Good deal on a used Xterra
Oct 9, 2019, 8:39 AM

My son's Xterra broke a timing belt yesterday. Getting it checked today, but there is a decent chance that the motor is shot (interference motor).
Anyone want to buy an Xterra that needs a motor?

Assuming your son is high school age.....

Would enjoy you relaying the backstory. Knowing my son, I'm guessing it's something like "Well, it's been making a ticking noise for a couple weeks now, but I just assumed that was the clock in the dashboard getting louder with age, and then I heard a pop from under the hood like a belt breaking, but I only had 7 more miles to my destination and figured I would keep driving and check it out when I got there."

I've driven it a little lately as well. No warning. I "thought" the belt had been changed about 60K miles ago, but couldn't confirm that. We just bought this in August. It was a nice truck... for 2 months.

That's your first problem, buying a Japanese car.

You should do what we did and get him a Land Rover with 200k+ miles on it. It's been a paragon of reliability for over a year now. Yes indeed, if you want to be able to just weld the hood shut and not even worry about it, buy British.

Why are Land Rovers made so poorly?

I've known 2 friends who have had them and it's just one thing after another.
They're really cool looking vehicles. Just makes no sense why they can't figure out how to make a reliable car.

Just helped a friend's son with his Honda....the timing chain tensioner weakened and the chain slipped a couple teeth. Not enough to crash pistons into valves, but enough to make it run like crap.
$800 later they had it fixed. The mileage on the car was enough that it would have needed it's second timing belt replacement, for $250 each.
All kinds of car manufacturers are pooping the bed now with timing chain issues.....bad tensioners, plastic guide rails that break and circulate plastic throughout the engine---Audi, Jaguar, etc.

It depends on how compact that space is. Some cars require a lot of disassembly to get access to the belt and pulleys.
I had a high-mileage van with a V6 that needed new spark plugs. Simple replacement, right?. To access the rear 3 spark plugs, the entire lower windshield assembly (wipers, etc) had to be removed. Total PITA!

Different part, but similar issue

The old 6.4 liter diesel in the Ford F250/F350 would pretty regularly go through injectors. And head gaskets. Not a big deal, right?
Except the body had to be removed to get to both of them.

$250 each. More like $700-$1000.
They are testing his motor now, and IF it appears to not be damaged, the timing belt job (includes new water pump) will be $680. And that is lower than most estimates I've seen for this vehicle.

They're probably doing the cam seals too.

Take off the water pump and those seals, and the cost of the belt alone should be about $300-350 of that total.
Like someone else said, unless your car has a super tight engine bay (which an Xterra doesn't), a timing belt change is 1-2 hours labor and a $30-50 belt.

On my 4runner v8, it was $900 in Anderson.

$1500 in CHS.
That included the timing belt, water pump, tensioners, cam seals, oil and antifreeze change.

Speaking of the Office

Andy: You meet a lot of ladies driving an Xterra, because you pull up to a stoplight, and look over and there's an Xterra next to you. They're always driven by chicks, so there's your icebreaker.
Andy Bernard: I saw your dork-mobile in the parking lot. What's it get? Like four miles to the gallon? Dwight Schrute: Uh, try double that. Classic Trans Am Vintage American muscle. Andy Bernard: Uh huh yeah my Xterra's pretty sweet. Luxurious yet rugged. Leave it to the Japanese. Dwight Schrute: Xterra's not even a real word. Andy Bernard: Actually it is. It's Latin for Earth. Dwight Schrute: Oh, so you drive an ex-Earth? Andy Bernard: Yeah. Dwight Schrute: That makes sense. I'd rather drive a classic Trans Am than an ex-Earth. Andy Bernard: Yeah. I bet you would.
Dwight Schrute: This car is crap. I will buy it for next to nothing. Andy: How next to? Dwight Schrute: Well, here are your options: You can sell it for parts, drive it off a cliff, you can donate it to a person who you'd like to see die in a car crash, or you can sell it to me and I'll use it as I would a wagon on my farm. It will be towed by a donkey. Andy: I have to pick one of those? Dwight Schrute: Yes. Andy: Can you go over those options again?
