GITT with the worse boss you've ever had
Jun 9, 2021, 9:23 AM
|
|
Had a guy who loved running people off. Took it as a game. Begged me to identify somebody for him to make their work life a living #### so he could get them to leave. Bragged about having a 15% turnover rate every year.
I knew my time was coming soon when it would be my back with the bullseye on it. So I jumped at another job that was a step down the ladder but same pay and better situation.
Cue meetings with boss. He WRITES MY RESIGNATION LETTER FOR ME claiming I felt incompetent for the job etc. THEN DEMANDS I SIGN IT OR I WOULD NOT BE ALLOWED OUT OF MY CONTRACT AND HE WOULD MAKE THE NEXT YEAR THE WORSE YEAR OF MY LIFE. So what does idiot me do? I sign it.
Then the next morning, I type up my actual resignation letter (he hasn't sent the one he wrote for me to HR yet) and send it to HR before he can.
HOLY ####
I recorded the next meeting I had with him in which I've never been berated that hard in my entire life. I've had some ass-chewings before. This one was on another level so high it could have touched the international space station.
I was told to leave and not have any contact with ANYBODY and to never come back and he would THINK about letting me out of my contract (if I'm not allowed back how are you not going to let me out of my contract?)
He sent in the first resignation letter he signed to HR and cc'd me in it. An hour later he was "removed" and given a "promotion" to get him out of the building.
That year aged me 10 years and I still have flashbacks to that time period (happened around this time of year).
One thing I've learned from it.
1. Look out for yourself because your job won't.
2. When EVERYBODY says somebody is an ### hole, believe them.
And that's not even the boss who threated to sue me for slander.

2nd worse: Guy who threatened to sue me for slander
Jun 9, 2021, 9:34 AM
|
|
first job right out of college.
Dude was a total ### hole. Berated staff constantly etc. You know the type.
Calls me into his office one day and tells me I need to get on board with what he was doing (pretty much ensure all students pass so his scores would look really good) because he was going to be superintendent one day and he would hate to make my life a living hell when he got there.
Apparently he told a bunch of teachers this because an anonymous letter got sent to the superintendent referencing that statement and many other instances of harassment.
He calls me in (finds out later he did this to everybody he had that on-board meeting with) and threatened to sue me for slander (libel?). Told him I didn't send it and I didn't know who did (I didn't send it but I knew who did).
That year he had an 88% turnover rate. All but 3 teachers in the entire school resigned.
The "promoted" him to the DO then fired him a couple of weeks later.
Last I heard he was a middle school teacher in Columbia.

no idea what he was doing. Former football player who was briefly in the NFL. I suspect he'd got through school having others do his work. He was paying a college student (former intern) to write code his code for him. He attempted to get me fired claiming I was clueless, when in reality he was worried that I'd expose him. Luckily his incompetence exposed itself when he went after me. He was given a recommendation for a better job elsewhere making more money. I just Googled him and apparently he's now a Cyber Security Project Manager. So his company is ######.

I bartended long ago for a big fat drunk idiot. He liked to get drunk and start fights with employees. Finally came at me one day. I bloodied his face with a few elbows, he messed up my shoulder a bit. It was a draw. We parted ways.

The only bar I've ever been thrown out of was because I got
Jun 9, 2021, 9:53 AM

into a fist fight with my ex-boss. He was suing me over a non-compete clause, and we both knew it was BS.
I used to go to Captain Harry's bar downtown quite a bit, and ran into my old bosses fatass one night there. My smartass knob was already turned up to "extreme high" that night and some words were exchanged, he was drunk, and took a swing at me. I countered back, and about that time two bouncers were shuffling us both out the door.
I never heard anything else about the lawsuit. Not because of the kerfuffle, but because me, him, and his lawyer all knew how hard a non-compete is to enforce, and I'm pretty sure his lawyer told him to drop it before it backfired on him. Judges don't take kindly to attempting keep someone from working due to a personal vendetta, and at that point in my life I had absolutely zero to lose. There were no damages to his company by me, and even if he did win something, good luck getting any money in SC from a 25 year old with a motorcycle paid for on his credit card.
That night on the way out the door they told me I was banned from the bar, but I went back a few weeks later and no one even remembered it. A few years later I saw him at Poe's at the bar inside and he must have gained 30 lbs and looked like chit. I had heard he had gotten divorced, lost his kids and everything else to his wife and also got kicked out of the business he started by the investors in the company. He looked at me, didn't say a word or acknowledge me, and I looked up a few minutes later and he was gone.
I heard a couple years ago that he had a heart attack and died. No idea if that was true, but who cares. Eff him.

I returned the next day (Saturday) to pick up a piece of office furniture and left my key on the table. I never went back.

I think it's comedy. Like implying you said it is funny to me, but I don't really think you said it. Ever since you've gotten fabulously wealthy, you've gotten very sensitive, and I am sorry if I was offensive with my slightly barbed comedy attempts. I sometimes forget I'm no longer talking to the man of the people that you once were.

Interesting question. Its seems to me that bosses fall into
Jun 9, 2021, 10:05 AM
|
|
two categories: A. Those who get their internal worth from the people below them (how well those under them do). B. Those who get their worth from the people above them (how well they are perceived).
Most are in the B category, and while they have different ways of going about it, all of them will eventually make you equally miserable.
The worst one was my most recent. He consistently manipulated circumstances and communication such that those under him were support for his advancement, and the dumping ground for anything negative and all mistakes, including mistakes under no one's control. My best was the immediately preceding, who consistently went to the back of the line when praise was being given, and went to the front when mistakes were illuminated.

best bosses I've ever had were on that call with me. One was my current boss, and the other was my previous boss at the same company.
Both genuinely care about their employees, stand up for them, and want to see them succeed. Both have told me that when they see people that work for them move on and better themselves either at this company or somewhere else, it makes them feel better about themselves.

My dad was a mid level exec in a Fortune 500, maybe one step
Jun 9, 2021, 10:26 AM

down from VP (of which there were many). Maybe "Manager" is what they called that level. Good salary, not going to get rich. We went to one GT football game every year, always staying an extra day in the hotel. As I got a little older, maybe 5th grade, it occurred to me to axe why we stayed until Monday afternoon. He said he hired one new person in his dept every year, so once a year he asked the Dept head at GT to set up interviews with the two top graduating students, the interviews taking place the Monday after a game. He said he would pick one of the two and pay whatever it took to get him. "My goal is to know that one day, no matter where I go in the company, I'll have to report to one of them."
I was maybe not the best employee in the world, because while I might never have been that good of a boss I expected all mine to be.

Hire someone competent enough that you could envision a scenario where you could be working for them, and personable enough that you would be ok with such a scenario.
Short version....hire people better than yourself.

15% turnover? You tell that guy he's a real light weight
Jun 9, 2021, 10:08 AM
|
|
Worst guy I ever worked for came across his desk (lulz) at me and screamed at me that I was a #### liar when I told him I had not released a schedule early. He in fact had left a paper copy of the schedule on the table in the breakroom and people were coming in to ##### about their assignments. I walked out on him and went to my office to decide if I should start packing or just leave. 5 minutes later he was at my door apologizing.
I called the big boss and he told me to hang on, this guy wouldn't be there long - he was there for 2 years and had around a 25% annual turnover rate
My wife worked for a guy that bragged about a 30% turnover rate. Only way to get the right people was to weed out the bad ones he'd say. I guess nobody above him figured out he was either a #### or bad at hiring because he stayed there 20 years.

that's why I had to jump on the opportunity when it presented itself. I'm the shortest tenure here. Everybody else has been here more than 5 years. I was here for 4 years, left for that job for 3 years then came back.
Nobody ever leaves anymore because it's such a great environment.
I'm going to have to make a tough decision next year though once I'm done with this master's program. Do I leave for a shittier environment but way more pay or do I wait around here for a position to open?

They would rate everyone as a H-M-L, and start firing the "lows" and "mediums" at 15-30% per year.
Being that both companies are a shell of their former selves, so you can see that classical management theory is bullchit.
Well, that, and generally having terrible management (I'm looking directly at you, Carly Fiorina)

the rest were idiots. Dan Malone and Tommy Banks were the only intelligent people I worked for in my entire life. I had a few good foremen at Combustion Engineering back in the 1970's but I was too young back then to know if they were good people or not.
Malone might have graduated high school and Banks was a Citadel grad.

I almost bought a Benz limo a few years back. It had the 5 cyl diesel in it. If I lived in a place where having a dozen cars was practical and the V12 was not at the other end of the country I might have given consideration to buying it.

Reading thru this thread made me realize how lucky I was

working in a professional firm environment where everyone's success meant everyone was better off - teamwork was required to get things done.
The sad news is most people become managers and never get any management training - they might be good at what they do, but they are not good at managing people to do what they do.

Take a guy who got one promotion too many and stir in a few yesmen. That's corporate america. I graduated from Clemson and went almost straight back into the field where I worked with my hands.

mad at the people above me but that was usually due to internal politics that I was not privy to.
My first boss out of school was possibly a silent partner on a development deal that he would move my time off of and ask me to charge other projects while still working on that. He is no longer there anymore, but he got let go after I left. I have no idea if anyone ever found out and he was let go for that or due to the economy just stinking.

I had a jerk of a boss who possibly had Aspergers
Jun 9, 2021, 1:36 PM
|
|
he missed all the social cues.
He stopped by the delivery room when I was in labor with my first kid and asked my husband if it was a good time to stop in and say hello.
I never went back to work for him after that, for lots of reasons.
