God Bless Millennials

Jan 14, 2020, 4:10 PM

Yesterday, millennial employee resigned. Offered to work his 2 weeks with 1/24 being his last day. We accepted.

Today, he sends a PTO request for 1/22, 1/23 & 1/24.

Double U Tee Eff.

You want time off? Today is your last day. Have a nice life.

Jan 14, 2020, 4:13 PM

25 to 40 years old who's trying to game the system?

That's crazy.

He’s not gaming the system. In GA you have to pay left over PTO.

He’s not getting any extra money. He just lost an extra weeks wages by leaving today. Now he has a week unpaid between jobs.

Gotcha

Jan 14, 2020, 5:29 PM

So if you have to pay it out anyway, what does it matter if he uses?

Just principle, I'm assuming?

Saying you’ll work through the 24th then asking to work less.

He resigned yesterday so technically he’s now employed at our discretion.

That's the best week ever though, so good for him.

Always schedule a few weeks between jobs if you can do it financially and the new company you're going to is okay with it.

Not sure how it works in your state

Jan 14, 2020, 6:00 PM

But if you fire the guy, don't you have to pay severance?

Please forgive me, @IneligibleUser

No law requires an employer to pay severance pay***

when i did this stuff years ago

Jan 14, 2020, 6:11 PM [ in reply to Not sure how it works in your state ]

in va you didn't have to give vacation pay
it was a benefit not a right
but hiring is a competitive business
if you don't do the right thing word gets around

badge-donor-20yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Our company got out of teh whole "paying vacation"

Jan 14, 2020, 6:36 PM

buy giving us "unlimited PTO". It's a new "benefit".

But you still have to schedule it, and they'd really rather have you not take more than 3 weeks a year.

What it really means is that I now get less PTO than I used to, and if they fire me, they don't have to pay me anything.

Re: Our company got out of teh whole "paying vacation"

Jan 14, 2020, 10:40 PM

Yep, my employer did the same thing. Exempt employees now have "unlimited vacation". I've been with them for 30 years. But, my hire date had me maxing out at five weeks vacation. Now, with the new "unlimited vacation" I'm screwing them every year taking 6 weeks off! Ha! Su-ck it, big brother!

How about work hard and do the right thing and it won’t matter. If you are worth your wages, they won’t care when you take time off. If you aren’t worth your wage, well, you don’t deserve the time off.

Jan 15, 2020, 11:00 AM

Some companies want you to use up your PTO in your last 2 weeks so they don't have to pay it out. Some want you to work. I don't see a problem here other than the fact he is losing money. Maybe he just wants an extended vacation.
