How the Pitt game exposed Tony Elliot even more

Oct 23, 2021, 9:23 PM

First off, I am not even sure why I have to even post this with our offense being practically dead last out of 120 FBS teams on offense but here it goes anyway.

1. Playcalling - It is stale and predictable. Today TE had a great play design/call with Ship on a wheel route to the middle of the field which he drops. Outside of that, we have seen nothing new in 7 games.

2. Finding mismatches - Good OCs study film and design/call plays to find mismatches to scheme players open in the passing game. Anyone who has watched 7 games now can count on one finger how many passes we have had to wide-open WRs. Conversely, we continue to see teams get open WRs/ mismatches against Venables who is a better coach and had better players than any defense we have seen this year. If they can do it against us then why can't a 2 million dollar paid OC do it?

3. TE passing plays over 5 yards have been non-existent. Fake punts aside, we have not passed to a TE for over 5 yards this whole season that I can remember.

4. Misdirection - eye-candy, shifts, RB screens, NOTHING to fool the defenses have been installed in this offense. You see it everywhere in college football, especially with schools with lesser talent who are out-matched. This would explain why UC Davis has a better offense than Clemson.

Defend him all you want but having any job is about production. In America, usually, if you don't produce you are fired. At my job, if I don't produce I am fired. Most every single job in America, if you don't produce you are fired.

If you're making 2 million a year and one of the highest-paid coordinators in college football with the absolute worst offensive production in the country, should you not be fired?

Seriously, please riddle me this!

The 15 second possession in the 2nd quarter did it for me. Elliott needs to be fired.

Screw Calford.

I love the guy but his play calling is horrid***

Tony Elliott is going to bury this program

Oct 23, 2021, 9:27 PM

until Dabo does something about it.

And Dabo will do what’s necessary. He’s stubborn as ####, but obviously he knows what he’s doing.

Tony is his buddy and he won’t embarrass him mid season.

Beat UofSC this year, and get back to ‘The Standard’ in 2022.

I agree. Dabo loves all of his coaches, but he has fired Steele, Napier, etc. He's demoted others. I believe he will do what's necessary at season's end.

Honestly I think he will. Should wait till the end of the

you're just an upset fan watching from the outside. One bumpy season and you're ready to start firing people. Fairweather fans all over TNET!

What I am wrong about?

Oct 23, 2021, 9:42 PM

I mean TD my posts and saying I don't know what I am talking about is one thing, but arguing against what I am saying requires a bit more thought.

Care to try it?

Of course not, but how about you get in that kitchen of yours and make me a sammich?

Elliot won't be fired at year end. The list of reasons is long but in a nutshell he was the "play caller" for 2 national championships and his contract runs through 2025. He won with Trevor. He cannot win with DJ. A new QB next year and then you can kick all the excuse crutches out from underneath him.

I mean I really like TE. Just don't know if he's that good.***

This has been talked about for weeks..coaches are not listening.
Can you say Bowden years at Clemson.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

It’s more than just Elliot…

Oct 23, 2021, 9:56 PM

In his two starts last year, with the same crap game plan he looked really good. This year he can’t hit water peeing out of a boat. Same thing with the receivers. How can an entire group of players suddenly forget how to catch, run routes and block. And don’t forget the oline.

I would almost be willing to give Elliot another year if the position coaches were replaced.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Yeah, maybe but misdirection, etc?

Oct 23, 2021, 10:01 PM

doesn't add up man.

someone, please convince me why someone else could not do better with this group than last.

Or is it that our players are also 120th in the country as a group on offense in the country?

Or…did it expose DJ and how the staff has been trying to work around his glaring weaknesses and the “adjustments” have detrimentally affected the rest of the team.

Re: How the Pitt game exposed Tony Elliot even more

Oct 23, 2021, 10:05 PM

Hello PBT,

Of course you (like all of the rest of us) are irritable after giving away another game (we burned 21 points ... Shipley drop / DJ shovel pick-6 / and B.Spector's unspeakably stupid personal foul in late Q2 when Pitt had not converted a 3rd and long ... after which Pitt drove down the field and hit TD pass.

But you're wrong about T.Elliott ... here's why:

Playcalling: T.Elliott's play calls are pretty good, despite the enormously disappointing:

(1) WR Corp. Plays have not been 'exploited' by our mediocre WR Corp. Outside of J.Ross, who is very good and J.Ngata, who is coming along and is now serviceable), you know the problem with WRs. The others are either injured (Brannon Spector / F.Ladson ... and we never see them play) -or- apparent recruiting misses (no names, but you can figure out this part) -or- not ready yet (T.Stellato). The WR's are not great at getting open, but the pass plays are good enough for the WRs to get open often enough.
(2) Sub-par QB play: DJ has terrible luck with the WRs and TEs not named Davis Allen missing plenty of EASY catches. DJ's accuracy is, at best, average for a D-1 QB.

T.Elliott's plays actually WORK, but if the QB misses the throw and the WR's could't catch COVID in a NY State nursing home, then NO PLAY CALLER will be successful. T.Elliott can find the mis-matches that our under-performing WR Corp could otherwise exploit, except that the WRs &/or the QB can't make the play.

(*) No long passes to the TEs: D.Allen is a good TE, but he's anything but elusive / fast. He is simply not a downfield threat. B.Galloway is fast, but a terrible receiver.

(*) Mis-direction / fancy ball handling. DJ's touchdown run was the outcome from a well-coached deceptive play which worked when the Pitt Defense thought our RB had the ball.

Got to think about what you saw today before lashing out and blaming the wrong entity.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Can we agree to disagree?

Oct 23, 2021, 10:14 PM

Stale play calling - I guess you gave me that.

TE passes - so you're saying our TE room is so bad that we can't run a route over 5 yards and catch it?

Misdirection - you go to one RPO where DJ actually keeps it and runs into the endzone as creative play-calling acumen?

We are almost DEAD LAST IN OFFENSE!!!!! And you're saying we have this AMAZING OC but it's some other reason we are this bad?

I mean really?

Re: How the Pitt game exposed Tony Elliot even more

Oct 23, 2021, 10:18 PM

Wrong on all counts. We have 0 playmakers this year. Look at the stats from the Pitt game last year when we scored 7 touchdowns and compare to today. No person that scored a TD last year played today. That is not on the coaches because all those guys are either in the NFL or another team.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Oh brother, Valley boy..... again

Oct 23, 2021, 10:29 PM

yawn, despite your super lazy response I thought I would humor you anyway.

So I am wrong on all counts because there are 0 playmakers?

Does that explain stale play calling, no long passes to the TE, and no misdirection/creativity?

Nothing personal but you need to try harder.

2024 purple level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

PS, are you TE's son? If so very very sorry!!!!!***
