and GMs were all over the place. Either great or garbage. Two Impalas of my four (previous gen, early 2010) and the Uplanders I would willing take off a cliff. The Tahoes, Trailblazer, Bolts, and two other Impalas were the best vehicles of the fleet. I also ended up with a few Nissans, not impressed save the Leaf but I wasn't there too much longerto really judge them but they felt cheaper than the Chrysler. Their interiors looked like they had been abused for 10 years in under 6 months.

Even then, the all but one of the other fleet managers in my similar gig drove Toyota save for one Honda driver. I have as Toyota as well.... I can't imagine stepping from a Toyota to a Chrysler if Toyota is what you are used to... and I grew up in New Yorkers, LeBarons, Sebrings, Neons, etc. I grew up in a Chrysler house and I will never look at their lot again.

No, but one was owned by Christopher Walken. It had a weird throttle issue that both flooded and then starved delivery. Fun and funny, something great for Saturday Night, but you didn't want to deal with it as a daily.

Still drives like a dream. They were just called the most reliable I think midsize or something like that as reliability isn’t really an issue any longer. I love it and it pulls my 19.5’ boat with ease.
