Do these students understand finite element models,

Re: Gender bias in professor evaluations at Clemson

did not read the article but the summary is jibberish... they are saying that if there are more men in a department the men get a better evel and if more women are in the department the women get a better eval?

If Clemson is producing students that cannot do a simple evaluation based on content vs gender there are bigger issues than NIL or the portal...

These are all natural biases.....

I have been screaming this...students are not the best evaluators of teachers. They certainly should have a voice, but they aren't adults.

There are all kinds of biases, and they are still children whose brains have not even developed fully.

It's not that hard to figure out!!

Gender bias? Or were they just hawt?

Whatever choice(s) you make makes you. Choose wisely.

This study is not nearly researched enough

Jan 27, 2023, 10:22 PM

Are the researchers sure of the gender of these profs? What did they identify as on the day of study? What was the average grade of the student vs the rated professor? Did the student even have a class under all the professors under study so a comparison could be given 'fairly'. Based on the summation paragraph... looks like a ploy to go to quotas.

Re: This study is not nearly researched enough

They did a follow-up study in which students read descriptions of professors and rated them. They saw the same pattern there. Minority genders were rated more harshly. Had nothing to do with what grade they might be getting.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

LOL totally bogus study followup

Jan 27, 2023, 11:35 PM

Out going surveys of students that actually attend the profs classes would be way more legit. just reading a description and then rating? that is absolutely laughable.

Re: LOL totally bogus study followup

Jan 27, 2023, 11:56 PM

There weren't many details on how they did the follow up but I can imagine a study that would be very sound. You randomize which descriptions or student evaluations show up with male vs female professors. Some participants see one description or evaluation for a man and others see it for a woman. If there is a statistically significant tendency for students to rate the minority gender lower then that's a solid finding. There's nothing at all wrong with that research.

Now it is possible they just used actual data on real professors without varying anything and to me that's less robust but still an interesting finding.

In my world, students who make A's rate professors higher than students who make D's.

Re: Gender bias in professor evaluations at Clemson

Jan 27, 2023, 11:25 PM

How in the world does any student make an evaluation of a professor they have never had any interaction with? That is called a zero credibility study. It is WORTHLESS AND MEANINGLESS. Why is it worth publishing? It isn’t. The evaluation isn’t the problem. The concept of assigning credibility to a WORTHLESS opinion is the problem.

do not consider a person an "adult" until 30 to 35. Putting the insights and context of a wiser mind in a body that young could end so much idiocracy.

Seems like they only considered two genders. I thought there were 57 genders now. I've lost count.

The numbers make me wonder. 100,000 student evaluations from Clemson. Did every one of the 25,000 students do 4 evaluations? Was this done over several years? Just seems like a lot of evaluations from a school with an enrollment of about 25,000.
