One case is a current player giving gifts to his teammates. The other is a "fan" giving gifts to players to entice them to play for his team. For me they are different.

NIL is just being allowed to receive cash and goods

These are players on the team, not recruits. It is the very definition of what NIL was intended for lol.

I thought the whole premise of NIL was that athletes could receive compensation in exchange for some tangible product or service, but they couldn't be paid for just being on the team. In this case, what is Lebron receiving for his payment?

It’s legal as is, but if you want to go that route, Lebron is an investor in Beats by Dre, so he could say it’s free endorsement and advertising for the kids to wear his brand he invested in.

But that could be what he is paying for, wearing the brand.

But it cannot have the Trademark Logo, if it does not and does not have Ohio State written on them then its legal, just like some one can use a similar looking tiger paw without the R trademark and can even be an orange shirt you can get away with it unless the school goes after Lebron(which they want) for similar logo trademark then he can continue to do it.

Nothing like what NIL was meant to be. NIL came about because of the video production companies using the name and likeness of college athletes for their video games and then athletes not receiving a dime for it. It was never intended to be what it has become.

Didn't OBJ get gigged for the same basic thing after LSU

won the natty? I know NIL wasn't in place, but NIL is a financial reward for using your name, image or likeness. I don't see how NIL is relevant to this. This looks like just a big gift from a booster. So if OBJ had given out headphones or something other than cash he would've been ok?
Seems like the only rule in college football right now, relative to all of that, is that there are no rules.

Re: Even with NIL How is This Not a Violation

It was a violation before NIL. Fans and boosters were not allowed to gift anything to a player. They couldn't pick up there bill at a restaurant. They couldn't give them a $100 handshake. They couldn't offer them a ride home in a rain storm.
But, with NIL, the NCAA has said that conferences are responsible for governing this sort of thing. I'm sure the B1G is investigating as I type. ????
