Need some cable cutting expertise . . .

Aug 13, 2017, 5:39 PM

Sorry I know this has been discussed slot. But I have a Sony tv. Went to best buy they said I didn't need a box (roku or Amazon fire) BC I have a smart tv. But when I go to my smart tv to try to use, it says I need a Sony LAN adapter which basically looks like a little zip drive stick. I look on line and what I'm seeing is over one hundred. So do I buy one of those or can I use an Amazon fire box anyways since it's cheaper than buying the LAN adapter? Thoughts? Also I'm trying sling first then PlayStation Vue. Sling looks good for the most part. PlayStation Vue comes with cloud DVR and can stream consistently on more devices from what I understand. I asked cable guy to hard wireme to my main tv but didn't he rsnkyodem off another cable. So I think I'm struck with running over wireless . Really new and dumb to this

Some of the so-called smart TVs aren't so smart when it comes to processor speed, which causes some delays in loading apps and creates buffering issues. Some TVs (example: Samsung) won't work with some apps at all (ESPN's WATCHESPN app is one). I tried using the apps on my Samsung 65", but finally gave up and use Roku units.

I'm no expert, but I have settled in with Roku Premiere+ units (5 of them) - tried the Roku Streaming Sticks, but found them lacking on wi-fi distance reception..... now using all Premiere+ units, which work great. Only one is connected to the ethernet network, the rest are over wi-fi and I see no difference in performance.

I also found that some of the lower priced wireless extenders are no good and have installed a Netgear Nighthawk AC-1900 in extender mode (not access point). I now have really good wireless throughout my house.

Oh - I use this to support my cable cutting experiment and to access DirecTV Now and USTV Now to replace the cable. So far, I'm delighted.

Clemson football. I do not care about using my TV for any other purpose. Is there a non-cable option for me?

Check out Hulu TV

Aug 13, 2017, 6:57 PM

It has a better channel lineup than Sling (unless you get BOTH orange and blue then you don't get ESPN and Regional Sport Networks). And you have access to Hulu's massive TV and movie library. You can also pay $4 more and get unlimited screens. We were going to do that and have basically 6 people using it, but DTV gave us a crazy good offer.

From my research, Vue was pretty good but I couldn't use it on my Xbox so that was a deal breaker.

Smart TVs in my experience are usually awful and aren't kept up to date by their manufacturers.

I am a big fan of the fire tv but Roku is also a good device.

I have...

an Amazon Fire TV box for one tv... works great. My newest display (not TV) has Chromecast... both PS Vue and Sling support from mobile devices (typically just use iPad).

As for the OTT content, I'm thinking about switching to Sling. They now support cloud DVR and have a good line-up combining Orange and Blue. PS Vue still does not allow you to stream outside your home Wi-Fi (except saved shows) and that is a pain when we travel on vacations. $5/mth more, but worth it to us.

Do your homework regularly though because these providers will keep adding/changing features to compete for our eyeballs (i.e. - Disney pulling out of Netflix).

Get the Fire TV - as others have said, its processor is better than your TV's, and you can install anything on it, including Kodi. You might want to check out DirectTV Now, which is supposed to get DVR this fall. If you have AT&T cell phones, you can get DTV Now for just a few dollars, and you get unlimited streaming over the cell network of DTV Now.

If you want to use your Sony or universal remote with the Fire TV, you can a Flirc USB 2.0 (item # B01MS2V7GM on Amazon), and you can attach it to the Fire TV with this item # B003M0NURK. Now you can operate it all with one remote.

Start with a roku or amazon TV

Aug 13, 2017, 11:27 PM

For your service.....try the free trial with sling or vue.

These are good easy places to start. Once you have the first service figured out, you can try the next free trial to figure out what you like best.

Both sling and Vue will allow you to use the watchespn app too.....you just have to sign up with your sling or vue credentials.

I promise it is easier than it sounds.

Thanks this is what I was thinking. I went to best buy and

They told me I didn't need a tv box BC smart tv but Sony requires a LAN adapter which is more expensive than a box and then apparently even though I ran a cord to my more recent Vizio it says you can't add apps. So I'm going to get a box today. Will compare prices but I've heard good things about the Amazon. Then will complete trial of sling and then do vue. Gotta have this figured out before Sep 2nd!
