Best tailgating generator?

Sep 10, 2019, 10:28 AM

Looking to get a generator to run our TV for tailgating- any thoughts on which kind is best/easiest for a reasonable price?

Also- wifi hotspot or satelite?

Generac. I have a GP2200i and it is great. It is quiet, runs forever, and cheaper than a Honda.

Honda or Yamaha are the best

Sep 10, 2019, 10:45 AM

And you pay for them. . Hondas are more common. The 2200 is about $1000. Honda also makes a 1000 wat for about $800.

I luckily had a 20% coupon for northern tool and got my Honda 2200 for $800.

Yahmaha 2000 is about $900 but they are hard to find at stores. You'll have to order.

Box stores sell other brands for up to 1/4 the price if you want to take a chance on quality. There are plenty of folks here who do. Most are quite now adays (50-60 db) so noise isn't much of a factor anymore. You'll be looking at around $500 for 2000wats. Many have good results. The only thing they lack is the history. Honda has been proven to be a high quality , highly reliable generator...but again.. you pay for it.

I have a honda 2200 and last weekend I ran a 43 inch led tv, direct tv box, small refrigerator cooler, crock pot, and various cell phone charges from 8 am to about 9pm on a little over 1 gallon of gas using eco mode.

IF you only plant to watch a tv ... you can look into DC power....aka batteries.

You're wifi/hot spot will suck. Dish or direct tv is your best choice for tv.

Direct tv
Does NOT MAKE a portable dish for HD programming. You will have to buy a slimline dish with swm. The same ones you see mounted on houses, you can get a complete portable setup off amazon for around $125.

The cheapest self directing HD dish is $1600. So if you want to watch high definition programming you will have to pay for it or tote a giant dish and find the signal yourself.

There are a couple of portable, self finding SD dishes on the market for direct tv. the winegard carryout g2 and king quest 4500?.. they run about $400. Plug em in, push a button, they will find the satellite for you...again only SD.

Dish
Is all HD.. the Playmaker dish is self directing and runs for about $250. It only picks up the east arc. Winegard's pathway x2 dish will locate east and west arcs but it is twice as big as the tailgater and about $400. I've seen both all over campus so they must work well.

ME
I use a winegard carryout gm-mp1 that can be used for dish(hd) OR direct tv(sd). It is small, portable, versatile, and cheap ($160) but It is not self directing. I use a phone app to locate the satelite... but I've done it so much I can find direct tv satellite in under 5 mins.

I own the generator and dish. My neighbor who tailgates with me brings his direct tv box.
I'm also on the lookout for a slimline dish. They randomly show up on the side of the street in my neighborhood on trash day.

I'm also always on the lookout for self finding dish but won't pay more than $200.

I use a Ryobi 2300. Quiet and easy start. Lots of features. Price is much less than Honda and Yamaha and others. Also Bluetooth enabled. We run crock pots, fans and other equipment on the one generator too. No issues. Third year I have used it. I use Directv and a King auto dish. It’s not HD but seems to serve us well. I’ve not heard complaints from the dozens that end up standing around watching the games.

You should strongly consider a champion generator (yellow color) . I walked by a few at the game last weekend and they were very quiet. I imagine they are much more affordable than honda or yamaha.

I've heard a few people suggest not to do this - but both games this year, we've streamed our cell phone hotspot to a Roku. Has worked just fine - no buffering at all and great clarity.

After 15 years of fighting with my FIL every single weekend about calculating angular trajectories of far away galaxies and universes on his archaic old dish, we're never going back to that.

Northern Tool is a really good knock off for about half the price. I use both at work and I've never had a single issue with either. Hondas run about 10% longer on same amount of fuel. Noise levels are really similar. Size and weight is nearly identical.

I tried a hotspot at the game but didn’t get a strong enough signal! I have Directv so I purchased a satellite globe from King Satellite made specifically for Direct TV! You can order another receiver box to take to games or use your main box from home! Directv makes a small Swim satellite also that is cheaper but you have to aim it yourself!
Dish Tv has much better options on Satellites! It might be worth setting up an account with them and only paying for football months! For a spare box with Directv it is 7$ a month!
