"Self fulfilling prophecies." My wife just mentioned

May 11, 2022, 8:49 AM

something this morning in passing, and it suddenly struck me, "That is going to be a self fulfilling prophesy!"

I will give you an older example, from one of my two favorite sitcoms of all time, "Taxi". (The other one is "Cheers".)

Tony Danza, who played the "lovable but brainless lunk" made this comment about the apples in the vending machine being stale. He said something to the effect of: "You know, we will never be able to get anything but stale apples out of this machine." When asked why he thought that, he replied, with great logic, "Well, the machine is full of stale apples now. If we leave them there, they will just get MORE stale. And if we start buying them, they will think we LIKE stale apples, and just put MORE stale apples in the machine!" THAT would be a self fulfilling prophesy.

Now, there have been some in real life whose results made me sad. The Lord knows EYE will never win any awards for being a father, but I DID try to not follow my younger brother's example. I got married at the age of 30, and didn't have the 1st of my two sons until the age of 36. Second one at 42.

Younger bro had gotten married and already had his two daughters well before then. From the time his first daughter was born, she was the Princess of the Manor, and could do no wrong. That's all well and good, and she turned out GREAT considering that she was spoiled silly. But, her younger sister, from the time SHE was born, could apparently do no RIGHT. It was frankly appalling how much her parents played favorites, and anyone from a mile away could see that the favorite wasn't her. She was literally TOLD this. I really am not exaggerating here. So, in that environment, it came as no real great surprise when she began to "act out", and got herself into some pretty serious troubles, even legal ones. Ultimately, she got disowned before the age of 17, and I don't even know where she is now. She was constantly told she could do no right, and she began to live it. THAT is a cruel, cruel example of a real life self fulfilling prophesy.

Now, from that dark tale, on to what my wife said that made the light bulb come on this morning. She said that she was going to start ordering more foodstuffs online, (We are Amazon Junkies) because more and more, when she goes to the grocery stores around here, they are OUT of items we want. So, I had the Tony Danza moment. "It's going to be a self fulfilling prophesy! The more people begin to grocery shop online, the less items the "live" stores are going to stock, because they will be playing a guessing game for awhile on what the new customer buying patterns are going to be, and they don't want to be left holding the bag for items that go out of date! So, more and more "local" shelves will get empty, as the demographic moves to online grocery buying!"

Now, whether that is really true, or if it WAS a Tony Danza moment, only time will tell. Any of you'se got any "Self Fulfilling Prophesies" to relate? And please don't say "The baseball team". I don't want us here on TNet to get credit for that one!

On line service providers are also having big trouble finding the goods that people want.

They are not a solution to the growing disparity between demand and supply.

I approach every endeavor with an expectation of peak performance. I am seldom disappointed.

"peak performance" is subjective and did I mention I have low expectations.

Git to the grocery store early, before all the old people buy everything up. That's been my trick last couple years.

I'm no spring chicken so I blend into the crowd anyway. ??

It's hard to beat "WalMartians" to the store. Those people

keep some truly scrange hours! (And wear some truly weird clothes, too. I don't want to post any pictures or video here in the late breakfast hour, we don't need no one "losing their lunch!")

I've seen 3:00 AM Walmart shoppers and we certainly don't need pigs of THAT! Rest of the day isn't a big improvement.
