Glock 19 or M&P .40?

Mar 4, 2015, 12:30 PM

Trying to decide between these two guns.

Anyone shoot both?

What is the difference of recoil between the two?

9mm vs .40?

Thanks!

As a general rule of thumb, the heavier weapon

will have less recoil. Ergonomics can make some difference in felt recoil. I have not fired either, so I really don't know. The sweetest semi I have fired, and I own one, is the 9mm 92F.

YOU need to go shoot both and make the choice.

The way one feels in your hand will differ from the way it feels in mine. Both are excellent manufacturers, just depends on personal preference and features. If you're going to spend some time and money at the range, get a 9mm...cheaper ammo target and more options as far as self-defense rounds. Don't get sucked into the 'stopping power' debate, unless you are consistently defensing against people Angel Dust. Nothing wrong with a .40, but there's no great difference to a practiced shooter defensively, but there is a great difference in cost to shoot.

If you're going to buy it and stick it in a drawer beside the bed and never practice with it, then do yourself a favor and get an aluminum baseball bat for protection. It will save you money and keep you from shooting your eye out in the middle of the night when you think you hear something.

Good advice.

I plan on practicing. I'm hoping to get something my wife and I can both shoot.

I'm thinking the .40 maybe too much for her.

I didn't know if the 9mm had significant less recoil.

ditto what RH said

If you're getting a gun your wife will shoot, I highly recommend a heavy 9mm in this class. You just have to shoot them. Perceived recoil is different for everyone. Might even look at the G17 since it's a little bigger.

With today's SD ammo and $'s, I have no use for a .40 if 9mm is an option. More capacity too. my $.02.

Sorry, I missed your 2nd question. 40 S&W

has a sharper recoil than 9mm. The Colt 45 has a reputation for hard recoil, but that isn't my experience. The weapon is relatively heavy, and the recoil isn't that much.

The Beretta 92F was designed around the 9mm cartridge. It is extremely reliable. I have never experienced a jam. When you pull the trigger, the muzzles flips up a bit, but the ergonomics are such that it naturally comes back on target. Frankly, I don't even feel a recoil. Yeah, it explodes in your hand, but the feel of recoil is just not there. If you are looking to carry, it is a big weapon. If you are looking to have fun at the range, buy relatively inexpensive ammo, and have a weapon around the house, it is good for that.

I have to think about this one. I would love to shoot it.

Check with local indoor ranges that rent weapons. You

can try a variety. You never said if you had a specific purpose. For purely defensive use, in the car or the home, it is hard to beat a wheel gun. Years ago I bought a S&W Bodyguard in stainless steel with Pachmeyer grips. I keep it in a small ballistic nylon zippered pouch, along with two speed loaders. Now they have many hammerless varieties from which to choose. Just aim and fire. Under stress, it's harder than it looks.

Just shot a few, but 40's seem to have more recoil

than other guns I have shot/own.

Re: Glock 19 or M&P .40?

Mar 4, 2015, 1:55 PM

I have an M&P 9mm. It is a good gun. My wife doesn't have any trouble shooting it and she isn't really into guns. It comes with three different grips you can easily attach depending on how large your hands are. I've never had a jam. If you decide to get an M&P Compact later, the magazines are interchangeable.

I can't speak for the Glock, as I've never shot one.

Do you have the full size?***

Re: Do you have the full size?***

Mar 5, 2015, 10:59 AM

Yeah, I have the full size. A good friend of mine has the compact, and I have shot it a few times. My hands are probably larger than average, and my pinkie finger won't fit on the grip if the smaller magazine is used in the compact. Both shoot pretty good though. I have the night sights on mine. I'm not sure how much more expensive it is to get those put in, but they make shooting at night fairly easy.

I also have a Streamlight TLR-1 light attached. It is really easy to use and shoot with. I think you can pick one up for around $100.

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I have the same M&P

Mar 5, 2015, 11:25 AM

really like it overall but I don't like how the casings eject

Why settle for less?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

That's technically a rifle, so adding that parameter means

I'm getting at least the H&K 416 variant. A little more distance and accuracy with the same H&K reputation for being indestructible and low maintenance.
