Plan to start using credit card to charge everything during the month and then pay it off to earn points or miles or whatever, and will use to up my travel game for flights/hotels/etc.

We use Venture for that reason

haven't really compared much as far as rewards, but they are pretty on top of things notifying us about suspect charges

We buy a lot of stuff off Amazon

Jun 21, 2018, 4:11 PM

So we use the Prime Visa for everything and then get more useless stuff off Amazon for “free”

That's mine since I don't really do much flying or hotel stays***

I got the Cap One Venture card when it had the 50,000 miles

Jun 21, 2018, 6:02 PM

bonus a couple years ago, but it was for a specific purpose. Knew I was making a trip out west and wanted the $500 for airfare. Overall though, the Citi Double Cash is hard to beat, 2% cash back on everything wirhout restrictions.

A drunk will run a STOP sign, but a stoner will wait for it to turn green.

Have one for biz and one for personal.

I have a few, but by far our most used is the Costco card.

Jun 22, 2018, 8:55 AM

4% cash back on gas, 3% on restaurants and travel, 2% on everything else from costco, 1% on everything else.

We're not earning miles or points, but dollar for dollar 3% back on travel is better than some miles cards.

Our second most used card is discover for it's rotating 5% cash back every quarter. it's been groceries this quarter and starting in July is restaurants. Usually q4 is amazon which is perfect for Christmas shopping.

ROH

Marriott rewards card (Chase)

Best bang for the buck. Annual fee is $80 - but you automatically get a free night stay every year when you renew.

One year of moderate family type use should get you enough points to stay 7-10 nights at a Category 5 (~$140 night) hotel.

When deciding between Sky Miles, and Hotel rewards cards I came to the conclusion that the Sky Miles don't get you very far, and I don't always fly when I travel but I almost always could use a free place to stay.

The road goes on forever and the party never ends...

Again, Citi Double Cash Card

Jun 22, 2018, 10:28 AM

1. Round up all your bills & Add up the total
2. Divide the total by 2.
3. Open a second bank account & set up direct deposit from each paycheck to be the number from step 2 +15% (to account for variability in things like your electric bill)
4. Set all your bills on auto pay from your credit card.
5. Set credit card to auto pay from the new bank account.
6. Get 2% of all your bills back in cash back.

If you're getting paid bi-weekly, this will give you 6 months' worth of expenses saved up in under 3 years. If you get paid semi-monthly, you'll have about 3 months' worth.

Still, the 2% cash back is better than the value of the travel rewards, and if you want to use the account's proceeds to pay for your travel, you'll end up much better off.
