Boomer Heaven. TopTen Westerns of all-time:
Nov 23, 2021, 10:13 AM
|
|
Only included movies, so no miniseries (Lonesome Dove).
1. Once Upon a Time in the West 1968 - Charles Bronson's haunting harmonica is heard throughout. The original spaghetti western.
2. The Searchers 1956 - Crazy funny and great story. A clean cut Ken Curtis who played Festus in Gunsmoke.
3. The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly 1966 - Clint's best movie, imo. One of the best music scores ever.
4. Tombstone 1993 - Val Kilmer nails Doc Holiday's Georgia accent. Kurt Russell is the awesome as he's so underrated.
5. The Wild Bunch 1969 - One of the most violent movies in history.
6. The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance 1962 - Lee Marvin as one of the worst villains ever. John Wayne or Jimmy Stewart, who shot him?
7. The Outlaw Josey Wales 1976 - Great historical story.
8. Rio Lobo 1970- Another great historical story with the beautiful Jennifer O'Neill, had originally typed Katherine Ross, get those two mixed up.
9. El Dorado 1966 - A young James Caan as the funny greenhorn Mississippi (You could also list Rio Bravo from 1959, same story and similar characters).
10. The Ox-Bow Incident 1943 - Haunting story where a posse hangs the wrong man.
4 with John Wayne, 2 with Clint, 2 with Henry Fonda
Honorable mention: Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid 1969, Unforgiven 1992, Dances with Wolves 1990, The Magnificent Seven 1960

I just liked Clint more. He was just so edgy in comparison. I liked Jimmy Stewart more than John Wayne for some reason too. My Dad was really into westerns though and so I watched a lot of them. That's all he watched as far as movies. John Wayne was obviously great too. I would need to watch a lot of these old movies again.

I think you have to be over 60 to like John Wayne. My father likes John Wayne, but I just don't get why people think he is so great.

"High Plains Drifter" is my all-time fave. The midget, painting the town red, so many great offbeat things in that movie.
I love "Good, Bad & Ugly" too but it's just such a long movie with too many lingering shots.

1. Once Upon a Time in the West 1968 - never heard of it
2. The Searchers 1956 - great movie. A favorite of my dad.
3. The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly 1966 - Saw it in my 20's. Don't remember liking it too much. We were a John Wayne family. Never watched any Eastwoods. My dad didn't like him... maybe he cussed in the movies? Not really sure why.
4. Tombstone 1993 - I absolutely love this one.
5. The Wild Bunch 1969 - never heard of it
6. The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance 1962 - It's a good one. A favorite of my dad.
7. The Outlaw Josey Wales 1976 - Same as G,B, and U. I've seen it. Don't remember anything about it.
8. Rio Lobo 1970- Good one for sure.
9. El Dorado 1966 - This one and/or Rio Bravo are nearly identical. Two of my alltime faves. WAYNE vs WAYNE Younger sidekick named after a state - Mississippi (James Caan) vs Colorado (Ricky Nelson) Drunkard - Robert Mitchum vs Dean Martin... who literally look the same Goofball - Bull (Author Hunnicutt) vs Stumpy (Walter Brennan) Stupidly hot chick - Charlene Holt/Michelle Carey vs Angie Dickinson
10. The Ox-Bow Incident 1943 - Never heard of it.
Honorable mention:Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid 1969, Unforgiven 1992, Dances with Wolves 1990, The Magnificent Seven 1960
Never seen any of the honorable mention ones either.
We were fond of The Sons of Katie Elder and The Hanging Tree. Also Jeremiah Johnson, although it doesn't really fit as a western.

Just kidding. Good list.
Only "honorable mentions" I would nominate is the Revenant, but not sure if that's Western or Frontier genre.
And maybe Desperado. Only because Selma Hayak is hot as ####. And A MACHINE GUN GUITAR CASE. For serious.

All good choices, but Unforgiven must be #1, followed by Josey Wales #2.
High Plains Drifter is terribly underrated as the Anti-High Noon movie. In one the Sheriff saves the town, in the other the Sheriff destroys the town (or allows it to be destroyed.) That's GD brilliance. There's a point in that movie, and I suppose it's different for everyone, where they go "Wait a minute, ### this town, everybody here is trash. Let 'em burn" That is a great moment of revelation.
I didn't see on the list The Shootist, one of Wayne's best imo, and his last, or African Queen on horseback, Rooster Cogburn. Big Jake, Rio Lobo, just so damm many good ones.

I agree completely. I would rather watch Old Henry or Bone Tomahawk even.
https://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/old_henryOld Henry Old Henry is an action-Western about a widowed farmer and his son who warily take in a mysterious, injured man with a satchel of cash. When a posse of men claiming to be the law come for the money, the farmer must decide whom to trust. Defending against a siege of his homestead, he reveals a talent for gunslinging that surprises everyone, calling his true identity into question.
https://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/bone_tomahawkBone Tomahawk In the Old West, a sheriff (Kurt Russell), his deputy (Richard Jenkins), a gunslinger (Matthew Fox),and a cowboy (Patrick Wilson) embark on a mission to rescue three people from a savage group of cave dwellers.
