Quiting smoking

May 10, 2017, 2:13 AM

Im 26 an i've been smoking for the last 10 years. I smoked my last cig on sunday an im about 2 days in and just now starting to deal with serious cravings an withdrawal. Anyways im just wondering if anyone on here has gone thru quitting smoking before and can give me some advice on how to cope an how bad it can get lol. Any help is appreciated.

The first 2 weeks are the worst. I probably chewed up a whole box of toothpicks during my first 2 weeks. Mental toughness and willpower are key. Just remember that 2 weeks is nothing over the lifetime that you just extended. It's been 12 years for me and not only do I not want to smoke, I can't stand to be around it.

Good luck.

I also went the toothpick route. It also helped me to not be around smokers. I quit right as I left Clemson and got my first job. Being away from my friends who smoked made it easier to not bum one. After that I just needed the will power to not buy any.

Good luck and go Tigers!

You can get nicotine soaked tooth picks on Amazon. Takes care of the oral fixation plus that chemical craving.

I didn't but my father did.

May 10, 2017, 2:27 AM

He chewed regular chewing gum. Lots and lots of chewing gum. He said he just needed something to replace the addiction. As time passed he didn't need the chewing gum either.

One of the many things he's done that make me proud of him.

Everyone is different, but I dipped skoal for 40 freakin' years. I tried to quit ten times or more. Used Chantix, gum, patches, etc. I believe it is physical and chemical. The only thing that worked chemically was a complete break...stop. What got me through it was the physical side. Buy Smokey Mountain Snuff. No tobacco, realistic taste and it completely solved the taste urges. 40 years in....free for 2. Happy and proud. GoTigers!

I smoked three packs a day for 20+ years and was able to quit 22 years ago. I used the patch and just cut it in half about every three days to get through the first two weeks, which as the earlier poster said are the toughest. I hope you make it - Good Luck!

May 10, 2017, 1:06 PM

Smoked 2 packs a day for 20 years. Used the patch to quit the first time. Five years later picked up the habit again. Smoked for 1 1/2 years and quit again using the patch. Been smoke free for 17 years. Don't miss smoking at all. In fact I think I have developed an allergy to cigarette smoke and can't stand to be around it.

Best of luck to you CF3891.

May 10, 2017, 6:06 AM

First, a lot of determination and willpower. Then, tell yourself not to think about next week, or even tomorrow, but just get through this hour, this day- just get to bedtime. As the song says, One day at a time. You can do it, and after a few days, you'll find yourself not thinking about it for stretches of time.
You can do it, my friend. Good luck.

May 10, 2017, 6:21 AM

Keep a list handy of reasons to quit. Google some stats to write down like how much the chance of heart disease decreases in even just one year. When the cravings get bad it really helps to remind yourself what good you are doing for yourself. Like others have said, drink water and have something to distract your mind. Maybe one of those hand spinners or something of the like.

Good luck. Best decision I ever made and believe me, it gets easier and sooner than you might believe.

It is very hard. However I found that it you can get passed the cravings (mine lasted about an hour or so) there was a break. Oral substitutes did not work for me, I.e. sunflower seeds or gum. It just made my craving worse, like my body knew no way this isn't right. Just fight through it. I used to say holy #### when a year later I was still grabbing at my pockets for a dip can. Good luck

I actually quit for a few months and what helped me was just cutting down everyday on the amount you smoke until u can finally quit and the withdrawals wont be as bad. Unfortunately i picked the habit back up after a stressful time a few years ago and want to try to quit for good this time. Keep me updated on the process and hang in there. Just an fyi, ive hard other people have quit by vaping for a few months. Says its alot easier that way and no withdrawals.

Re: Quiting smoking

May 10, 2017, 10:48 AM

Look at a cigarette and ask yourself who's bigger. You or the cigarette? Are you gonna let that little piece of #### run/ruin your life? You have to man up and beat that #### with grit and determination. Keep telling yourself NO! when you start telling yourself stories to get you to smoke. Here's some tips I used to quit (3 packs a day for 10 yrs).

1. Find an audio recording for quitting smoking motivation (listen to it on repeat for hours on end).
2. Chew on straws or gum
3. Willpower is limited, if you have a lot of stress in other areas in life it will drain your willpower. Exercise and meditation can replenish willpower.
4. Get your best reason for quitting on paper. When you get close to smoking write that reason down on paper a hundred times.
5. Accept the fact it is going to be a #####, but know it will get easier with each passing day.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Good luck to you! I am in the process of trying to quit

May 10, 2017, 10:58 AM

using smokeless tobacco. I quit a few years ago for about 6 months and then summertime showed up. I'm using Snus, which supposedly does not have as much nicotine, or carcinogens, but who knows. I know I have cut down a good bit from it. You seriously need to give up the smoking though. My mom was diagnosed a few weeks ago with small cell lung cancer and it ain't no joke. The patch worked pretty good for me the last time, but it is very expensive and when process is over, you still go right back into the cravings. Again, good luck!

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

it may sound corny and obvious, but...

May 10, 2017, 11:09 AM

what it'll take to quit smoking is a spoonful of willpower and some patience.....

I smoked a pack of red Marlboros in the box every day (minimum) for over 20 years.....quit in 1991

It'll take 30 days or so to get over the physical aspect, the psychological will take as long as you let it bother you. If you're serious about stopping smoking and ending the threat of health issues to yourself and those around you---just decide to quit for good and follow through

I don't even think about it anymore and honestly can't stand the smell of those who continue to puff away

Re: Quiting smoking

May 10, 2017, 11:24 AM

As an on and off smoker for 10yrs. Think of this... if you quit and stay smoke free for 8yrs. your lungs will have time to regenerate and heal back to a normal lung functionality. You might even lose some of that tar build up in your lungs. Also, it's just one day, one moment, one second at a time... don't think this is forever... it's just for right now. Find new habits around the times you associated with smoking... like after eating I'm going to stretch for 5 mins. Or go for a walk or go to the gym etc. You must replace habits with habits. "We are creatures of habit..." "We are what we do repeatedly...". - Make a list of what will happen if you start smoking again and nothing changes... then make a list if you're able to keep up this positive growth and stay smoke free -- what will happen then? Also, if you get a craving play it through in your head... this isn't just one cigarette you might have... it's the beginning of another pack or really a another carton of cigarettes... also the detriment to your health, sex and social life. Smoking sucks, literally. Buy some lozenges and be prepared to cough and know you just made the best decision of your life.

You're a Clemson Man, you can do it! You CAN do it! Make Tigernet proud.

As others have said, it might help to take it one minute at a time. Can you resist for one minute? Try to string those minutes together.
Also try to look at it from the vantage point of future-you. Try to put yourself in the place of yourself one month from now and think about how proud you are going to be of yourself that you were able to quit. Try to let yourself from the future make the decision, not the you in the present.
Also, smoking feels good while your smoking that cig (and maybe a little while after), but being a Nonsmoker feels good feels good all day long every day. Keep telling yourself that.
Best of luck. You CAN do it, and you know it!

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

May 11, 2017, 12:39 AM

Try getting some Cigarette sized CINNAMON STICKS!!!!!!!!!!! I quit smoking about 4 years ago when my Wife got pregnant. A Lady told me to try these. It sounded crazy to me but I was having a very tough time quitting so I decided what the heck and gave them a go. You can buy them at most grocery stores and they cost next to nothing. They will look like a Small Cigar and feel like you have a cigarette in your mouth. You can pull on it like you are taking a drag. They have some natural ability to fight off the urges for smoking & nicotine while leaving you with a satisfied feeling and they're not addictive. Good luck and I hope this helps, it did for me.

Well, I guess I'm addicted to nicotine in any form. I was a smiker for only a few years. Instead of cold turkey, I decided to ease on out with these things for a few months.

Five years later I eat 'em like candy. If I go off them for a day, I am a mean sonomabitch.

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I wouldn't recommend this, but for me

May 11, 2017, 1:22 AM

I switched to dip for about 2 months until the "automatic light up" phases eased off. I smoked in my car which was an even harder habit to break cause I always wanted one when driving. Anyway, the dip cured the nicotine cravings obviously and I got to the point a couple of months down the road where I was gonna slip up and bummed a smoke off a friend and I couldn't even stand the smell of lighting it up. At that point, I switched to nicotine gum and a month later, switched to really strong minty gum and altoids. Been nicotine free for about a year now.

Having said all that, there will be those that will snub their nose at the smokeless tobacco route, but that's what worked for me in the long run. I tried quitting maybe a dozen times before with not even a trace of luck, usually going back to smoking in 2-3 days. You have to find your own routine.

Good luck.
