Georgia opening back up Fri! Pray it goes well down here.

Apr 20, 2020, 5:32 PM

Hair salons, bowling alleys, and gyms first.

Bowling alleys seem dirty.

Sure seems so .....

holes are nasty places sometimes..... and hard to clean.

Gyms?? That one surprises me. Those places are full

Of sweat and therefore germs even if you spray and towel after each bench and bar touched which many won’t bother to do.

Last time I tried to do a pull-up (about a year ago) I pulled a muscle in my back and shoulder. Guess I wasn't warmed up properly but I know one thing....I won't attempt another one ever again.

Re: And they’re the least essential business out there.

Apr 20, 2020, 6:07 PM [ in reply to And they’re the least essential business out there. ]

I have been doing 100 pushups per day....not consecutively, but still happy I got to this stage. 4 set of 25 and whenever I want to do them. 25 before I do laundry. 25 before walking dog. 25 in between sips of a beer. Etc.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Even 100 sets of 1 is still doing something.

Apr 20, 2020, 9:28 PM

I think it was Lawrence Taylor that said he would rotate pushups and situps during commercial breaks when he was home watching tv and got up to doing about 10,000 a day. He must've been a real couch potato to watch that much tv.

"People have had enough." What a ####### ridiculous statement. I'm trying desperately to keep my wife (heart condition and asthma) from getting this thing but Becky the uneducated #### needs to get her roots dyed blonde, so by all ####### means open things back up!

But yes. I'm surrounded by ignorant rednecks here in GA.

My family is suffering economically too. As I said, I hope the idiots are right this time. It will be good for all of us. But Georgia's numbers DOUBLED in a smidge over a week. If Georgia's numbers were actually declining this might be a feasible option.

Re: Fellow Georgian here

Apr 21, 2020, 1:07 PM [ in reply to Fellow Georgian here ]

Wait, so "renecks are ignorant" because you expect them all to lose everything, the economy to hit a point that recovery would be a very long road, and shelter their lives because YOUR wife has health issues?? Did you ever think that maybe it's just you and your family that may need to continue sheltering while the open up starts, while others not in that same unfortunate situation can try to get their livelihoods and jobs back before they end up homeless?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Ever stop to think I'm affected economically as well?

Apr 21, 2020, 1:46 PM

I'll be happy when our economy recovers from this. In the meantime, defying recommendations from health professionals while our numbers increase exponentially is pretty ####### ignorant.

Maybe if republicans passed legislation that actually helped people and not corporations (that have been buying back BILLIONS in stock over the past 1.5 years) then we wouldn't be in the position to have to rush the reopening...

Re: Ever stop to think I'm affected economically as well?

Apr 21, 2020, 2:49 PM

Did you know that Evil Corporations are composed of good people? And owned by moms and pops and teachers and farmers and soldiers and nurses, etc? Most people couldn't ever afford to retire without owning shares of those evil corporations.

The bailout package has focused on the 45,000,000 small businesses that provide millions of jobs and perform innumerable services in our supply chain. If the small businesses stop working, the essential goods and services you need to survive would dry up.

Most evil Corporations are still shut down, except those that supply essential products like food, soap and paper goods.

Oh, and your internet providers, and the media conglomerates that misinform you. Unfortunately, those big corporations are still working.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Most factories and industrial businesses are operating

Apr 21, 2020, 8:11 PM

The critical industrial infrastructure may have slowed, but it hasn't stopped. Some companies rearranged shifts, but the locations that actually closed had infection problems on site or a severe drop in demand. I'm dealing right now with companies in CA, MA, TX, and NY for a variety of non-catalog hardware and services. Some of the engineers are working from home, but none have said the virus will delay delivery significantly.

It is mostly the small non-essential businesses that are closed. A lot of people who make our life easier and nicer. I might keep cutting my own hair when things get back to normal, though.

Re: Ever stop to think I'm affected economically as well?

Apr 21, 2020, 3:19 PM [ in reply to Ever stop to think I'm affected economically as well? ]

Wait, you do realize these so called "experts" aren't experts in this, right? This is new to everyone. These "experts" are taking guesses like everyone else...some of them so absurd, they are saying it may be another 12 -18 months before things are "normal"...do you really expect the economy can stay like this that long...on hunches??

It's pretty simple...if you or someone close to you has auto-immune issues, you might want to chose to hunker down longer and see how things go. How would you feel if everything opens up, you sit in fear like they want you to (likely more political based reasoning than they are letting be known), and everything goes fine and reduces? What IF there isn't a conspiracy theoried 2nd wave? Hope you enjoyed being a hermit because media controlled the fear.

Apr 20, 2020, 7:00 PM

the restaurants and bars at half capacity for a week or two and see how it goes. They have been hit the hardest. I would hold off on the gyms completely. Salons would be by appt only , staggered by ten minutes between clients so everyone can clean up. no one in the waiting rooms. I hope it works out for Georgia. They got hit kinda hard from my observations.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

That's phase 2

Apr 20, 2020, 7:34 PM

Gyms are specific for phase 1, with distance and sanitation. But bars and restaurants are supposed to open with reduced capacity for phase 2. The clown in Georgia decided that tattoo parlors and piercing businesses were fine to open before less risky businesses.

Some of the bars/restaurants I frequent are doing very well with takeout, while others are closed. Breweries are selling a lot of growlers/crowlers to go. It's really a mixed bag.

Apr 21, 2020, 8:52 PM [ in reply to Re: Not disputing your assessment of Kemp, ]

Any drive for new technology is usually good for everybody - better jobs, etc. Those recent years of "clean coal" and the overlapping fuel cell research was good for a lot of people. I didn't see anything positive come out of sequestration research, but something must have. The problem here is that green is tied to global warming, which is heresy to religious nuts for some bizarre reasons beyond Koch brainwashing.

Renewable is sometimes bad: we should be making fuel ethanol from petroleum feedstocks instead of making it from corn; it's a huge waste of money and resources to support a few farmers in Iowa.

Re: Bad plan.

Apr 20, 2020, 11:36 PM [ in reply to Bad plan. ]

My governor, too.

Opening gyms, nail salons, hair salons, massage therapists first...is he TRYING to establish herd immunity in less than a month?

Maybe he has been advised that direct contact between persons is ok if we all wear masks and don't chew gum or blow bubbles....

Maybe giving them a moment in the spotlight?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Just to be clear

Apr 21, 2020, 12:09 AM

Herd immunity just means the virus spreads slower because it doesn’t reach as many susceptible people. So you become less likely to be exposed. If you do get exposed and aren’t immune, it does nothing.

Assume you know that, but I see a lot of people who don’t seem to.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Just to be clear

Apr 21, 2020, 8:10 AM

Hyperbolizing.

In order to establish herd immunity, you have to get 60-80% infected. Right now the highest infected projections are no more than 5%.

Somehow we have to get from here to there without killing thousands more or shuttering our economy repeatedly.

Because he is favoring businesses that involve lots of close contact or germy surfaces, it seems his decision may be counter-intuitive. If any clients or techs are asymptomatic positives, they could affect more people more quickly than many other professions.

I'm sure he has been advised that these businesses, since they follow sanitary protocols prescribed by their state regulators, can practice safely.

Just emphasizing the counterintuitive nature of the decision, that's all.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

The antibody surveys in NY suggest

Apr 23, 2020, 6:10 PM

morbidity of 0.7% using NYC (20%) and 0.8% using the whole state (13.4%).
That doesn't sound so bad, but if we need 60-80% of the country to get it for the spread to stop, that's potentially 1.3 to 2.1 million dead, if you assume they can all get the same medical care as now.

True, hospitals will gladly take C19 or any other patients right now. Another month of the way things are going and half of the hospital staffs will be laid off. People watch the news and think hospitals are over run. Couldn't be further from the truth.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: hospitals are like every other business

Apr 21, 2020, 1:09 PM

Morale really low at some hospitals.

Two nurses, different hospitals, saying that with all the lucrative procedures suspended, most employees are having their hours cut.

But not the administrators. They visit in each others' offices--a few feet apart--with their feet up on the desk, drinking coffee, drawing full salary. They don't even bother to restock the supplies for the nurses with Covid-19 patients.

Many nurses saying being left alone on the front lines isn't what they signed up for.

One of my wife's nurse friends caught Covid-19 from a patient, recovered and went back to work, relapsed and has now fully recovered again but admits she isn't as committed as she was before.

If this ends up being just the first wave, we need to learn how to prepare our work force for the next one. Just like the military always analyzes the after-action report, and sports teams watch tape, we need to do a better job anticipating the problems a pandemic brings.

This will not be the last pandemic we see.

(Knock on wood.)
