So our biggest problem is recruiting (basketball)

Mar 13, 2022, 8:41 AM

I ask one question. Name a coach who mid-tenure went from sub-par recruiting to punching above weight recruiting. I can’t name one. It may take time to build a program but the ability to recruit should be evident at the start.

Brownell says we have to recruit better. He’s right, but that requires a fresh start. I even think Brownell could be a successful at a new school where he could come in and generate excitement. For Clemson, he’s stale and it’s a result of 12 years of no progression. He may be an improved recruiter or an even better Xs and Os coach than when we went to the Sweet 16, but I don’t see how he builds a top 25 program at Clemson since he’s 12 years in.

We can hire somebody that fares much worse, but we need to roll the dice. Mike Young is a good coach but I don’t know how much better he is than Brownell. He did however start off strong at VT and that will set him up for success these next few years. Brownell started off poorly and I think that hurts both him and Clemson today.

Va Tech team is mostly transfers including a kid or two he brought from Wofford.

Either he is better at identifying talent, better at developing talent, or better at closing the deal with talent.

Given Mr. Brownell's History At Clemson

I would say all three.

Agree….all 3. Plus better x’s and o’s and winning close games.

Class of ‘71. Went through “rat season” and glad I did.

Yeah Young is a lot better at all of that. Trust me it is more than just recruiting. Any fool could see that. I really think Neff does, but he is cut off by the BOT in his first year.

I've felt Brownell has recruited well here over his years,

including incoming transfers. With a few exceptions, each season seems to have a winnable bunch. It seems like we have a lot transfer out though, but it's hard to say how expected or normal that is now. It does speak something to development I guess. Brad's worst problem with breaking through on recruiting though is a problem of his own making - he doesn't win enough consistently and create a buzz around him. It just makes the job that much harder.

I never like to hear a head coach say much about 'recruiting better.' Like, name the kids you wish you had better versions of? Same goes for a lot of the folks that complain about a lack of resources keeping us back. Brad has done well enough putting a competitive team on the court. Resources don't explain away issues with closing out winnable games.
