ACC Title or State Championship

Jul 18, 2014, 10:04 AM

After Spurrier made note of how USC fans would rather beat Clemson than win the SEC I thought I would ask you guys how you feel. Personally I would much rather win the SEC and lose to Clemson than the other way around.

I realize that after 5 in a row and winning the ACC 2 years ago most of you would say beat USC but keep in mind that winning the ACC this year, especially over Fla St, would put you in the playoff and a shot at the NC.

Obviously I'm not a premium member so I can't start a poll but was just curious how most of you feel.

Jul 18, 2014, 10:37 AM

Well that goes without saying on both sides. I do realize that this is a sensitive subject right now but the war between us will never be over. I do think that we both have fielded very good teams the past few years and both have the potential to have a real good upcoming season as well.

Re: Don't listen to those guys. Most Clemson fans would agree

Jul 18, 2014, 10:47 AM [ in reply to Re: Don't listen to those guys. Most Clemson fans would agree ]

It was a respectful request, and I wish like hell our fans would respond in kind. FWIW, I used to post on FGF asking questions like this and got the same kind of responses. For me, I like the insight of other fan bases. I know there are knowledgeable fans everywhere, and I also know my fellow Clemson fans are extremely biased re. Clemson. I know 'cause I am the same way. So unbiased opinions bring a fresh look to any thread.

TO YOUR QUESTION: It's hard to answer because too many variables exist. For instance, where are both teams at the end of the year? I NEVER EVER want to lose to Carolina, but if given an either/or scenario, I'll take the win over the Gamecocks if it is absolutely necessary to sneak into the playoffs given a 1 point loss to FL ST (knocking us out of the ACC companionship game)and they somehow stumbled their way out of the playoff picture. On the other hand, a 1 point double overtime loss to a very highly ranked Gamecock squad with an undefeated record beforehand and a win in the ACCCG might also sneak us into the playoffs. And all of this would depend on what 120 other teams are doing. Hence, the variables. So, to pick one over the other, ask me again just before the Carolina game. Only then can I be absolutely definitive.

Yeah dont' pay them any attention. Turning 16 and hitting puberty doesn't help matters.

From my perspective, I'd like to see both. An ACC championship and a win over SC. Now if I can't eat my cake and have it to, I'd choose the ACC championship as thats another bit of solid evidence to put in the trophy case for people to remember rather than a moral victory. If we do not win the ACC Champ but take home a win over SC, I'm sure a lot of Clemson fans will not be too disappointed. :)

Serious answer,.....

Jul 18, 2014, 10:34 AM

yes. If we can beat FSU in Tallahassee, then play you guys at 11-0, I'd want to win them both. I would think taking an L during the last week of the season would make it next to impossible to make the 4 team playoff. IMO, we won't get there if we don't win both. Now, I think it much more likely that we beat you guys in DV, than to go into Doak Campbell and beat the stacked defending NC's. That said, I'd rather beat FSU simply because it would give us huge momentum for the rest of the season.....and if we can somehow beat the Criminoles at their place, I have a hard time seeing us losing to Sakerlina. They are defending NC'S for a reason.

Re: Serious answer,.....

Jul 18, 2014, 10:45 AM

I would put the odds pretty even between ya'll beat FSU in Tallahassee and us winning the SEC. I do think that winning @ FSU which would most likely be there only loss, winning the ACC which we are told that winning the conference will mean a lot to the selection committee, while losing to a ranked USC should get you in over FSU.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

If indeed the ACCC was guaranteed a spot in the 4 team

Jul 18, 2014, 10:57 AM

playoff, but alas, they are not. All I know is that a bunch of people will be picking which 4 teams it should be. IMO, in the what have you done for me lately society we live in, a loss just before they're picking the 4 teams would keep us out. I just don't see that happening with a loss in the last week of the season.

Normally I'd say win the ACC, but after 5 in a row and a ACC championship 2 years ago I'd go with a W over the ##### right now. 10 years from now I'd tell you I wished we had won another ACC Championship.

A football program is distinguished by how many Championships it's won. Winning the state title and championships are certainly more fun though.

I realize that the 5 year streak has a huge influence which is why I asked the question. I know that a lot of variables would have to take place for a one or the other scenario to happen but was just curious that if you had to chose one or the other which it would be. Personally I would take winning the conference and a shot at the NC than beating Clemson and if I was asked the same question 5 years ago I would have given you the same answer. Would not choose ACC champ over coot win

Jul 18, 2014, 12:09 PM

ACC champ does us no good if we lose to you. So if I have to assume that the two are mutually exclusive, then I choose coot win.

I prefer both, because that is the only way we get to the real goal - the playoff.

If we can go 11-1 with the 1 loss being a close one to you, and still get into the playoff, I might go with that. MIGHT.

Re: ACC Title or State Championship

Jul 18, 2014, 1:34 PM

Yeah, a lot of Clemson fans are very defensive right now, much in the same way SCar fans were 10 years ago. It's the nature of the beast.

Personally, I would take a win over SCar because in our situation, if we only had 1 loss to FSU (assuming this so that they win the ACC) and then we have wins over UGA and SCar, we would have an outside shot at the playoff depending on where others end up.

Much better to lose early and win late. Plus I'm tired of hearing smacktalk from all my friends that couldn't get into Clemson.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: ACC Title or State Championship

Jul 18, 2014, 1:34 PM

I'm not a native South Carolinian nor have I lived there outside of my 4 years at Clemson, so the rivalry isn't as personal to me as it to many other Tigers fans...however at this point, I'd have to go with beating the Gamecocks.

Since the past two years we've only lost to FSU & South Carolina, I'll have my fun and say in this hypothetical we'll only have one loss this season. Even though giving up the ACC Championship would hurt, I'd still consider it a wildly successful season because it'd wash away 5 years worth of angst & frustration.

I can handle losing to FSU 3 years in a row better than I can handle losing to South Carolina 6 years in a row.

I have never enjoyed it in any sport. It is one of those things where the thrill of victory doesn't compare to the agony of defeat. By the way, I have always felt that way. We are always expected to win, so what have we accomplished in winning.

Re: ACC Title or State Championship

Jul 18, 2014, 2:12 PM

If we were under normal circumstances and sitting here in the off-season enjoying a 3-4 year win streak that included wins like 63-17 and 45-0 I think I would take the ACC championship and the loss to SC. But right now, with a five year losing streak, the SC game takes a higher priority. Enough is enough and it’s time to set things back to normal when it comes to SC. Besides, we ain't getting into the top-4 if we lose that late in the season.

I know that losing the last regular season game most likely drops anyone not named Alabama out of the 4 team running so obviously this scenario is a stretch to say the least. And if it wasn't for the streak I'm sure a lot of you would feel different. This is what made me curious how under the rare circumstance where you had to pick one or the other which would you take and how much the streak influences your decision.

Again, thanks for all the civil responses because I surely didn't come here to stir the pot.

ACC Title is more important

Jul 18, 2014, 4:33 PM

Don't get me wrong, I hate losing to USC, but for the Program winning the conference and getting into a BCS slot is more important.

With the new rules however, I don't think we'll be able to get a top 4 finish even if we went 12-1 after winning the ACC Title Game.

An ACC title over FSU would be huge.

Jul 19, 2014, 6:38 AM

Honestly, a win over SCar is long overdue since some quirk in the universe has taken place lately in the series. But beating the defending national champ and winning the conference would probably put the Tigers in the playoff. That is more important than beating a team that has never won the SEC. Heck, despite our recent losses against SCar, we still have 4 top 25 SEC wins since 2011 to their 2. If we win the ACC, we have most likely beaten FSU, a team that has actually had true success. SCar has not. I say lets put winning the league first.

That said, I believe in the 2014 Tigers. We will not lose to SCar again this year. Go Tigers!!!

Re: ACC Title or State Championship

Jul 20, 2014, 9:09 AM

My answer is situational, not absolute, and comes from the reality that winning any ACC championship brings with it the possibility that the Tigers could be unbeaten when teeing it up with the Gamecocks. Were that the case I would value the win over South Carolina more than the ACC title.

So in general I value the ACC title more but in an undefeated season I value the Gamecock win more.
