Going back and watching the UT OU game

Dec 21, 2015, 8:45 PM

Jaylen Heard had a pretty strong showing against OU. Dobbs did as well. I think these two are the closest comparisons to DW4 and Wayne.

UT got comfortable in that game. They did sort of the same thing Clemson did against ND, got up early, physically beating them and thought the game was over. Give OU credit though, they came back and found a way to win.

UT lost all momentum during that game. They got up quick, had a massive crowd behind them and had everything going there way. UT tried to run the same plays and just hoped for first downs and let OU bring 8 in the box, stop the run and take momentum. I hope once we get up, we leave the pedal down and put up 50.

Back to Heard. If you watch the way he runs, it's a lot of the same style and moves as Gallman, no moves. Run straight ahead and make then tackle you. Make them do it over and over again. I believe Heard is a little bit bigger than Gallman, but both run extremely hard. I believe if Clemson establishes the power run, Deshaun will also have a big day on the ground.

OU was tired of hitting Heard. They were getting beat, they were having to tackle 6'3 230 over and over. Then Dobbs started to pull it and pick up yards.

My point, I believe Watson is a major factor in the run game (which is no surprise). If The Big Boys can win their match up enough in the beginning and let Wayne run head up with those LB and DB's, I believe Clemson puts the game away. Watson has critical runs on 3rd downs that are triggered by fakes to a productive Gallman.

I think I'm over thinking this game. Let me go watch some more games

If you watched the game you would have noticed that OU adjusted to the option run. He opened the 2nd half with a 31 yd run but after that probably gained no more than 25 yds the rest of the way. Two things stood out from that game. OU wore them down playing from behind and Tennessee made no adjustments and OU did. In that game Mayfield threw 2 of his 5 ints for the season. One pass came off the hands of his receiver, and the other was misread, not sure if was the receiver or Mayfield. When all is said and done OU kept them 170 yd/s under their season average in double overtime.

OU made adjustments, UT didn't. Like I said, in the beginning, UT wore OU down with the same plays but thought their lead was enough and it wasn't. OU stacked the box, and Dobbs couldn't beat you. Watson might can.

OU wearing UT down is not something that I noticed from the game.

If you watched that game you saw a mediocre team get up big on OU , and then nearly beat them .
Vols are on par with Va Tech , pretty good talent with minimally positive results from it . UT couldn't match up with Clemson right now , and to almost lose to them is nothing to brag about . They're horrible.

the key to our victory will be establishing the pass first.

Dec 21, 2015, 9:27 PM

we had way too many second and longs against unc when we ran the ball incessantly on first downs. Too predictable. Need to mix it up. When we do run it, it needs to be d4 as much as gallman.

It almost seems that we try to run clock, instead of trying to score points. When will we learn that if we score enough points, we will beat the stuffings out of everybody. When we back off the pace, it lets them catch up. We just need to keep pouring it on. We do that, and we stomp opponents.

it was to protect a beat up defense that was giving up too

Dec 21, 2015, 10:10 PM

many big plays. Actually makes sense.

It was a tired defense. They played off of adrenaline the whole game it felt to me. They will be well rested for this game so there is no excuses. This is your last game. I think the pressure of being undefeated got to them. They played timid as the game went on, like they were trying NOT to lose instead of just winning. This is game is like the last game. You play until the clock strikes 0:00. If you are lucky enough to play the next one then so be it, but this is your national title game. If not you go home 13-1.

By running 3 straight plays in to the centers ### and punt? I think the times we backed off were to protect the lead and prevent against mistakes that put the other team back in the game. Not to save the defense. If anything defense was being used as a crutch.

Defense was beat up, but there's not one team in the country that isn't beat up at this point.

It does if it works. It hasn't. Every time we've tried it, they have scored, and we have looked really bad while they did it.

I don't think we've out the pedal down like we did with CM much all season. We were beat up on def, the players talked about it after the last game.

To me the tale of that game was the OC not trusting Dodd with the ball on plays that OU's defense was gearing to stop the run. They tried to beat them with the option game take the air out of the ball and OU's D is good enough to keep that from happening. UT's defense played very well sideline to sideline to make OU beat them straight up and Oklahoma had a very hard time doing it. Even OU's two regulation TD's were hotly contested. Bottom line Watson >>> Dodd. If OU scores 3 through three quarters they are toast.

One key will be to not give up on the run if we are not

Dec 22, 2015, 9:53 AM

having big success in the first half. Against UNC, Gallman has something like 30 or 40 yards in the first half but about 130 in the second. I think the improvement in our offense under Scott and Elliot is that we do not give up on the running game too early. I think Oklahoma will do the same thing and continue to pound Perine throughout the game.

Exact same thing we did against Notre Dame. We had three

Dec 22, 2015, 9:56 AM

possessions late in the game where we just sat on it. It worked. But, we could have blown Notre Dame out.
